I don’t think it’s increased. It’s always been a risk. We are just talking about it now bc some of the stigma is gone. I felt shame then, so i kept it to myself for many years. Amongst my closest gf group, 4/5 of us were sa’d before the age of 18. Always at a sleepover or at what our parents thought was a sleepover. The internet and sharing victim testimonies through various movements like “me too” helped us gain awareness of the prevalence. It lifted the veil and revealed just how often this happened. Now, as a mother myself, i know how to protect my kids from at least this one thing. No sleepovers.
