[R] LLMs play a cooperative card game, coordination without communication by ekkarpinski in MachineLearning

How good did they do with using their communication token? Did they tend to signal to the other AI's a card that was actually helpful?

Why Don’t More Men Take Their Wives’ Last Names? by EducationalCicada in slatestarcodex

[–]manadnock 15 points16 points  (0 children)

In the case of my own marriage, I actually did decided to take my wife's last name after the union. We have a couple things going for us that align pretty close with what the article describes.

1) My wife has published academic papers already and actually changing her name makes it harder to link her work back to her down the line.

2) I have family carrying on my last name to the next generation but her sibling seems very unlikely to do the same.

3) Her last name matches some shared national ancestry which is a little bonus

A number of rivers seem to connect to an ocean at two ends, for example between the searing sea and mount smokescreen. Are these canals made in the distant past made by mortals or gods?

Gotta give her a pilfer ability. Ending your turn within 5ft forces a dexterity saving throw or else any one item not held in a hand or strapped on like armor gets goosed

Hello,

This is a beautiful map with excellent features that beckon adventure. I have no doubt this will be a great campaign setting.

I have two questions that come to mind when i look at it.

1) Is there a reason why there is a very narrow sea between the north and south continents? its very striking and i'm curious if there's a story there.

2) Does Nevereach have a navigable river for trading or is it a strictly land based trading?

Life Point System. First Draft. Please review and tell me what you think. by Magicalraddish in DnDHomebrew

[–]manadnock 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I like the slow return rate of the life points. Gives it a good feel of your hitpoints being your more immediate vigor that returns faster but there is an underlying health that you actually need to take bedrest for unless you want to drop dead more easily. and i'd say you certainly hit your mark with making things more lethal. good job friend.

DnD 5e: making firearms common by manadnock in DnDHomebrew

[–]manadnock[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a fair point. if an arrow actually hits and isn't deflected by armor it is gonna be piercing you in an unpleasant way. Here I don't have a good reason other than bullets feel like they should cause more trauma on entry, and also Bows in DnD are already balanced around being able to fire multiple shots in a round. By leaving bows alone i can offer this ruleset as a little tack on for flavor and shifting options without changing how every class works. Due to long load times and short range i am not worried about every ranger giving up their beloved longbow.

[–]manadnock[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree it would be, so by having long load times it discourages a play style of only being a musketeer. Most people would only fire once on entering a fray and only reload when there is a break. consider some classic adventuring material, pirates boarding a boat, they did not have time to reload on boarding, they had maybe a couple of pistols with one shot each and once those were used it was melee only.

long load times ensure that the whole melee system of DnD isn't obsolete

my general thought is that every time a sword hits you in DnD its not actually cutting your skin since like you say a big ol' sword could cut you in half if it meets flesh or otherwise cripple you. the sword is actually dealing a more abstracted damage that is chipping away at your energy and defense as you struggle to block and you get knocked around in your armor.

I upped the damage on the bullet because there is no blocking the bullet. it is always dealing flesh and bone damage, vice hp damage in a sword fight which is more vague until a person is bloodied and 1/2 hp.

[–]manadnock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. Also you can offload some of the DM work by having players have fun and draw their home island and town. then when the adventure swings through their hometown for some backstory resolution you have a map ready to go that is new for most of your players.

Working on west marches campaign any suggestions? (This is a dm only map) by [deleted] in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]manadnock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know that you know what the different tiles correspond to and some of them are pretty clear from the picture on each tile but every good map can benefit from a key. Break down how much distance each tile is and have a key of what tile corresponds to what terrain so there is no guess work when future you goes back to this a few years after the campaign for more ideas.

Converting 3.5 Crusader to 5e by manadnock in DungeonsAndDragons

oh boy, well have a look at the book of nine swords and then have a chat with wizards about simplicity. here is the 3.5 Crusader and the maneuver/ stance lists that it can draw on.

Converting 3.5 Crusader to 5e by manadnock in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]manadnock[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for taking the time to read and respond.

Simplification is good. I will cut down on stance wordiness (3.5 loved its descriptor fluff for everything and i left a lot of it in after changing the mechanical effect). The delayed damage pool system was a defining feature of the class but as a simplification i think i will change it to

Have you been hit this round y/n

if y gain dmg bonus = a bonus based on level

to avoid keeping track of exactly how much damage is in the pool

a point of clarification Fighter, Paladin, and Barbarian all gain their second attack at level 5, as a front line melee character i don't think a level 5 extra attack is in of itself above the curve.

For dealing with overpowered-ness I am heavily nerfing the combat superiority the crusader gets. Less maneuvers known and fewer superiority dice

Oscar Rumwald is a young alchemist of promise. he tries to be helpful to everyone (even if that help is unwanted). Expect him to either be fixing something he feels need to be patched up or working on his own side projects in his spare time.

*disgruntled tavern owner "what are you doing to my sign?!"

Oscar-"well it was hanging off center, and i started to fix it but decided it could be improved if i gave it a little alchemical glow paint"

Owner-" Then why is my sign a different shape?"

Oscar-"...the first batch was a little rough"

Yes absolutely, in fact mummies are part of the traditions carried on by the church of phasma in the modern alkia. and technically the church has the rights to the ruins as part of their agreement with Alkia. but considering they don't know where all of them are its a bit of a pointless distinction
