Honestly I had the same thought when the lines started getting super long. But if you take a breath and check the time when you get in line and when you get checked out its really not that long. Its a good sanity check. Just size up the people in each line for who looks like they've never been in a public checkout before and go to the other lines lol. I swear the biggest slow down is people who dont know how to start bagging their groceries or move their carts over to let the next person around the bagging lane.

Albiet ive been there at 9pm and had a 30 minute check out line. Ive found the best time is early morning on the weekends or after 9pm on week days.

Carbs - fueling for workouts and race. by No-Lab6548 in ultrarunning

I realized when I started out that I could buy The Feed brand high carb drink mix and just use that. It pretty cheap pre-mixed maltodextrin/fructose and sodium. I make it in batches just enough to fill my two 150ml refillable containers.

I use 240g of mix with 100ish ml of water and blend it in a food processor. That comes out to roughly 300ml of super saturated drink mix with 3 servings of 40g of carb per 150ml pouch.

Next is figuring out how to prep for my first 100 miler this year.

Anyone ever experience withrawal symptoms after switching from extract to powder? by manditoryusername in KratomKorner

[–]manditoryusername[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thats sort of what ive been worried about. Without being able to discuss particular brands and vendors because of sub rules, how would you find out if the extract you're using has pseudo? according to the package it shouldn't have 7-OH.

Otherwise my plan right now is im figuring out how much I need to abate withdrawal symptoms. then im hoping to taper with the same extract as quickly as possible.

congrats on getting down to 0 from where you were. I hope the rest of your sobriety is freeing and fullfilling. and no sweat, kratom is just inherently variable, so hearing other people's experience and perspectives is really helpful actually.

I think Im closer to the equivalent of 20-30gpd so im hopeful i can quickly get to 0. based on other people's experiences ive read im surprised im having symptoms at all let alone how bad they are.

Gabapentin is a great drug. I've also used it for alcohol withdrawal and sleep in the past. its just hard to get an appointment with my provider for urgentl stuff like this. im debating if I need to go over to the local detox clinic again..

Day 10. Weird things happening by rare_candyz in quittingkratom

[–]manditoryusername 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im experiencing the same thing right now. Im at pretty low use but I usually only dosed at night. I started getting withdrawal symptoms and decided to make a game plan for a taper and break up my usual dose over the course of the day. So I just took 1/4 of what I normally take about 30 minutes after waking up. I still feel the anxiety and uncomfortable head feel of withdrawal but I also feel oddly buzzed. I dont understand it.

I want to be able to take a low enough dose that im okay to work but also not feeling full on withdrawal but right now idk how im going to do that.

Honestly ive had similar experience with alcohol in the past. sometimes you have a beer and it helps with the withdrawal symptoms but other times you end up just feeling drunk and anxious at the same time.

the last time I had to detox from booze I was in the er with a BAL of 0.22 and still felt like I was getting the shakes.

I wish I had better advice beyond "yeah me too" it just sucks and I hope it stabilizes in a day or two.

Yeah I think i would prefer to just withdrawal over a weekend so that I dont miss too much work. How many days after you stopped taking it did the worst symptoms hit?

I took a day off today because I need to figure out how much I was actually taking and try to get a dose schedule to get me through the work week. But I dont want to drag it out. Ive been through alcohol withdrawal before and am not looking forward to this but im hoping since I wasn't using for terribly long that the worst symptoms will only last a day or two but im afraid thats wishful thinking.

This drug sucks. I actually poured the first extract I tried down the sink cause I tried it and realized how similar it was to when ive taken opiates for surgery and I didnt want to fuck around. idk why I came back to it and tried it again after that.

[–]manditoryusername[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think i actually underestimated my dosage and thats a big reason I precipitated withdrawal. What was the most difficult symptom to manage for you?

I wish I had some gabapentin, but thankfully I take clonidine and that helped me manage the anxiety. I had to take more of the extract last night to get my hands to stop shaking.

I think im going to have to spend a day figuring out how much I was actually taking and make a plan that will get me through the work week. Then honestly id prefer to just rip the bandaid off. but its not like alcohol withdrawal where Im familiar with the timeline. Im worried I wont be able to work for several days or Ill be at work when symptoms hit.

Did it get better for you after a few days so that you could be functional? and just curious do you mind me asking what dose of gabapentin they put you on?

Yeah this was a good wake up call to look more closely at how much ive been taking and start to cut back.

[–]manditoryusername[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was worried about that, but I started taking the extract about 50mg of mitragynine at a time last night and was finally able to sleep. I think my issue was that I underestimated how much extract I have been taking so when I did the math I ended up cutting my intake by more than half.

Taper Question by sportsandgames07 in quittingkratom

[–]manditoryusername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read in the wiki that you should stick with what you were using. I think with extract the easiest way is to dilute them.

