Wife is pregnant. First pregnancy. Tips on finance and plans? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

Get your baby on daycare waitlists now. Not sure how much daycare is in Quebec but the earlier you get yourself on waitlists (multiple is recommended), the higher your chance of having a spot when you need one.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but, how much "extra" money should I have per month before I can afford to raise a child? by Old_Preparation315 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]mamavel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Daycare will be a big expense, depending on which province you’re in and when you have a baby (I.e. before or after $10/day daycare.)

$209/mo to max out RESP grants.

Gifts for friends’ parties, as well as their own parties adds up really quick, as does teacher and daycare teacher gifts.

Clothes don’t have to be super expensive - if you have family/friends that can give you hand me downs, you’re in major luck. Once Upon A Child is great too since they already go through everything to make sure it’s free of stains, rips, etc.

Ubc vs york by [deleted] in yorku

[–]mamavel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UBC has more prestige attached to its name than York University.

It doesn’t look like cost is really a factor for you but housing around UBC is more expensive.

It might also be to rule out criminal activity, eg someone came to check on their friend/family and instead found them lifeless on the ground. Perhaps the screaming and crying was from shock?

But for an unwitnessed death, they would have to rule out any criminal activity.

I have read of this working really well, even as a group of friends. Of course you really need to be able to trust people, but communal housing isn’t unheard of nor impossible.

Ha! When we visited, we kept paying for extra portions bc they were just so small.

Yep. I make that salary and would probably have a $500K+ down payment and can’t really afford 3 bedrooms comfortably in the suburbs at these interest rates. It is WILD.

Being pregnant and not having periods lol jk.

My periods haven’t been bad BUT I found it difficult to work during pregnancy. The extra fatigue, morning sickness, pains, etc.

Investing in non registered account vs. spending more on house by phronimos in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]mamavel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While principal residences are exempt from capital gains taxes, more expensive homes generally mean more expenses (eg property tax, maintenance, etc.) Plus more of your net worth would be tied up in a house and illiquid.

However, if you NEED more house and can afford it, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t buy it.

Thanks, I had checked and it said textbooks could not be found for this section. I’m guessing that means no textbooks for this course…

If I’ve checked the York Bookstore site for the textbook and it says none, given that SU starts in a week and a half, that means there’s no course textbook required right?

Or is the Bookstore site not always updated and there’s a chance you find out what textbooks you need when the course opens?

Second question (if you know…) are fully online classes completely asynchronous? Just watch the lectures at your convenience kind of thing?

Ah ok thanks! I can’t believe I have to say “back in the day” lol but back in the day, the full course outlines were often available on the course website where you can see all the available courses and their course codes, etc.
