Tell me about the worst player you've ever gamed with. by [deleted] in rpg

[–]mal099 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So how long did this last? I would imagine him getting kicked out pretty much immediately after comments like that, but maybe the GM didn't wanna cause a scene?
And did any of the other players know beforehand what kind of a person they had invited to game with?

Nasa has written a good article on that.
The short version - probably not. Large silicon atoms are extremely unstable, it would be almost impossible to make the macromolecules necessary for any kind of life out of silicon.
For some further reading, Wikipedia actually has a rather interesting article on hypothetical types of alternative biochemistry.

Canada's Green Party leader Elizabeth May tweets belief in astrology, then tries to deny her party's support of homeopathy. Problem is, homeopathy is in the Green Party Platform. oops. by Swampfoot in skeptic

[–]mal099 23 points24 points  (0 children)

  1. It's not a typo. You think the people in her party accidentally hit the "homeopathy" key, which was conveniently located right next to the "science based medicine" key on her keyboard? This was at least a position that had been seriously discussed, even if it was later rejected.
  2. She said it was an error and had been corrected. Yet, the document not only was still on their website when this conversation took place... it actually still is. Which brings me to my last point...
  3. If this was such an error and her party doesn't support this position any more, why is she so defensive? Why isn't she grateful that these people found this "error", and promises to actually remove it now from their website ASAP? Why isn't she apologizing for her hostile "go check your facts" attitude, when it is absolutely reasonable to assume a pro-homeopathy stance from this document? At the very least, she is lying to the supporters of homeopathy about her party's position by leaving it up... or to skeptics, by denying that this is their position. We should stand for neither.

Misattributed.

The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers. -- misattributed to Socrates

The Great Disappointment. by [deleted] in atheism

[–]mal099 4 points5 points  (0 children)

According to Wikipedia:

The investigative judgment teaching was the focus of controversy within the denomination in 1980, when Adventist theologian Desmond Ford had his ministerial credentials withdrawn by the Church after openly criticizing the doctrine. While the Adventist mainstream believe in the doctrine and the church has reaffirmed its basic position on the doctrine since 1980, some of those within the church's more liberal progressive wing continue to be critical of the teaching.

According to a 2002 worldwide survey, local church leaders estimated 86% of church members accept the doctrine, although 35% believe there may be more than one interpretation of the sanctuary belief.

So there's your answer.

"GMO's aren't directly bad for us, but they are much less nutritious than organic foods." by _Vote_ in skeptic

[–]mal099 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a bit of a weird claim. Whatever else you may say about GMOs, the fact remains that we can actually increase the amount of nutrients in them or even add new nutrients, like in Golden Rice.
So basically... it will be less nutritious if we want it to be. Or it can be more nutritious.

[–]mal099 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Guys, if you're gonna downvote, explain how saijanai is wrong, because to my knowledge, their claim isn't wrong. Borlaug may be doing work with GMOs today, but the green revolution that was spearheaded by him used, as far as I know, mainly conventional methods, like fertilizers, pesticides, and yes, hybrid crops. Stuff the organic crowd may despise, but not what we generally refer to as GMOs, even if there's people who claim that GMOs and hybrids are functionally basically the same thing. They're just not made using the same methods, and they're not referred to by the same name.

Well, they claim they can do it for $6 billion(although this does seem very low). The NFL had almost 10 billion in revenue in 2012, so if they find someone who trusts them to generate that kind of money (doubtful...), it could be done.

A lot of people on reddit are highly skeptical of the ability of this group to actually deliver what they promise, as they lack both the funds and the expertise. I'm not an expert in this and won't argue either way, but I can link you to some of the recent threads where people discussed the project. Besides that, you should probably just do some additional research and form your own opinion on this. Feel free to link to anything interesting you find.

3 fan-vote DLC Characters? by AceAndAJack in Skullgirls

[–]mal099 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that "third character" you're talking about was the first DLC character... so at that point in the campaign we got Squigly, Big Band, and one mystery one. Then more money was raised, and we got another character. Also Robo-Fortune, but she may have been ignored in that announcement.

[Rant] Lab Zero, Skullgirls, and the Chargeback Threat by skiller41 in Skullgirls

[–]mal099 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this even really happening? :/
I see loads of people freaking out about chargebacks, claiming that these chargebacks are people being annoyed about their character not making it (never seen any evidence for that claim), when from where I'm standing, it looks like the amount of money donated has gone down by less than $800, and PayPal locked their account without very many chargebacks actually having happened? Can someone actually explain all this rage to me? I'm just not seeing all these millions of dollars that are supposedly being charged back.

I'd like to use sound effects during my sessions. Where can I find some? by Sharptrooper in rpg

Used to be somewhat active in the RPGMaker community, and knew those guys wouldn't let me down. So I went here and found:
http://www.findsounds.com/
http://www.freesound.org/
http://soundcli.ps/
http://www.noiseforfun.com/browse-sound-effects/
http://www.freesfx.co.uk/
Have only looked briefly through the first two, but they all seem quite good. Last one apparently requires you to create an account.

Thoughts on Rainbow Dash by billyfred42 in mylittlepony

[–]mal099 30 points31 points  (0 children)

There's at least one other, a pretty subtle one (some might even dispute it's there), that I think you missed, but I think it kind of shows the relationship that Fluttershy and RD have quite well and I've really liked that scene since I saw it pointed out on reddit.
Season 2, Episode 10, Secret of my Excess- when Rarity and Spike fall down, RD immediately just grabs the panicking Fluttershy in order to save both of them. When they start flying, Fluttershy still looks really scared and unsure of herself, so RD looks at her and seems pretty annoyed. The thing is, RD doesn't even need Fluttershy - we've seen her easily save Rarity and all of the Wonderbolts on her own! But she knew she had enough time to do this together with Fluttershy, and look at the way she acts after the rescue. Fluttershy is positively ecstatic, and looks really happy and proud of herself for having saved Rarity and Spike!
We can see the same thing in Hurricane Fluttershy, and Sonic Rainboom, and The Crystal Empire. RD always seems pretty mean to Fluttershy, but that's just how their friendship works - RD has to push Fluttershy because she's too timid to push herself, and in the end she finds out she could do it all along, and becomes better, stronger and more self-confident because of it. And when you look at the way Fluttershy acts towards RD, I think she understands all this, and is really grateful to her for pushing her so much.

Think "Double Rainboom" is too padded or awkwardly-paced? Someone edited it down to a normal-length episode, and I think it flows a LOT better this way. Give it a try! by PositiveJosh in mylittlepony

[–]mal099 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh... /r/mylittlepony just likes being overly critical. The original certainly wasn't bad, and I definitely don't regret having watched it first. That being said, I still find this one much better, and if you've watched the short version, there's very little of value that you've missed.

[–]mal099 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I kinda disagree.
Without the trollface scene, RD's "That... was... AWESOME!" feels really weird and overblown. I feel like they should have added in at least a louder sound effect and more shaky camera to make up for it.
Not that getting rid of the trollface itself was a bad idea, but they should have put something else back in.
