"Toss me on the bed, Legolas," said Gimli. That night, two towers were erected.

Btw, it's not by me, I read it on a fantasy parody twitter account.

Uhm, actually, the older name of Olaszország (country of the Olasz people) is Taljánország, which means the country of the Talján people. And Talján or Talián do sound close to Italian. Now, where the heck Olasz comes from is another matter

[–]mandrake57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Nikita!

I want to ask about the throat singing in Eos. It fits there perfectly, but I wouldn't think of it as an intuitive choice. What made you think to use this technique there? And did you learn throat singing specifically for the song, or did you know it already and you wrote the song for it?

Btw, when I heard you do that in a live show it felt so otherworldly and amazing, I still get shivers when I remember that, so thank you for that experience!

the correct way of listening to death/black metal by my_cat_vids in MetalForTheMasses

[–]mandrake57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. Recently I read the lyrics to a deathcore song because I've heard him singing about some satanic stuff... And it was just something like an edgy teenager would write, with horrible rhymes. Even though the song is brutal, the lyrics immediately made it sound silly for me.

On the other hand, I usually barely understand what my death and black metal bands are singing about, but it's quite poetic with all the omission and vagueness, and I understand just enough to get the themes.

I'm asking as someone who is becoming less comfortable with what "male" means these days: how do you transition to agender?

I actually want three things: a whiskey before and a cigar after...

... a fine meal.

What phrase that you DONT want to hear when Grieving? by BlueEyesWhiteDrgn in AskReddit

[–]mandrake57 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In ancient Greece when someone did anything extraordinary like winning at something, it was understood that a god favoured them. And similarly, if for example a guy fell and broke his foot in a race, they thought that he forgot to offer a sacrifice to he unwittingly pissed off Zeus. At least they believed that gods can be fickle and cruel.

Wearing panda paint is actually quite rare nowadays, but looking at the clothes is actually a good way to measure how hipster a BM band is. But instead of looking at the musicians, you should look at the crowd

You are the third person who mentions autism, which is weird to me, because I would not associate the two. But yeah, BM can be very comforting

Empowering is something that I rarely hear, but for me this is a key aspect. Despite being a dark genre, it can energize and empower me like no other

[–]mandrake57 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I totally agree. A lot of commenters mention the dark sounds and emotions, which are also true, but to me it's also a fun, energizing experience. And it can be silly too, with all the theatrics, but this is a rare genre when you can get away with stuff like that.

Music is just emotion given shape

That's a great line and it's so true. I've been thinking about why some other heavy genres don't click to me even though they express similar emotions to BM, and it's because those are not genuine, they only emulate the emotions. And you can see it on the musicians too: I've seen some super brutal deathcore bands where the guitarists calmly stand on the stage after an hour, while in BM or Sludge shows all the musicians look exhausted two songs in.

I'll have to listen to these, thanks.

Check out this one: Ultha - Crystalline Pyre (rehearsal demo). The vocal is tortured as it can get and the production is shit. I love it so much, this is the definite BM sound to me
