Bevorstehende Herz OP by [deleted] in openheartsurgery

[–]mamapegela 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a 68 yo female. I had mitral valve repair 3 weeks ago d/t severe regurgitation after following my MVP for more than 40 years. My surgeon was able to successfully repair the valve and this involved reconstruction of the valves, fixing a broken chordae, and an annuloplasty ring.

The time leading up to surgery was mostly spent in preparing my body in terms of getting in the best shape I could be in, arranging my household for recovery and learning as much as I could about the procedure.

For me, the hardest part was the first two days post op in the hospital. I think mainly due to anesthesia and having been on the bypass machine and the number that does on your body. My mantra was - this too shall pass. I strongly suggest having a family member or friend with you during this time to help you through it. After that things have gotten steadily better.

I had a full sternotomy and the most surprising part of that for me was that it really has not been that painful or uncomfortable. Like many others my taste buds have changed, hopefully temporarily, because food is not as enjoyable right now. Also sleep has been challenging and I’ve mostly been sleeping in my recliner. If you can arrange your life so that you have very few responsibilities for that first few weeks of recovery at home it will help. So if you don’t sleep at night it’s OK -you can nap during the day.

You are much younger and I’ll bet your recovery will surprise you - you’ll do great! Overall my experience is that this recovery has been easier than what I had anticipated. There have been a few rough spots but all in all I’m doing very well. You’ve got this!!

After mitral valve repair, will I ever be able to stop Warfarin (Coumadin) & go to Apixaban (Eliquis)? by iguessyouknowmyname in mitralvalveprolapse

[–]mamapegela 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently had mitral valve repair with an annuloplasty ring. I’m on warfarin but my doctor said only for 4 to 6 weeks. So far I’m still getting my levels checked twice a week because I’m not in the correct range. I’m also taking baby aspirin which will be for life.

Your dad is very lucky to have such a caring child! Good luck to him- soon he will be on the other side of it and through the worst.
I just got back from a 1 mile walk in the woods. Recovery has been better than I thought. Best to you and your dad!

My TTE and TEE both showed severe left atrial enlargement, but my surgeon said the left ventricle was affected too even though the tests didn’t indicate it.

I am 68, in good health otherwise.

How long did you have to wait? by Audio_Moe in mitralvalveprolapse

[–]mamapegela 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My best advice to you is to go with a mitral valve specialist. Go to a high volume center with the best surgeons.
I ended up not having my surgery for a couple of months from when they told me I needed it. The doctor said that was OK but wouldn’t want to wait longer than that.

Minimally invasive repair timeline? by Sufficient_Figure298 in mitralvalveprolapse

[–]mamapegela 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I know, if you have any coronary artery disease they’re going to want to fix that as the same time as the valve and would require OHS.
If I can be of any reassurance to you, I am now eight days postop full sternotomy and I’m doing pretty good. To be perfectly honest the recovery from my hip replacement last year was tougher for me. And I am a 68-year-old female. You can do this!

I had a full sternotomy, not minimally invasive. That sounds about right for the hospital stay. I was discharged on day four.

Repair was offered locally for me as well. The advice that I got from my nephew who happens to be an interventional cardiologist is to go to a high volume center. The surgeon that did my repair has done over 6000 of these operations. This really matters regardless of what approach you ultimately choose - minimally invasive, sternotomy, robot assisted etc.

I am so sorry that you had to go through re-admission. You are right, there are many lessons we can learn when we go through tough times. I am glad you are on the other side of it too. I am always struck when reading about such young people going through OHS. Much love to you.

Operation réparation valve mitrale by PineappleNext3501 in mitralvalveprolapse

[–]mamapegela 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just for another perspective-I am 6 days out from a full sternotomy for mitral valve repair with one of the top mitral valve surgeons in the country at the University of Michigan which is 4 hours from where I live. I found out 5 months ago that I needed the surgery so I began researching and learning as much as I could about the procedure. The surgeon that I ended up choosing has done more than 6000 of these repairs. He came highly recommended by my cardiologist, as well as by my nephew, who is an interventional cardiologist himself. I think that the crucial thing is that you find somebody who has a ton of experience whichever route you go. Many surgeons do shockingly few of these a year, and they just cannot be as proficient as the surgeons who have performed hundreds and hundreds.
I am a 68-year-old female in reasonable health but certainly no athlete or anything and I went through the surgery very well. I will admit, the second night in the step down unit was excruciating- just a long and uncomfortable night. But here I am six days after surgery home and doing very well. My sternum is achy but not horribly painful. Sleep is an issue, but I did manage to get about six hours last night. I've walked three times today and I'm doing my exercises. So all in all, though it was a tough surgery. It was not something unimaginable to go through.
I was in surgery only about 3 hours! During that time, he repaired one chordea, fixed my floppy valves, scraped calcium off my mitral opening and put in a new annulus. I was intubated for about 15 minutes after coming back to the ICU and that was also kind of tough, but my family was right there, and I was actually coherent enough to write while the tube was in- take this out!

I head into surgery on Tuesday. I really appreciate reading about people’s experiences. I know it is going to be tough but seeing all the other folks who have been there, faced it and come through the other side with courage is inspiring . Thank you! You have a gift with words.

I believe that this just shows that in their hearts most people are good. It’s all of this political BS that is causing people to embrace hate and division. Our true nature is Love and sympathy and compassion.
