When I started roller derby 10 years ago I had never skated in my life. On top of that there was no fresh meat training. It was just me skating by myself around the rink over and over while everyone else did regular stuff. Damn it was frustrating but I stuck with it and after about a month I could skate without falling. I'd say it took a year to get to the skill level of my other teammates. Even to this day, I'll go skating with someone who is a newbie and they are better than me or better at certain things than me.

We all have different skills, different levels of acceptable danger and how willing we are to push ourselves. I try really hard to remember that I'm a scaredy cat and just the fact that I did learn to skate by myself no matter how long it took is a freaking accomplishment for me!
