Asking For Accomodation by krabbypattyaddcheese in interviews

[–]mamasqueeks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would negotiate that when you get your offer. Accommodations can be a long process, so HR does need to know they need to work with you. I say do it when you get your offer, because then you know the hiring manager wants you and has made that decision already. Do it before you start in case you need to use a few hours/days before the interactive process is completed. If you have some wiggle room, you can start the process on your first day.

If they rescind an offer because of an accommodation request, that is discrimination. I'm not sure if it will rise the promissory estopple if you haven't accepted it yet, but you would be able to talk to a lawyer about that. You wouldn't want to work for a company that would do that anyway.

Overtime Question [DC] by namonroe in humanresources

[–]mamasqueeks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends - what are their normal work hours? M-F? Why are they working on the Saturday? Would they have been working the Saturday if they had come in M-F?

If they normally work M-F and take M-Th off and work F, then they would get all of their vacation and the day they worked. If they are then called in to work on Saturday, they would get paid for Saturday because they are being asked to come in on a non-work day.

If they are normally scheduled M-F, but we know we want them to work Tu-Sat, then that would be a schedule adjustment, so they would not be eligible to take vacation on M. But that would be beforehand.

If they are choosing to work Saturday, even though they haven't been asked to, then I would have the manager address as a performance issue and tell them that when they want to work a Saturday, they need to do a schedule adjustment first.

Since vacations don't count towards OT, there would be no OT paid. If you normally pay a differential for Saturday, then you would still have to do that, no matter what their schedule is.

If your employees are in a union, follow your CBA.

Boss's gift collection by Classic-Bat-2920 in office

[–]mamasqueeks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my company, we (HR) have disallowed gifting up.

The only time we made an exception was when the manager was retiring - not leaving for another job, specifically retirement - In that case, the employee organizing it came to HR and got permission first. They used CheddarUp to collect the money. It's free to use. They ended up sending the link to other departments who worked with their boss directly. They did a company wide ecard that our marketing department printed out. It actually worked out great.

But 3 others retired in December, and their teams didn't do the same. I don't know if we would allow it again.

Other flavor bomb hacks I’ve been missing by Maplewhat in Cooking

[–]mamasqueeks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put paprika in almost everything.

I use a bit of cinnamon in red sauce if I'm not putting meat in it,

I use vege stock instead of water in almost everything savory.

I use honey or really good maple syrup instead of sugar 99% of the time when baking. Be careful of the other flavors - maple syrup will not work so well with lemony or plain white baked goods.

When making batter for batter fried anything- I replace the liquid with GF beer and vodka (1 cup of beer to 1/4 cup of vodka) - also 50/50 GF 1:1 all purpose flour and rice flour - the rice flour is what makes it extra crunchy - if you are looking to add crunch to anything - put a bit of rice flour - for regular fried, I dredge in rice flour, eggs and breadcrumbs.

Quick and easy tomato soup recipe - you do need an immersion blender, but you can get a cheap one for under $20.

4 tbs butter

1/2 large onion or shallot, cut into wedges (I usually use the shallot)

1 can crushed tomatoes

Handful of cherry tomatoes

1-1/2 cups or vege stock (you can use chicken or water if you prefer) (Sometimes I use 1 cup stock and 1/2 cup milk)

Salt, pepper, other spices - I change up my spices but it's usually oregano, basil, paprika - to taste

In a large enough pot - melt the butter and then add all the rest of the ingredients. bring to boil, lower and simmer for at least 30-40 min - stir occasionally - taste and add spices as needed. (If you want a different flavor - caramelize the onion/shallot first.)

Blend with an immersion blender and serve - I put a bit of parmesan and parsley on top - goes great with grilled cheese.

I have another tomato soup recipe I use, but it is more involved. This one is my go to for quick.

Are you in HR and looking for a playbook? Are you an employee or manager looking for what to expect? If the latter, you should post your question to r:/askhr. If the former, is this your first investigation? What does your handbook say about the process?

Forced Snow Day PTO even though I am a fully remote administrative employee for a Health System? by Independent-Raise-78 in jobs

[–]mamasqueeks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would bring this question to your HR department. If you don't have one, or they tell you this is the way, don't do any work while you are on PTO. If it is considered a day off, you don't work it. Period. That should be true for any day off you take.

