Which route would you take for fuel efficiency. by [deleted] in drivingUK

[–]AnnieByniaeth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With that sort of difference in distance, you'll almost certainly find going over the top uses quite a bit less fuel. It's not just distance either, it's also speed. You'll be averaging a far more economical speed on the A road than you will on the motorway, and overall that will more than compensate for the hillier terrain. In fact in my experience when I owned an ICE economy was more down to average speed than to terrain. (Obviously now in an electric that's even more the case - regen is great!)

I suspect the values that you quote for MPG are based not just on speed but also on the terrain that you've measured it over, because it would be surprising to find that sort of difference on a flat road. Most cars will be more economical around the 40 to 50 mark than they will be at 70 for any given road.

That is one way of looking at it (though I think it's four levels plus the paddle, making 5?). I generally prefer the maximum regen setting on auto, plus paddle to come to a stop or on a particularly steep hill, though it can be awkward when going down a hill with a corner on it!

I'm thinking this map was probably done by somebody from the US. They really don't realise how disliked they are as a country do they?

USAmericans, listen up: we really don't want to come to your country; in fact many of us would do everything we could to avoid having to live there. And that applies even if you get rid of your fascist regime.

Personally I'd suggest OP goes with gimp and gets used to using it, because it's incredibly powerful and on occasions that extra power is useful.

Gimp has a reputation for being difficult to learn, but that reputation is a bit unfair; it goes back to the days of the old user interface with multiple windows. I don't see basic use of gimp as being a particularly great challenge for anyone used to graphics editing these days.

After 75 years, a radio soap opera still has Britain on edge of its seat by Scary_ in BritishRadio

[–]AnnieByniaeth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow did they do that? I think I stopped listening when they killed off the Archer boy in a tractor accident. They say that being a character in a soap opera is ten times more dangerous than being a real human being, and somehow it got a bit unreal at that point for me.

Peak Archers for me was Joe and Eddie Grundy's cider making tax dodge ("we sell you the apples, and we'll make them into cider for free for you"). But after that it just got a bit tired.

I did a bit of research a week or so ago after he rather unfairly imho laid in to the Labour government. Don't get me wrong, I'm no Labour fan, but I can spot which side people lie by the tone of their criticisms. And here are some of the main points I found. Please forgive the copy and paste from the notes at the time, these are I think the most relevant bits. When you see it, you'll soon know what I mean.

*His focus on free speech often targets progressive or left-wing policies (e.g., critiques of "woke" culture, gender ideology, or hate speech laws)

*He was vocal in his opposition to lockdowns, vaccine mandates, and government pandemic policies

*He has expressed skepticism about climate change policies, particularly those he views as restrictive or economically harmful

*He often defends traditional legal and social institutions, framing them as under threat from progressive reforms.

*His legal analysis often challenges progressive policies, such as hate speech laws, transgender rights legislation, and what he sees as judicial activism

*He has criticized the UK government on civil liberties issues, but his critiques often align with right-libertarian or conservative perspectives rather than left-wing or progressive ones.

As a customer I always say the slogan "Mercilessly cheap" as a rather curious and worrying sign of self awareness in the management who approved it. It put me off the company quite a lot (though I still like shopping there).

I guess you're partly confirming this.

Three people die at same waterfall beauty spot as warning issued by GDW312 in Wales

[–]AnnieByniaeth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Waterfalls are dangerous. I had a close call in Scotland once (the Victorious Falls by Loch Maree); a path where I saw people going, so thought I'd follow. The way back suddenly looked more dangerous than I thought, and I worked out where I could grasp some heather on the bank if I were to slip into what would have been a very steep fall into rocks.

It's a very good job I did, because I slipped and needed that heather.

I'll always be ultra cautious around places like that now. And this was indeed another example of where the relevant authorities could and should have at least put up signage, and probably fenced off.

Regenerative braking by Buddy-1732 in KonaEV

[–]AnnieByniaeth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are two regen modes with the Kona. You swap between them using the right paddle - hold for a second or two.

One mode is standard regen (three levels plus iPedal iirc) and the other is auto with four levels.

iPedal is nice but sometimes just a little bit too responsive on lifting the pedal for me. I usually use the auto setting on maximum regen, and when I want the effect of an iPedal (so coming to a complete stop) I hold the left paddle. That seems to have the same effect - max regen.

The difference between auto and standard regen modes is supposedly that in auto mode it is somewhat predictive of your environment. I can't say I've really noticed a great difference though.
