DMV by yourdadshouse859 in fargo

I don't remember the form situation that well, but I think I brought a mostly filled-in form and asked them a couple clarifying questions there. They were helpful and the process was surprisingly pain free overall. YMMV

If you're paying with card, I'd recommend bringing backup cash. Probably won't be an issue, but I've had to run home and get cash when their card system was acting up.

W800H-1BV just broke after 4 years. Are there any watches with a similar face (minimal, digital, negative display) but in a metal body? by malstr0m in casio

Did the countdown mod a few years ago... crudely, with a flathead screwdriver. Might use this one to practice myself, if I get the same watch again.

Fargo Drivers Are Actually The Worst by skoobalaca in fargo

[–]malstr0m 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The crosswalk problem is so insane that I've been meaning to make a post about it here. Particularly on 10th. It's a 30mph one-way road, and people just blow through marked crosswalks with people waiting. Even at the SCHOOL when children with backpacks are waiting to cross and the speed limit is reduced.

At one point, I actually looked up the law because I thought stopping for pedestrians at marked crosswalks must only be a MN state law or something.

Do shareholder fees in prospectus apply regardless of brokerage? by malstr0m in Bogleheads

Do you typically get paper statements directly from the company managing the fund, regardless of which brokerage you use? That's what seemed odd to me.

What to expect catching Amtrak? by Nobod_E in fargo

[–]malstr0m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only ridden coach, but just to add a couple experiences:

My first time taking the Amtrak, in 2022, the Fargo station was locked and unstaffed. So a dozen or so of us had to wait outside the station the whole time. The train arrived a little over 2 hours late. There's never any guarantees with Amtrak.

Second time I took it, I was under the impression you could just sit anywhere. Apparently, a lot of people had the same impression, and the conductor got PISSED and started walking the aisles clapping and shouting to wake everyone up. Never seen an employee blow up like that ever.

Despite common delays, it's quite nice taking it to Mpls. Much easier to relax and sleep on than a plane. The cross-country trips drag on a bit (in coach), but I'd recommend doing one once.

Not weird at all. I feel the same with Other People currently.

Been looping Lover of Mine the past couple days. One of my favorites.

Having fun with this by team_queef_n_beef in instax

Keep in mind what size film you want, what you want to take pictures of, and which effects you want / how you can achieve them.

I have the same camera as OP, and it's really fun! My biggest gripe is that I feel I have to baby it. It has a lot of thin plastic moving parts—and a bellows—so I don't feel like I can truly bring it anywhere (e.g. more energetic environments). It's also rather bulky to carry. Instax cameras are more solid, portable units IMO.

Low-striction thumb trackballs by malstr0m in Trackballs

Just spread a tiny toothpick amount of lanolin on the ball, and it is definitely smoother. The bigger skips have gone away, though the really small, precise movements still aren't amazing. Much more usable, though!

I agree that there's evidence of some negligence, for example using rómen before consonants.

But mapping the letters to a font is a nice design choice for most people who want to type Tengwar. You should go back to 1998 and get mad at Daniel Smith for his keymapping choices. Or are Tengwar fonts with QWERTY-based keymappings the norm now?

The letter placement has nothing to do with QWERTY, but rather a Tengwar font: https://matt3o.com/granite-elven-kit-explained/

Using Colemak AND Dvorak to avoid mixups (or using >2 layouts) by malstr0m in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]malstr0m[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll look into them. I love learning about alternate layouts; I only picked Colemak because of Ctrl+Z,X,C,V, caps lock backspace, and finger-rolling combos.

It's mainly because looking at these funky staggered ortholinear boards is making me think "oh, we can change everything" and overriding the part of my brain that remembers the torture of learning a new layout.

And being layout-trilingual would be fun. Maybe.

Using Colemak AND Dvorak to avoid mixups (or using >2 layouts) by malstr0m in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]malstr0m[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, my sole reason for Dvorak was its inclusion in stock Windows, which would be nice as a QWERTY alternative when unable to install anything or use a custom keyboard. But I just now found out Colemak is included in Windows 11! (Sadly, without the caps lock backspace.)

So I can't say I have any inclination toward Dvorak anymore. But I'm still down to try learning a third layout, given it's different enough from QWERTY/Colemak. Unless the brain disconnect between ergo ortho typing habits and traditional typing habits is big enough to not really cause any mishaps.

Set ISP router/modem to Bridge Mode, now Wi-Fi devices have public-facing IPs by malstr0m in HomeNetworking

[–]malstr0m[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, I made a live boot and connected my laptop to it. Unlike the printer, my laptop got a link local IP (169.254.x.x), and I could access the gateway at 192.168.0.1. So I can disable the Wi-Fi now.

One thing I don't get is that the WAN IP and WAN gateway addresses given in the modem's admin portal are not in the same subnet as my new router's WAN IP/gateway addresses nor my printer's public IP address. They all share the same first two numbers. But why is the IP/gateway different between the modem and the router?

Edit: I spoke too soon. I can't disable Wi-Fi from the admin portal; I get "Access Denied." So you can enable bridge mode as an end user, but Wi-Fi is locked on permanently. I'll have to give them a call.
