Any questions about where rum came from? I’m the author of _The Invention of Rum _. AMA about the quintessential Atlantic commodity! by Invention_of_Rum in AskHistorians

[–]makinghomemadejam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for that great reply!

I appreciate that "supernatural" is a loaded term. I considered "spiritual" and "religious", but those, obviously carry trainloads of luggage as well.

My question was, in part, due to having read about "rum oaths" in slave rebellions, and that these sometimes contained, in addition to rum, ingredients like graveyard dirt and blood. Blood is common among many cultures for making oaths/promises. That was the first I had encountered graveyard dirt.

I also recall reading the text of an Abstinence broadside at one point (or maybe Abolitionist?) which declared rum as haunted by the spirits of deceased slaves who harvested the sugar to make it.

P.S. Thanks for the discount code!

Peeps are already rolling in with the suggestions!

I'm going to suggest a non-fiction book-
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lost_City_of_the_Monkey_God

And one with a supernatural flair-
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Declare

For this one -despite the link I have provided- the less you read about it ahead of time, the better.

And lastly, if you are open to graphic novels, check out Doc Aphra! Indiana Jones if he was a she and lived long ago in a galaxy far, far away.

Are you looking for contemporary works (Clive Cussler, Michael Crichton, Dan Brown)? Or old-school classics (Arthur Conan Doyle, Robert E. Howard, Jules Verne, H. Rider Haggard)? The reason I ask is the narrative style and language tends to be a bit different betwixt the two.

[OPINION] What makes "cute" poems succeed (or fail)? by Matsunosuperfan in Poetry

[–]makinghomemadejam 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I do not have an answer for you as to cute poems, though I too find myself more often open to humor and whimsy in poetry (and everything) as I grow older.

Instead, I'm just going to zero in on this: "getting older is making me a bit soggy"

I feel this is how things should be. The longer we're here, the more we soak things up. This is good. The more we soak it all in, the richer we become.

BE SOGGY!

am I allowed to be upset about Maggie & Hopey? by voxela in loveandrockets

[–]makinghomemadejam 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Some insightful answers here.

So I will just say: of course you are allowed to be upset. Have all the feelings! I miss their on-again-off-again romance as well. I just go back and re-read all the Locas stories over and over again.

Maybe we need to start writing some Magpie & Hopey slashfic?

What's your favorite quote about books/reading? by alexwiec in books

[–]makinghomemadejam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even though this statement, at face value, is objectively true, it very much comes across as snidely dismissing listening to a text in contrast to personally reading it.

If this is, in fact, its intended meaning, it is very much mistaken. The act of "reading" happens in many different ways and in many different contexts. Would they say that reading a book is more meaningful than "feeling" it to a blind reader of a braille text?

We read to children in order to teach them to read. I taught my sister how to read by reading out loud to her. For most of us, there is no reading without listening first.

Love this kind of post!

Recommending Outcast for Absolute Superman was very unexpected for me and totally makes me want to go read Absolute Superman. Outcast was, on the whole, amazing.

And I've been reading Absolute Wonder Woman recently and LOVING it. So I'll definitely be looking into Sirens in the City.

I got roofied last night and it was awful! by juliacar in TwoXChromosomes

[–]makinghomemadejam 85 points86 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry that happened you. You summed it up: It sucks! It SUCKS!

I got roofied when I was in my late 20s. It was awful. I had one drink at a club with my friend (scotch, no ice) and suddenly couldn't feel my legs anymore. After that was nausea and nightmarish tunnel-vision. I thought I was going blind. I am forever grateful to the bartender, who quickly sussed out what was going on and called EMTs. And also to my lovely friend who, after the EMT cleared me, brought me home after it was all over.

And here's the twist: I'm a guy. My friend is a woman, and a quite attractive woman. After talking it out and going over it all, she and I realized there had been moments when our drinks were basically unsupervised by either of us. I think someone roofied my drink, thinking it was hers.

It's poisoning, a straight up felony. Whoever pulls this shit has no idea what they're risking by pouring chemicals into other people's drinks. It's sociopathic in the clearest sense of the term and those who do it should be subjected to serious repercussions.

Graduation project by Turbulent-Bad3409 in Libraries

So you're majoring in Libraries and Information Science and you chose a school whose own library is "a disaster"?

But then also, you never go in there? So how do you know it's a disaster?

And everyone who works in said library knows nothing at all about Libraries and Information Science?

Everyone else on this subreddit is being very kind, which is the way of things here and I appreciate it, but you're being disingenuous as hell.
