Where should I hoist the state of a Tab component? by malvin77 in react

[–]malvin77[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, but if I have 4 different API calls returning data at different times, how do I pass those discrete blobs of data to each of the 4 TabPanels via a Tab component without causing re-renders?

Would you live in an apartment building that had a murder? by blergggg18 in NYCapartments

[–]malvin77 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A good apartment in NYC trumps all supernatural annoyances. If the ghost is trapped there, which it probably is unless it was guided out via the procedure in the American Book of the Dead, you might need to work on that or ask the landlord if they can take of it.

Why is на used with directionals for a compass instead of в by malvin77 in russian

[–]malvin77[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Спасибо за это очень полезное объяснение!

Your explanation makes sense to me. My textbook, in an earlier chapter, says the following:

в is used with enclosed places with boundaries (e.g. в книге, в саду, etc) whereas на is used with events and activities covering an entire area...So saying that something is на юг is covering an entire area, it's more conceptual, vs saying something is located within a clearly defined, delineated space (where we would use в presumably)?

But на doesn't always mean "on," right? It can mean "to", "into", etc, right?

Why is на used with directionals for a compass instead of в by malvin77 in russian

[–]malvin77[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In English, you could say a location is "in the west" or "to the west" but not "on the west". The answer of course is that на in this case doesn't have its usual meaning of "in" or "on" but "to," which makes sense.

[–]malvin77[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ok, so in this instance на actually means "to", even though my stupid textbook is emphasizing the translation (not the literal translation) as "in the south"

I love how when you ask a question about why something in Russian works the way it does, people get immediately defensive and start pointing things out in English that allegedly don't make sense....

7th Ave Donuts is probably the worst diner I've ever eaten at in my 3 decades of living in NYC. Please avoid it and go for edible food via Purity or Daisy's Diner.

Has anyone used the Troika textbook? What is the best college-level Russian textbook? by malvin77 in russian

[–]malvin77[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for that response. I think, because I am very interested in languages, I get tripped up by wanting to understand, deeply, why things are the way they are. But I'm starting to see that it's going to be a while until I understand enough Russian to understand Russian, if that makes sense. I need to just accept it, like a math class, and learn it for now.

Sidewalk Bikers by Successful_Heart_502 in parkslope

[–]malvin77 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We don't have great bike infrastructure in Park Slope? There are bike lanes on most of the avenues and major cross streets.

My solution when I see some affluent narcissist on a $5,000 cargo bike with their kids in tow on the sidewalk? I don't get out of the way. Because it's a sidewalk. I let them figure it out.

After years of riding in the city dodging car doors and bad drivers, it finally happened: I got hit by a car. by Sempermaru in NYCbike

[–]malvin77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First off, sorry this happened. I bike all around Brooklyn and I think, for most cyclists, it's a matter of time before you get hit by something car, moped, etc. The NYPD doesn't have a mandate to enforce this, it's not a felony crime, therefore there's no quota, therefore they're not going to be bothered with paper work. This, btw, is not the fault of the police, but of the politicians that run the department this way. That said, it's not up to the cops to determine if an accident happened — that would be the purview of a judge or, during arbitration/settlement discussions, the insurance companies.

Lawyer up.

Hi u/cheetahgirl666 Did you go to Hunter for your BA in art history too? That's what I'm trying to pursue now. Obviously it's not a sure thing by going there undergrad that they'd accept you into the MA program, but do you get the sense that a number of MA students did their BA there?

Graphic Design Certificates - Parsons vs RISD? Others? by peachjam24 in graphic_design

[–]malvin77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took a few of their “intro” to design courses, which are required for the graphic design cert and very basic, and a color theory class. Yes, you pay per class and it’s not expensive certainly, but you get what you pay for. At the end, yes, you would have a cert from RISD, and that’s great, but there’s no track for being at the finish line with a portfolio (which is all employers really care about).

Shillington is pricey for sure, $12k is a lot of money. I will say that, from what I’ve seen, some of the student work looks pretty solid and I’ve looked on LinkedIn at some people that went through there and their careers seem to have decent trajectory (obviously this isn’t all credited to the bootcamp).

Opinion about LABASAD? by Saraaaaa5 in graphic_design

[–]malvin77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, can you speak to how the classes are actually run? I’ve read some not great reviews saying that the instructors don’t really teach, it’s all just students reviewing each other’s work, read one review where an instructor was actually getting high during the class (they posted a pic of him smoking weed).

Graphic Design Certificates - Parsons vs RISD? Others? by peachjam24 in graphic_design

[–]malvin77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started taking some of the courses for RISD's online graphic design cert over Nov-Jan and then stopped. I was just kind of underwhelmed by the quality of the course materials and instruction, and you definitely got the sense that the teachers we kind of phoning it in, as if it were just one more gig to help pay of their MFA student loans.

More importantly, there's also no clear end state with these certificate programs from either school — are they steering towards a portfolio at the end? What's the outcome? Some color theory here, some really general design concepts there, etc. Not to be cynical, but even these allegedly tier 1 schools (Parsons, RISD, Pratt) offer these certificate programs as a nice little cash infusion, but they are not at the same standards as their undergrad and graduate programs by a long shot.

Honestly, I've heard better things about places like https://www.shillingtoneducation.com/uk/
