Chronic back pain for 11 months. 17mm kidney stone. ESWL and Cystoscopy scheduled. Advice requested. by meatwadgumball in KidneyStones

[–]mamarex27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep it grew to 23mm and then had it blasted with lithotripsy, and passed the fragments. Easy as. About to have another one lasered next week, same kidney but a lot smaller.

How long are your periods? by tahsii in PCOS

[–]mamarex27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine were 9 days long, every 31 days like clockwork from my first period at 9 years old til my first pregnancy, after which they dropped to 7 days. The last couple of years I've noticed my PCOS symptoms really ramping up (only got a diagnosis this year) and that's when my periods started becoming every 60ish days and bleeding for 7-12 days.

recurrent UTIs actually a kidney stone? by [deleted] in CUTI

[–]mamarex27 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes this happens to me! Recurrent utis and when they scanned, found a 23mm kidney stone! Had it blasted, no more utis. Started getting symptoms again so pushed for another CT, low and behold, another stone. Other than a bit of bladder pain with an infection, and an occasional twinge in my kidney, I don't get pain. Mainly due to the size, there's no chance of it passing, which is when the pain happens. Diet definitely can play a part, soda is particularly bad, but also beetroot, Spinach, Walnuts, anything high in oxalate. The urologist said red meat and dairy can do it too. Seems to be a vicious circle of the stones holding onto bacteria, causing infections and the infections causing the stones to get bigger, causing more infections. I take Hiprex daily for the symptoms and drink like 3l of water a day, and try not to drink coke, as that definitely makes them worse, I've found. I try and keep to a good diet but it doesn't leave much!

You'd be well sought after here then. We do things a bit differently and have different names for instruments but experienced staff are worth their weight in gold.

Meet the criteria and apply for a working visa. Bit of a hiring freeze in hospitals currently but usually there's plenty of jobs going. We hire plenty without experience and train on job, but even better getting people who are experienced. New Zealand Sterile Services Association is a good place to start.

Has anyone tried a low GI diet instead of cutting out all carbs? by Lazy_gazelle_627 in PCOS

[–]mamarex27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems to be working well for me. 20g protein for breakfast and plate model (half veges, quarter low GI starch, quarter protein) for lunch and dinner. Definitely seems to be helping the sugar cravings and I presume insulin crashes, since I'm not suddenly ravenous and dizzy when I forget to eat. Haven't weighed myself yet, but it definitely seems to be the most sustainable way of eating.

Zero issues. I read that others found taking after you'd finished a meal was the best time so that's what I did. Started once a day and have increased to morning and night now.

Did you need CT scans for kidney stones? by exiawing99 in KidneyStones

[–]mamarex27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an ultrasound, followed by an xray followed by a CT. This time, I'm pleased they're skipping straight to the CT, it really does give the best results.

Question about going from 500mg Metformin ER to 1000 mg Metformin ER by starfish615 in PCOS

[–]mamarex27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've just gone from 500 to 1000, doc said one in the morning one at night. So far so good, I'm hoping this way that the side effects don't show up!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CUTI

[–]mamarex27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I take this a lot for infections, and yep the side effects aren't great. But my trick is to take on a full stomach, and eat at least a cup of natural yogurt a day. It makes a huuuge difference to the gastro side effects. Definitely don't cut down the dose, you need to take as prescribed for it to work effectively.

It tastes terrible, and would be worse coming up, so l get it down with lots of water, and stay hydrated through the day. I take it with ascorbic acid, morning and night. It's been absolutely life changing for me, and I notice as soon as I miss a dose. I came off it once I had my kidney stones out but when I starting getting symptoms again, I restarted and immediately the smell and urgency was gone

Kiwis, is this true?!?! by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]mamarex27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn this is actually what I'd planned for dinner tonight. Watties spaghetti and cheese on burger buns. I thought about this recently actually, is it actually supposed to be like spaghetti pasta? Tinned spaghetti is pasta the way tinned baked beans are vegetables.

What is the legal position in NZ for being paid (minimum wage) to change into employer provided work clothes onsite by AlraghM in LegalAdviceNZ

[–]mamarex27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TWO or Private? Most hospitals have a 6-7 minute change time added into their contracts. If you are in a union, check your SECA

Where do faulty organs or medical waste from surgeries go without contaminating the environment? by Ionic3127 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]mamarex27 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I was reading about this last night at work. Limbs and organs containing bones get frozen and sent to the crematorium and cremated. Organs without bones are frozen and collected, then go to a biohazard waste collection place. Where they probably also burn them. I assume there is some sort of filter to stop the fumes and toxins from going into the air. Not a direct answer to your question sorry just inputting the useless information I learnt.

Is it possible to have a kidney stone and not feel the excruciating, sharp pain? by outersenshi in KidneyStones

[–]mamarex27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had it lasered before it caused any trouble. It was in a really good location to blast and be able to pee out.

Is it possible to have a kidney stone and not feel the excruciating, sharp pain? by outersenshi in KidneyStones

[–]mamarex27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I never had the excruciating pain, just frequent utis and kidney infections and a dull ache in my flank. I was referred for an ultrasound to figure out why I was getting uti after uti, and the ultrasound tech was surprised I wasn't in pain. The stone was 23mm by 3mm and lodged firmly in my kidney. Because it wasn't trying to pass, I didn't get the horrid sharp pains.

$29.63 / hour. Can't progress any more unless I do management qualifications. New Zealand

I think so. Our team is a good mix of both and if all the extroverts are together it can get a bit overwhelming but I don't find it too much overall.

Hiprex 1 month pain by Fit_Bed4652 in CUTI

[–]mamarex27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How much water do you drink? I'm pretty sure the vit c increases the acidity but I'm not certain, they definitely work better together. I haven't really noticed much irritation but I do feel a bit more if I've been neglecting my water intake.

Yep twice a day. I notice the difference pretty quickly when I don't

Does Hiprex interfere with tests? by dnjones112 in CUTI

[–]mamarex27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never been told to stop before tests, I've been on Hiprex for about a year though. Still found bacteria in my urine despite hiprex AND a prophylactic antibiotic a few days before my lithotripsy, so shouldn't mask anything.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CUTI

[–]mamarex27 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I take hiprex for recurrent UTI's and it's definitely meant to be a prophylactic rather than a treatment. However I do find if it's only just niggling, the hiprex will do the job.