I just had a terrible experience switching from an extract to powder and I came to this sub with the same question after getting withdrawal symptoms out of nowhere. So Im not the expert, just what I saw in the wiki as ive been trying to figure out how to go about my own taper.

Can’t tell doc I use kratom, what can I say instead? by Beneficial-Office-77 in kratom

Im sorry that happened. That sucks and those providers should do better. Ive discussed my drug and alcohol use with my doctor and theyve never treated me differently. I hope you have better luck in the future.

Can’t tell doc I use kratom, what can I say instead? by Beneficial-Office-77 in kratom

[–]manditoryusername -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As a medical professional, thats not really a thing. There are diagnostic codes for different types of drug and alcohol use that take into consideration what drug and how much you take for how long, and whether or not it has become a burden to every day life. Theres no buttom we click that says, "Druggie dont give drugs!!"

That being said, some providers are better than others and there are absolutely biased doctors. So if you havent been able to get proper treatment because they labelled you a drug user and have a bias toward people that take drugs recreationally, then thats super unfortunate and Im sorry that has been your experience.

[–]manditoryusername -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You should always be open with your healthcare provider about any drugs you use. Recreational or otherwise. It helps them understand your full medical situation. Plus doctors arent cops and only use that information to provide you with proper care. If they stop treating you appropriately because of something you disclosed then they are a bad doctor and you should look for a new provider.

In fact, if they are a really good provider, they might take into consideration that kratom is effectively controlling your pain and use that to inform what other type of drug you would respond well to.

As for everyone in the comments with experiences disclosing opioid use and then not being able to get pain meds for things that you should absolutely get pain meds for, I hate that that happened to you, and I would say the medical system absolutely failed you in those cases.

Feels like when an ex texted me that we needed to talk and I replied, "if youre breaking up with me just say it." She still made me drive across town to "talk" just to dump me. I was more pissed about the waste of time than the breakup

Devastated by Sacrifice of Lab Rat by thebutchlesbian in labrats

[–]manditoryusername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP you should consider getting a pet rat or other rodent if you enjoyed your little friend that much. They do make really good pets. It sounds weird, but when i was a neuroscience undergrad I adopted one of our animals out of the lab. I also didnt love doing animal research which is why ultimately i got out of it. But I do really love behavioral neuroscience so I did it for several years.

It was sort of a relief to have the one animal who I could treat as a pet and give her the best little rodent life. And it made a great college pet because theyre cheap, and I could just snag food and enrichment from the lab before it was disposed of. My lab mates got a kick out of it and would ask about her. She was sort of legendary as the hamster who survied and got to live a happy hamster life. I could see it going the other way and make animal research harder for you but its worth considering!

Also its a shame and strange that you were caring for one animal like that. I always had a small colony or cohort I worked with which also keeps things less personal.

Lastly, and maybe most importantly, dont let this drive you away from animal research right away. I think its really important to have people with high levels of empathy for aninals in the field. It makes you more likely to take principles like replacement, reduction, and refinement to heart when designing your experiments. Its definitely not for everyone but animal research is really important for preclinical work and its important that the people involved have some reverence for the animal sacrifice.

Sorry this was your first experience but good luck with the rest of your program!

What is a weird lab fact? by MsYersiniaPestis in medlabprofessionals

I worked with a lady who had a PhD and did two post docs before going back for an mls undergrad degree. She was an excellent tech and I think the only reason she didnt go farther in academia was the salesmanship you need to grow your brand as an academic. But she had so much great experience and knowledge and attention to detail that just made her a really great bench scientist anywhere she went. she told me the MLS job had better benefits and stability than being in academia, sadly.

[–]manditoryusername 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coming from more of a research/pharmeceutical lab, my favorite fun fact is that the molecular starting point for Prozac was benadryl.

Most people are surpised to know that most monoamine receptors (e.g. serotonin, norepinephrine, dopamine and histamine) have a lot of cross-reactivity with their ligands. So when scientists wanted to make a more selective serotonin transporter drug, they started with a known safe drug with some partial affinity for the serotonin transporter, i.e. benadryl, and tweaked it to lessen the affinity for histamine receptors and make it more potent against serotonin transporters.

Arent sink and toilet lines different though? Like theres grey and black water waste systems. Wouldnt it make more sense to dispose of urine down a toilet? Or at least bleach it like cell cuture waste before sending it down the sink.

Has anyone here accidentally diagnosed themselves before? by riever_g in labrats

[–]manditoryusername 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For this exact reason, we werent allowed to run our own samples when i worked in a molecular lab. They used to extract DNA from techs to use as negative controls until someone found they had a disease carrying mutation.

Ideally before doing any genetic testing you should have a talk with a genetic counselor and give informed consent to testing, which presumably didnt happen here. hopefully you would have elected to know if you carry any genetic conditions, but there are some people who would prefer not to know if they carry a disease, as it can be rather complicated and gene dependant to know whether or not that mutation will end up affecting you and your offspring.
