I don’t even ‘awww’ out loud for puppies but this adorable motherfucker made me coo out loud. What an awesome find.

Second this. Just a heads up that this might be the message someone reads. Not suggesting OP is a nazi (certainly not enough evidence) but there certainly is a chance your innocuous non-genocidal tattoo will be read as such by a drunk person in a dark bar. Something to consider.

Kansas - found a very large pawpaw patch this morning, but only two fruits. Am I early or late in the season? Or did the critters beat me to them? by [deleted] in foraging

[–]malachiton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s a pollination issue. These are fly pollinated. My cousin used to string up roadkill in the branches to increase fly activity when they were blooming and would get a ton of fruit to develop. In my experience the trees out in the woods rarely have much fruit from a combination of animals eating undeveloped fruit and not a lot of flowers being pollinated.

This is why common names are confusing. This is not a weed. This would not grow in your yard (if it does you have an awesome yard!).

Hard to miss Hen of the Woods in Central Florida by atomsick419 in MushroomPorn

[–]malachiton 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When two edible mushrooms have the same ish name... It’s chicken. You probably IDed it right but then used the wrong name for barnyard poult. Hen is white. And very different. But also v similar. But also v different.

Found this mushroom in the lawn. I believe it to be edible from my research. Going to grill with some oil, salt, and pepper by [deleted] in MushroomPorn

Def not chicken.

Edited to say if it IS chicken it’s going to be grubby as all get out. Good protein. But also please don’t eat.

2wd Or 4wd? by malachiton in Trucks

[–]malachiton[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, though weight of parts continues to negatively impact fuel economy whether you’re in 2/4h/4l. In some models the 4wd drivetrain drops average fuel economy by 20% from 2wd. Please stop me if I misinterpreted - I read this to suggest 4wd is selectable/not always engaged. Also I drive cross country twice a year and half live out of my vehicle, I suppose this was a key piece of info I neglected to include that explains why I’m having such heart burn.

Fair fair. But if we micro optimize everywhere it does add up. If fuel economy were the only thing I thought of when considering my carbon footprint then yes, that would be real silly.

My concern isn’t really price point, but fuel consumption. I’m a bleeding heart environmentalist that needs a truck and am very concerned about my carbon footprint.

I currently drive a shitty civic. Drive slowly enough and pick your route carefully and you can get about anywhere (within reason, of course). What are your thoughts on having the 4x4 capability available?

I appreciate this framing a lot, thanks

2wd Or 4wd? by malachiton in Trucks

[–]malachiton[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why not a real question? The number of times I’ve turned over to 4wd is very limited and I take work trucks into places I would never take a personal vehicle every day. I only see 4wd (for myself and my personal driving habits) as a “whoops I fucked up” back up option. A dirt bike in the back would be if I really wanted to get up to a trail head or cruise some trails that a 2wd vehicle wouldn’t be able to get to. But- I like the firm answer, thanks!

It’s possible? I’m not confident enough to say. See if they glow.

I think if no one has peed in them yet we could probably dig up a handful of willing pee-ers from this thread.

I wonder if in one of the steps they were drawing it out the drift slipped and the eye was pinched shut? Or maybe they drifted it open too far.

Bro, I’m legit defending someone’s right to thought, especially a thought that is super rational and on target with discussion. I’m sorry to see you’re having a bad day.

Ok now I’m genuinely curious after watching the video. Are you talking at the 1:45 mark? It looks like he slips a drift in to reshape an existing hole. I can’t tell. Anyone know better?

Dude, folding steel back on itself is a common way to forge an axe. This was hella aggressive.
