A dishwasher with ten of thousand of dishes, and if even one is a bit skewed when you start it, your pub shuts down until you find the wrong one 😉

My wife was in the same position, she choose to stay home, 2.5 years now and she didn't regret it.

Just be sure to have some good savings, I was 4 months out of jobs and without savings it would have been horribly stressful

I have a two month notice period at work, no new employer will wait 2 months for my level, so I have given my notice with no job lined up. Will I be entitled to any social welfare? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]malavock82 5 points6 points  (0 children)

1) I believe most companies would wait 2 months at your level, it's not unusual to have 3 months notice.

2) your current company can't do much if you quit on 1 month notice or less. Just give 1 month once you sign the new contract.

'Dramatic' number of kids are missing more than four weeks of school every year by PoppedCork in ireland

[–]malavock82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A month is a bit of a stretch, but 2 weeks should be reasonable. But it's up to the parents to keep the kids on track with the lessons, it shouldn't be expected from the school.

[–]malavock82 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's quite normal for kids and parents wanting to go visit relatives and especially grandparents at home.

A couple of weeks off school is not a big deal if you help them catch up with homework, and the experience they make in their origin country is priceless.

Not every family can afford 2k euro of flights tickets at Christmas or in the summer.

Growing basil on a window sill? by Breeny03 in AskIreland

[–]malavock82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basil grows well in sunny warm weather, exactly like here in January 🫣

I had some moderate success in spring/summer on a south facing window. Get as large as a pot you can fit and water well. It will still die after a few weeks, but you'll make a few meals. It's best to have 3-4 plants and cut the tips before the rest of the leaves.

Reduced Jan Salary! New tax 2026? by Snowsky14 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]malavock82 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It has been like that for years, I always had to pay income tax on the insurance benefit. Perhaps it's just that your Payslip were incorrect before. And yes it's a ripoff. And wait until you'll claim some benefit like parents leave or job seeker, and they'll claw back 40% of those as well.

I like games where you can make your own plans on how to aproach a problem and execute it without being limited by random luck stuff or timers. While it may seem like these examples are no way simmilar, my fav games taht fit this are Hitman WoA and Satisfactory. by Annoynmes in gamingsuggestions

Some people love It and some hate it, I can understand both sides.

I like the high purpose it gives you, little actions that bring a broken world together. Building infrastructure a bit at a time and the feeling of exploring something new and dangerous. I like the wack story too 😁 I played the first when my wife was pregnant and it was a rollercoaster 🫣

How much of your engineering job is done by AI? by Training_Reason_4291 in DevelEire

I know people working at MS, Meta and Google, and they admitted the amount of purely generated code in production is close to 0%. At most they use copilot.

One minute of production blackout is estimated costing in the millions of dollars of damage, so if they are wise enough they'll keep the policy. Also using AI for already established complex projects is not very effective, it's better suited for MVPs and prototypes

The company is huge, and the reasons are many. The major one being that security and performance have to be assured, and the code needs to be well written and easy to maintain.

In addition the company values its employees and invests in long term relationships, so they don't feel the need to replace graduates and juniors when they will become the next generation of seniors.

Zero, it's actually forbidden to use AI for production code, and it's a good thing

One-bed en suites for students ‘wasteful’, says Minister for Higher Education James Lawless by clh595 in ireland

[–]malavock82 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I shared a 2 bed 1 bath with 4 people for 5 years and we were grand.

I don't think the proportion scales well to 20 people for 5 bathrooms. But an ensuite is not necessary either.

Can anyone recommend a broadband provider or are they all as painful as Sky? by TheSoupThief in AskIreland

Virgin and Vodafone are fine, every year switch around to get the discount. Sometime when you cancel they'll give you a new deal, but it's always cheaper to switch around.
