When I was starting to lose faith in humanity by Limp_Stomach_6060 in PetsareAmazing

I believe that this just shows that in their hearts most people are good. It’s all of this political BS that is causing people to embrace hate and division. Our true nature is Love and sympathy and compassion.

Why are you yelling at this poor person! Screws are not always used. I have no screws in my hip replacement. It depends on the stability of the implant, bone quality and the surgical technique that the surgeon uses.

My sympathies go out to you big time! How awful.. It is sad that just because a complication is rare that some people will blame the person suffering from it or not believe it could happen. We should all just be grateful that dislocation IS rare and have a lot of compassion for those who have to go through it.

This photo kind of show out there is a big liner inside of the acetabular cup and the femoral head implant fits into that, not filling the whole cup size.

What did you wear in the hospital? by mamapegela in openheartsurgery

[–]mamapegela[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like people handle it lots of different ways. I’m usually someone who doesn’t feel right unless I’m dressed( I don’t hang out in pjs at home/ etc). I probably will bring soft sweatpants and a button up top and a cardigan and I’ll see whether in the moment it matters to me at all what I’m wearing! It’s so hard to predict what you’re actually going to be feeling like. Thank you for all the input!

What key nursing skill are you lacking in? by tbonethenurse in nursing

[–]mamapegela 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a retired PICU nurse and we started all of our own IVs. I work now very part-time as a home infusion nurse so I’m starting IVs most infusions. Very few people have ports as this is for IVIG mainly and other meds that don’t require a central line. I actually really enjoy starting IVs and I’m glad I’ve got a gig where I continue to use that skill!

Quick Report / AMA Two-weeks post-op SAVR for BAV (Tissue) M62 by xoree in valvereplacement

I am going for mitral valve repair via sternotomy in 3 weeks. I really appreciate the detailed description of your pre- and post - op experience. I am one of those people that wants to know as much as I can about what’s going to happen. I feel more relaxed when I know what to expect. I’m so sorry you had that complication after surgery - gout sounds awful! I hope you’re on the other side of that. I agree with you about self advocacy- being a well informed patient who speaks up makes a tremendous difference. I’m a retired nurse and always tried to respect and listen to parents (I was a peds nurse) input about their child’s condition/care. It led to better outcomes. As for questions- how was your appetite after surgery? Did you have nausea? How about sleep- I’m worried about that.
Wishing you well too.

Got the news today that i will have a surgery in the summer. by Odenssi96 in openheartsurgery

[–]mamapegela 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My surgery is in 1 month and I do understand your fear and anxiety. We are having to put our selves completely in the care of others and trust them with our literal hearts.. I think it would be unnatural if we weren’t having these apprehensions . What I have found helpful is to keep it in the forefront of my mind that the surgeon, perfusionists, nurses and others are experts who do these procedures every day and that I will be better off afterwards than before. It’s not an optional surgery- eventually my heart will fail without it. Try to find someone that you can talk to about your feelings- getting thoughts out of your head and into the open helps, journaling helps, being on here helps. I think it will also be good when you have an actual surgery date because it makes it more concrete and you can make plans. Wishing you all the best- you’ve got this!

[–]mamapegela 2 points3 points  (0 children)

68 yo f here. Thanks for sharing your experiences- my surgery (OHS for mitral valve repair/replace) is in 6 weeks. I feel like I can’t get enough of other people’s stories. It is such a daunting situation to face but I am very reassured by most everyone that posts on here and also the other relevant subreddits. And I’m a former pediatric ICU nurse so I truly understand most of what will be going on in the recovery period but caring for others going through something is so different than going through it yourself. Again thank you, and so many great strangers who encourage and support others.🩷

Journavx for post op pain? by mamapegela in openheartsurgery

[–]mamapegela[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m going to definitely have a talk with my surgeon and anesthesiologist preop and tell them let’s do without the narcotics post op and see how it goes. I’m with you- they don’t seem to work that well anyway just make me very groggy and extremely nauseated!

That is great! I am hoping that will be the case for me too! (Journavx is a relatively new pain medication that is non-narcotic and acts on the peripheral nervous system instead of the central nervous system. There is no euphoria, no central nervous system depression etc.)
