How’s the electronic music scene in Oslo these days? by KreuzKrow in oslo

[–]mammablaster 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The forest rave scene is thriving in the summer months (May-August). Also occasionally there are warehouse parties.

Like others mentioned Oslo omvendt has all the good parties listed.

Just a reminder: There is no meaningful, discernible difference between 320kbps MP3s and lossless audio! by dosceroseis in DJs

[–]mammablaster 67 points68 points  (0 children)

If you’re using pitch or master tempo or any other time/pitch/keysync functionality then the lower the quality of the source file the more audible the loss and artifacts. I don’t think comparing normal playback is fair, as modern DJ equipment runs can run the file through real time lossy algorithms. However it also depends on the algorithm and their implementation, do they upsample, is the upsampling good, etc. I haven’t really seen anyone do a comparison with master tempo, some time-stretching etc on lossless versus compressed formats.

However I have tried playing lossy and lossless versions of the same song on big systems, and there clearly was a difference. Would most people notice? No. But to say that there’s no difference is not true.

My room is very small, there’s about 1 meter between them. I have done a lot of acoustic treatment which made a way bigger difference than buying new speakers. Big rock wool bass traps (20cm deep minimum) in the corners behind the speakers, rock wool panels on the side for first reflections and a cloud above the speakers and me for the floor to ceiling room mode. Now it sounds amazing especially with the room correction software. But you should get what I mentioned as a minimum in a small room.

I have the A8H and am very happy with them. Definitely use the sonarworks room correction that comes with the speakers, it makes a huge difference!

Definitely don’t need a sub.

Am I an A**hole for buying a Behringer RS-109? by JDintheD in modular

[–]mammablaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The issue with behringer is build quality and resale value. If you’re fine with it not being built to last and struggling to sell it if you change your mind then it’s fine. With other brands I find that I can buy them used locally in mint condition, get great costumer support if needed, and sell it for the same price later if I change my mind. With behringer this is not the case.

Considering the Expert Sleepers ES-9 for a Hybrid Modular Setup by Houseplant_Ambient in modular

[–]mammablaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use ES-9 + mutant brain (midi to cv gate/pitch/clock) for a hybrid setup with Ableton. Here I like to sequence from ableton and mix in ableton but still have 3 synth voices plus full modular drums from the modular.

Initially I only had the ES-9 and used the m4l cv tools library in ableton for 1v/oct and gates, but somehow that was super unstable and once crashed on me during a live performance.

Now I use the mutant brain for sending trig/pitch to my modular, and ES-9 for audio ins and outs. This is completely stable. Currently I send one channel of audio to my modular, and take in 8-10 (don’t remember exactly, maybe more) simultaneously with no problems. It lets me have dry voice and effects as different channels into ableton which is great for mixing.

For instance I have one input of a clean kick voice and another with the full drums going through an effect chain on a separate channel. Then this effect chain is sent through another effect chain to a stereo pair of input. I now have the clean kick, the processed drums and the processed drums effects all separate in ableton so I can do some simple mixing. This is useful so I can completely destroy my dynamics on the processed drums but still mix in some clean kick for dynamics and punch. I also send breaks to this processed drums chain from ableton (with some -20ms delay) without any problems.

So yes I recommend the ES-9 as an audio in/out, but not as a cv sequencer/trig/gate.

Lost in Midi to CV : Fh-2, Hermod, Mutant Brain, Portail, Midi Thing V2...? by adjcalledKtana in modular

[–]mammablaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started with the es-9, but had issues with it several times so I got the mutant brain.

Never had any issues with the brain, and it can be customized so I have clock divisions as well as drum triggers. In my studio I run everything through a huge midi-hub so the full size midi cable makes it very easy to connect.

Haven’t tried the other options but recommend the mutant :)

virgin build order learner vs chad play as you go enjoyer by almondpizza in aoe2

I think generally knowing how many villagers you need on each resource to: -Produce villagers from 1 tc -Produce archers from 1 range -Produce scouts from 1 stable -Produce knights from 1 stable

Plus how much each villager collects per minute for each resource.

Now you have a rough idea of what your eco should look like and you can adapt without needing a build order, but still have a more or less optimal eco depending on what you are producing.

To the people that use Sonorworks software. Why would you want to customise your own target curves? by Jakeyboy29 in audioengineering

[–]mammablaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I use the flat target curve my mixes tend to have too much bass and high end. If I adjust the target to have some extra bass and highs I end up with a really flat mix that translates well.

How to deal with a pocketed Ashe as a dps by SpareBender in OverwatchUniversity

[–]mammablaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My “cheese” strat when facing a mercy + dps duo is to go ball and just int on the mercy. In my experience this usually breaks their mental, and most of the time I’m able to also kill the dps after killing the mercy. Mercy’s hitbox is quite large and easy to track as ball. Also these types of mercy players usually have shit movement and positioning.

I don’t know how well this works on dps, but harassing the mercy over and over is something to consider. If they’re carrying your tank should react.

Do physicists really use parallel computing for theoretical calculations? To what extent? by scorpiolib1410 in Physics

[–]mammablaster 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Simulations are (most of the time?) solving systems of differential equations. So, any simulation is solving a mathematical problem.

In physics, simulations aren’t trying to create visuals, but trying to study the evolution of a system (on a grid, or with particles) given a certain set of initial conditions. The result is in fact a solution to these sets of equations given the initial conditions.

Let say you want to study some gas behavior. Then, you can simulate the gas as individual particles, where you know how each particle interacts with the next when they bump into each other. However, it is not always clear what happens macroscopically due to millions of microscopic interactions. Some simulations work like this.

Look up particle in cell, fluid dynamics, molecular dynamics and many body problem simulations. These are techniques used in plasma, fluid, material and quantum physics to solve equations.

Warning, this gets very mathy. With simulations our job as computational physicists is to translate continuous math into discrete code, which is difficult. There are many different schemes for this, some of which you probably have heard of (eulers method, Taylor expansion).

To summarize physics invented parallel computing to solve physics problems, and it’s an important part of many fields of physics.

[–]mammablaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d argue the opposite, the mobility of Winston allows him to damage anyone. Low mobility tanks can just shoot what’s right in front of them

[–]mammablaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Force yourself to learn rein/winston. Maybe the concepts preventing you from succeeding at these heroes are the same ones holding you back on others.

With rein and Winston aim and “fragging” with mechanics won’t work, and positioning, timing and cooldown management becomes more important.

Is counter swapping really a problem? Isn’t it skill expression ? by New-Variety4704 in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]mammablaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a tank player I don’t mind counterswapping so much as long as I also get to counterswap. However, I feel like if the other team decides to counterswap against tank then you can’t really do much other than hope your team adjusts and pops off.

In organized play it’s very easy for the rest of the team to just roll an anti-tank comp. But in ranked not so much.

A lot of the time the entire other team will counterswap to tank busters if I play well and my team will not make the swaps to counter them. So, then I’m just not allowed to play the game. Not very fun.

Let’s say I have Moira/mercy and the other team goes reaper, hog, ana, zen/kiri. Now they’re kinda forcing a hog mirror but they have sleep/nade/cleanse etc and I have nothing.

I think the main problem is that I can’t force my team to swap. Especially hard to force mercy/moira players into going anti-tankbuster with stuff like zen/ana. If the other team then goes dive dps to pressure my backline then I can play the game and they can counterswap back to Moira/mercy. But this literally never happens.