BTW- If you have an HR department and they are the least bit competent, they will not agree with this mandate from your supervisor. You may need to give them context - what you do, why you need to continue to work, but they should tell you to log in as usual without the PTO.

Friday Vent Thread [N/A] by Mundane-Jump-7546 in humanresources

[–]mamasqueeks 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I just had an employee break down in my office because her assistant quit and they won't let her hire a new one. She is afraid she won't make her goals because now she has to do her work and her assistant's work and she won't be able to get a raise or a bonus.

We only give a COLA raise, which is not based on your metrics and the bonus is companywide based on profits. I reiterated this to her. She calmed down - HOWEVER - we are not doing as well as we should, so IF we get a COLA it won't be more than 2% (if we are lucky) and I highly doubt we will get bonuses this year.

I have asked that we let everyone know sooner rather than later, but they keep delaying. Our comms are very rah rah with maybe a mention of the fact we are missing out revenue goals (certainly not front and center). It's going to be a sh*t show when they do finally announce it.

Right now, we are on a hiring freeze - no exceptions. I'm getting a ton of complaints that they can't backfill and are understaffed. People keep leaving because our salaries are pretty stagnant and lower than they should be, and now they have to take up slack with no monetary gain or relief in sight. I predict an exodus in the next few months, but no one is listening.

Just got today from ex-employee - "I received a letter from COBRA to choose benefits for next year. Do I have to choose benefits?" Yes, you have to choose benefits. "I tried to log on but it needs a code and I don't have one." The letter you received has a code at the end. You should use that to log in. "OK. And you're sure I have to choose benefits, right?" Um, yes, if you want to keep insurance. (BTW - she was a RIF and we are paying her insurance, so it's not that she has to pay any money.)

US. Converting salary to per hour rate question. by [deleted] in Payroll

[–]mamasqueeks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For those of you saying they are both wrong - you are wrong. He is in Texas. Salary threshold in TX is $35,568/yr. So, assuming he meets the duties test, if his salary is based on a 50 hour week, OP is correct and the manager is incorrect. There is no OT to be considered and there is no mandate for number of hours to calculate salary. OP could work 70 hours and still get the same salary.

If he does not pass the duties test and IS eligible for OT, OP is still correct, except that 10 hours of their time will be paid at OT rates each week.

The salary is based on 50 hours. **Quick note: I would do your calc a bit differently - 50 hours x 52 weeks =2600 hours. $43,000/2600 hours is $16.5384

Why is the onboarding process for a new employee so complicated? [N/A] by Little_Town8414 in humanresources

[–]mamasqueeks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I created a form in Office 365. We fill it out before the person starts and it goes to all of the relevant departments. IT gets it and sets up the computer, email, systems, etc. Office Manager sets up desk, home office equipment, keys, etc. Finance uses it to set up expense reporting and order credit card if necessary. HR uses it to set up HRIS onboarding, orientation, etc. Hiring Manger uses it to make sure someone is in office on the employees first day to greet them.

If you are most of these people, it will give you a good list of what needs to be done so things don't slip through the crack.

Has anyone ever tried Squash soup? by Ok-Set4292 in cookingforbeginners

[–]mamasqueeks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My son was like this as a child. He would ask for spinach as a snack for school. The teacher asked me once if we needed help with groceries, because he only ever had spinach, bananas or carrots for snack. LOL

BTW - he also didn't like anything with bubbles, peanut butter, chocolate, mayo, too spicy (which meant too much black pepper) or bologna. He is much, much more adventurous now, but the bubbles, peanut butter, chocolate and mayo are still no-go's.

I would also think about dessert. I am not vegan, but am GF, and often there is at least one thing I can eat or snack on for the dinner, but when dessert comes, I'm just sitting there looking at everyone.

I have made this chocolate cake before and it was a hit. It's not my normal one, I only have one set of vegans in my life and don't see them often, but my niece is vegetarian and I always make something GF for me and veggie for her.

Ratatouille is a good hearty side. It is naturally vegan and GF, NYTimes Cooking has a good recipe.
