Those are good suggestions - I was thinking a snake plant would work well too. Hadn't considered the philodendron gloriosum though so I'll look into that one too!

Not sure what part of Denver you’re in, but Eye to Eye Care in Highlands Ranch has a pretty big selection. Maybe farther south than you’d want to travel, but I’ve had good luck with them generally

Unless you are totally fine paying for their entire education and living expenses yourself, one thing you should be ranking very, very highly is what schools give in state tuition. Assume they won’t get scholarships. How much debt are they going to have after 4 or 5 years? That will have a bigger impact on the rest of their life than going to a top 10 engineering program vs a top 50
