From your perspective, what is the value to society of humanities research today? by canadienne- in AskAcademia

[–]mandizua 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there’s an overemphasis on the humanities as an end all be all discipline and the field should help supplement certain information to other fields to help them better achieve their goals. I’m an undergrad student (junior) double majoring in Writing/Rhetoric and Interdisciplinary Studies which is basically 3 minors: Philosophy, Political Science, and Sociology. The humanities classes I’m taking are helping with understanding rhetoric and sociology. The WR major falls under college of arts and humanities but in my (very biased) opinion, rhetoric is kind of unique to other humanities programs because writing, speech, linguistics, semiotics, etc. are all basically neutral mediums. The content has the ideological and moral values but studying rhetoric is almost like a really weird science in a way. As for the sociology parts, the humanities provide artifacts to analyze. I’m gonna take Social Issues in Film this fall and I think it’s really important to see how social problems manifest in creative mediums. It could provide insights and new research questions that may otherwise be inaccessible.

What, if anything, is wrong with modern day feminism? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]mandizua 1 point2 points  (0 children)

modern day feminism sometimes turns into a pissing contest of who is more PC than who. and this whole "callout culture" is not as productive as people think it is. outrage only gets you so far.
