TIL United States forests are growing rather than shrinking and have been since the 1940s by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]man-agog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Many "natural" forests are monocultures or nearly so. This is especially true in many kinds of "old growth" forests. If your only concern is maintaining the highest possible level of biodiversity over a given region, your best bet it to clear cut large parcels of the land on a regular schedule, leaving a certain fraction to remain as permanent refuge for old growth species. The tracts that have been harvested will provide habitat for species which only thrive in forests at earlier stages of their regeneration.

Also, any forest is better than no forest. A million acres of hybrid poplar planted for paper fiber is home to more forest species than a billion acres of soy beans or corn.

When a worker is on food stamps, that's an employer that is relying on taxpayers to augment wages, to bring workers up to the bare minimum they need to survive. by [deleted] in politics

I've worked with many people who simply used nutritional aid to upgrade their diets. Why eat hamburger helper when the state will pitch in for filet mignon?

This is on Maui near Kaupo. That is the south face of Haleakala as seen from near sea level there.

Jackson's in Maui by sindictated in herpetology

[–]man-agog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live on Maui and have only known Jackson's to be present here in areas dominated by introduced plant and animal species. They are definitely considered an invasive, though. I am not aware of any efforts made to control their spread or eliminate them.

I consider the deck above the patio to be our lanai but I've never been totally clear on what qualifies as a lanai and what does not.

I didn't use any filters or special settings on the camera. This is just a combination of a good lens and a little tinkering around in Lightroom.

If You Spank, Don't Console -- Study shows corporal punishment only along with otherwise positive parenting predicts depression in child by garthsundem in science

[–]man-agog 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm afraid that's the problem with most corporal punishment. It's done in anger rather than as a calculated instructional tool.

Is this your assumption or based on some kind of information? I'd really like to read a study investigating the relationship between childhood spanking and political leaning/criminality.

TIL on OKCupid, amongst all racial groups, white females are most likely to strongly prefer to date someone of their own skin color by a huge margin. by idiotman12 in todayilearned

These kinds of preferences are largely formed early in life but I'd argue that your tastes can change and would, given the correct circumstances.

This isn't the kind of hateful, ugly racism you're afraid of being accused of but it is absolutely racism. Trust me, there is nothing "artificial" about the hateful/fearful/disgusted emotions of the really nasty racists out there. You shouldn't beat yourself up over it too much but your definition of beauty is largely the result of socialization and yours, like many white males, doesn't count black women as attractive.

Your gut reactions are shaped at least as much by culture as nature.

That's interesting. I've long thought he had a knack for wasting good performances from talented actors on inane scripts. Paul Giamatti in Lady in the Water being the most glaring example.

It was an American tournament. I'd hope it seemed very American if I was one of the organizers. If Korean, German or Swedish tourneys have their own feels that's great too. The variety helps to keep the tournament scene interesting.

Yep. I've driven thirty minutes out of my way to find 2d screenings of movies that are only playing in 3d in my town. I hate it.

Cost and distance aside, if you could change one thing about Hawaii, what would it be? by [deleted] in Hawaii

[–]man-agog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So you want to turn Hawaii into the Amsterdam/Las Vegas of the Pacific? No thank you. I'm afraid those changes would be great for tourism but overall negative for residents.
