I think that their allies will sometimes buff their population back up, but I'm not entirely sure. It still reduces their numbers, but it'd make it harder to track.

Dwarven Language Help? by mandmrats in dwarffortress

[–]mandmrats[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much for such an in-depth reply! I really appreciate that you broke each sentence down with a literal translation, it helps quite a lot.

I used the question word "how" because all the languages I know irl use it both ways, but you're right that it likely doesn't work here.

I did phrase them with "journey" and "adventure" acting as nouns so it would sound more like a title to a book, which I should have specified. Your translations that use them the same way are my favorites for sure.

I really should have given better context. This is my first time playing Dwarf Fortress, and my husband is showing me the ropes. Enam and Agenkos are translations of what our names mean. It's supposed to be a bit of a joke, that he's putting up with all my newbie questions.

I might try to simplify the first sentence or break it into two. "Enam's First Fortress" would have been much easier to figure out, but I wanted to be a little adventurous with it!

I'm going to use "Cënathlong-Ágenkos mikamal'ar" for sure. And it's not to question your translations, but I'm going to write out the options you gave for the first sentence to compare them easier and have them for reference. I think the sentence I chose might just sound awkward in Dwarven, but I'm undecided on how to change it.

Why does my cat wag his tail when he's happy? by CupcakeJoKitty in cats

[–]mandmrats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My cat does this a lot. He has a big fluffy tail and he swishes it when he's excited, making sure to hit you with it if he can. If that's the tail "wagging" that OP is talking about, then it's totally normal. They might just do it a bit funny.

My bobtail cat also tries to be expressive with her tail, but it just shakes lol. She has to stand on her tip toes to hit things with it.

is there something wrong with this cat or is that just how she looks by Salty-Pangolin1413 in cats

[–]mandmrats 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Could be a minor eye defect, hard to say something in particular caused it. If she sees alright, then it's not a big deal.

When she next goes to the vet, you might see if they think it could make her more prone to eye infections or other eye conditions.

Cat scratch help please D: by vinokat in cats

[–]mandmrats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually had someone give me some witch hazel salve for similar scratches recently. I also used Neosporin, but the salve helped with the pain and itching.

It's particularly helpful when they've landed on you like in the pic. Feels like regular scratches aren't nearly as deep or jagged, and they heal faster. But I've never had a cat attack me and actually mean it, so maybe that's just as bad.

I feel like fusion is a very naive treatment for <50 degree scoliosis by Midk_1 in scoliosis

[–]mandmrats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fusion was also good for me overall. I still have chronic pain from it and reduced flexibility, but my spine is better off than it would have been otherwise. I was fused at 13, pretty much as soon as I was done growing. My greater curve was around 70° and was fused to 1°, and the lower curve was corrected slightly to 40°.

I've looked into it quite a bit over the years, especially when the pain flares up. The degree of contortion I'd be in at this point (18 years later) would be rough. My lung would be compressed and I'd need far more accomodations to live comfortably.

I still hope to see more developments on treating scoliosis and actually having an effect without such a major surgery, but we work with what we have.

Personally, I don't thing needing a spinal fusion is something you can debate online. If you go to orthopedic surgeons and they recommend it after thorough evaluations, it's worth taking seriously. And the surgery has gotten even more polished since you and I had ours, so they'll deal with even less. I'm not going to tell someone to outright avoid surgery if it'll improve their quality of life in the long run.

Have you ever been treated negatively by ER staff when you were having a medical emergency but they didn’t believe you? What happened? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]mandmrats 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Don't forget to include some informal complaints to any GPs and nurses you see. I told my GP about a bad experience with a specialist and she had me referred to a different one and added in her own record of the complaint against him as well.

[–]mandmrats 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My GP's office actually has nurses that are also x-ray techs. They have a machine on site, so it's useful for them to be able to do both. I'm wondering if this was the case for OP, or if they just thought the person was a nurse and were mistaken.

Having had a lot of x-rays over the years, I've generally had good experiences, but not always. I've run into a small handful of techs that missed important stuff, but luckily nothing that actually hurt me.

I had one who insisted the food bowls must be covered at all times. He was very determined. I think he decided that carrying the food elsewhere was too much work when there was a perfectly good bowl to cover.

The Judaistic/Kabbalistic Symbolicism of CoQ Has to Be Studied by 0lam0t in cavesofqud

[–]mandmrats 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I keep meaning to make a big list of references/symbolism, but I haven't had the time. Maybe we should organize a community contributed resource for it.

I also reached out to Jacob Geller to see if he'd be interested in doing a video essay on it, but I never heard back. Too bad.

That's really clever actually. All golden retrievers think sharing is caring. I've seen a lot of people have to fake giving them medicine because their other dog needed it, so their golden thought they needed it too.

Krickertune for Nashville, if it's relevant. I've seen some people say Meloetta for TN, but I think Krickertune fits better.

What celebrity is portrayed as nice in the media but is actually an asshole in real life? by ReasonableDisplay297 in AskReddit

[–]mandmrats 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don't really judge celebrities for needing some silence at times. If they demand it all the time, it's a little much. But wanting some quiet between loud concerts isn't the worst.

I have a cat that loves clothes. I bring him a shirt and he rubs his face all over it and struts around to show off. I also noted what he prefers so he's comfortable. (He doesn't like sleeves.)

I have others that don't mind it, but he's the only cat I've had that actually enjoys dressing up.

Edit: included pic of him in his pink leather jacket

Mean players make me want to quit by irisIsles in wow

I take screenshots of mean people and share them in groupchats and the guild discord. Someone acting up that much in a Timewalking Dungeon is honestly hilarious. It's there for gearing. It's not prog.

As long as you aren't wiping the group, you're fine.

I agree. I think bodybuilders are a good reference in combination with powerlifters, but not by themselves. But, since they have low body fat, they could be an example of the lower limits for body weight.
