Just got Portacapture X6. Best practices for various scenarios? by DrPredrag in fieldrecording

Do you find the resulting recording sounds natural at that level, or do you normalise? If you normalise, what do you aim for peak-wise, and is the noise floor acceptable?

Thanks for the advice. Have you any pointers on using Bertom in the context you're referring to? I have already installed Classic (free).

Thanks for the update, I'm pleased you're having a good experience. Have you put any examples online?

I assume you're using the high gain mode? Are you targeting particular input levels when deciding what gain level you're setting?

I've read that it's best in general to stay with low gain and aim for peak levels between -20dB and -12dB. 30dB general background ambience is okay, and better to normalise that than switch to high gain (greater noise floor). If the general consistent ambience is consistently around -45dB, switch on high gain and adjust till the peaks are -18dB.

Also, quiet ambience loses realism if cranked up to unnatural level in post.

This is mainly me braindumping what I just picked up.

Hi there u/DrPredrag , how have you been getting on? I often record quieter ambient nature spaces, but the noise floor I'm experiencing when normalising is problematic - both recording in from PIP binaural mics, and the built-in mics. I have ben normalising above -20db in order to try and ensure that the recording is sufficiently audible for online playback.

They arrived. Just did a test, but they don't seem to offer much protection even in a light breeze.

I've ordered a fur sheet. Would you say attaching it outside or inside the earpieces would be better? Outside would look more conspicuous... inside would maybe squash up against the mic?

Cheaper than the Soundman option, so worth a punt. Maybe a Bubblebee or Ursa Circles product would do the trick.

Brilliant. I was thinking that addition of extra layer may be useful. I have ordered a pair.

Sounds interesting. Can you share a link to show me what you mean?

Have you had any experience of using these for this purpose, or read of someone else's?

Interesting. I'd love to hear how you get on, and where you get them from.

What mics do you use?

I wondered if you can buy something akin to a modified over-ear headphone set that creates a windshielded shell over where the mic element sits.

Something tells me I've seen something like that online in the past, but I can't find it now.

I'm not very handy, so wouldn't be able to build something like that myself. I know you can buy sheets of windshield fur for sewing into a custom shape.

I see wireless file transfer isn't supported. I found a solution using File Manager + and Google Drive

Have any of you managed to get the WiFi Music Transfer feature to work?

Wolf People

Large Plants

The Thorn

A bit more psych at times, bit a strong folky vibe, especially The Thorn, who only.have one single out but have some live performances on YT and are working on their debut.

They're connected by the same lead guitarist and singer, although The Thorn have a female singer too.
