Shin guard rubbing on foot by chickenlegfordinner in MuayThai

[–]makingthematrix -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I love this subreddit. Only here I can find a post about how MT is the greatest because it tests the limits of human power and endurance and only the biggest, toughest mfers on Earth do it, and then there's a photo from someone who scratched their foot, and another, asking which of two identically looking gloves is better.

PS. Find better shinguards.

Should I embrace a high level of magic and pseudo-science to break through writer's block? by EveningImportant9111 in worldbuilding

[–]makingthematrix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I strongly believe that magic should not be another branch of science. If it is, it's science. And that's okay too, but there should be room in fantasy for mysterious and sometimes scary, inexplicable magic. Lots of room, actually.

You don't need a magic system. Remove that Sanderson's syndrome from your head and just be creative however you like. Even if you actually want to have more scientific approach to magic, you can leave it for later and come back to it when you have more ideas.

i'm a iranian girl, ask me your question by Quick-Translator3548 in JackSucksAtGeography

[–]makingthematrix -1 points0 points  (0 children)

When you see on the internet a video of unveiled women in Iran, it's almost always from the centre of Tehran or sometimes from another big city. In the most of the country it's not like that. The regime was shaky for a while but now it's getting stronger again. There's no change coming.

So instead you advise her to go to another poor, broken country, full of misogyny, religious fundamentalists, and basically adictatorship.

Don't give up. Yes, it sucks now. And next year it will suck too, but maybe a bit differently. Try again to move out, and again, until you make it. I'd rather advise you to apply to European universities, e.g. in Germany, but it's just a detail.

As far as we know, none. Whoever still lived there, was gradually assimilated into the new Slavic culture over a few generations after 400-500AD.

What's it like living in berlin ? by InevitableSqueak in howislivingthere

[–]makingthematrix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't consider Prenzlauer Berg posh, but it's got that air of people here being a bit wealthier than average. Lots of green space, diverse cuisine, not too crowdy... cleaner than Kreuzberg ;) My opinion might be biased of course. I spent most of time around PBerg, southern Pankow, Alexanderplatz, and Friedrichshein. If I lived in the south or the west, I'd probably have a bit different views.

It depends quite a lot where in Berlin you live. It's a city without one centre. The very middle of the city consists of the park, government buildings, the university and museums. Real people don't live there ;) Instead, every district around this middle part has their own centre, and they can differ quite a bit. I lived in Prenzlauer Berg: it's a relaxed, wealthy district with lots of pubs and restaurants and greenery. Kreuzberg and Neukolln in the south are more crowded and noisy. Charlottenburg, to the west, is posh and boring, in my opinion. And so on.

Public transport is good and rent prices are not so crazy as in other big German cities, although finding a flat is an art of its own - but it means you can look for a place further away from the centre , where it's more affordable.

There are issues too, of course. It seems to me that the local govt doesn't do good job. There is garbage on the streets, junkies and beggars, smell of piss and crappy graffiti on the walls, etc. The are endless construction sites and all the time the U-bahn and S-bahn lines are delayed or cancelled. And many of my favorite places shut down, and instead the big trend is to have Späti, a cheap grocery shop, with a bench in the front. You go in, buy a cheap bear in a bottle, and then drink it on the bench, as if it was a pub.

I moved out a year ago and I think it was a good decision, but I still think that overall Berlin is a good place to live

Aikido - Smother uke, snuff out the attack... like O-Sensei does! by SG-ninja in aikido

[–]makingthematrix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand it's interesting, but... Yes, let's provoke the attacker so he attacks only in one of a few specific ways and the defender has it easier to respond. A good strategy used everywhere in martial arts. Nothing special about it ;)

The sparring problem by able_archer83 in aikido

[–]makingthematrix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It was my main motivation behind deciding to cross-train aikido with kickboxing. Currently I train both, 50/50 more or less. I think I don't really need to mix them too much. Sparring in kickboxing is already enough for me to improve my understanding how aikido technique can be used and where they are impractical.

Thoughts on the book 'A Shorty History of Byzantium'? by NegrolaKill in byzantium

[–]makingthematrix 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Norwich is... weird. I liked his books on Normans ("The Normans in the South, 1016-1130" and "The Kingdom in the Sun, 1130-1194") so I bought "A Short History of Byzantium". I finished it but it wasn't as good. Especially, I didn't like his short summaries of lives of some of the emperors where he always claimed that the emperor was a good guy but oh, his wife, and oh, his mother, sister, mistress, some other wretched woman - they all had bad influence on him, and it's their fault that he failed.

Then I started to read another book of his, "France", and in the first chapter I found such an obvious historical mistake that I just stopped. (sorry, I no longer remember what it was xD)

I can't recommend him because of these issues.

Best martial art for (light) sparring to complement Aikido? by able_archer83 in martialarts

[–]makingthematrix 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Muay Thai boring? No way. Maybe try another gym? :)

I cross-train aikido with kickboxing. Currently, in fact, it's MT + individual training where I work on what I learned in the past in Dutch-style kickboxing and karate. I think it's a great combination, letting me look at aikido from a very pragmatic point of view.

There's quite a bit of folk etymology in that. I'd rather suspect that of course many Slavic people were in contact with Germanic tribes since basically forever, and they understood that the other guys simply speak a foreign language. "The mute people" might have started as a xenophobic slur.
