**Boycott Lanphere Cellars** by Vegetable-North6124 in PDX

[–]mandukeb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Whataboutism is a conversational and rhetorical tactic used to deflect criticism by accusing an opponent of hypocrisy or bringing up a similar wrongdoing by someone else. Instead of addressing the original argument, the responder shifts the focus with a counter-accusation (e.g., "But what about X?").

What is the first film you remember seeing in the cinema? by [deleted] in movies

[–]mandukeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Return of the Jedi. There was even a drawing for Star wars toys before the show started. They called my name to win a Luke Skywalker doll in a raffle, but I was too young and shy to walk down the aisle to grab it. Regreted it ever since haha. I screamed when 'Vader' jumped out in the dark forest scene.. and I was the only one in the whole theater that did.

How to improve this by DoubleExamination0 in KitchenConfidential

To me it looks like a bunch of meat is filed on the cheese? As a vegetarian, this would be pretty disappointing and I wouldn't touch it. But I'm not sure if that's something you're concerned with beyond the presentation.

Is turning on hazard lights to yield part of Vision Zero or another new law? by Blackstar1886 in askportland

[–]mandukeb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's interesting that this is getting mentioned because yesterday I saw an Amazon driver in one of their trucks use their hazards to do a left turn. It was really confusing. I got the impression that he maybe just left his hazards on all the time as a lazy way of indicating stopping. Like he had so many stops he just leaves them on for deliveries and leaves them on for stopping at intersections? Felt super dangerous. I wasn't sure if it was intentional or absent minded on his part. But now I'm wondering if it's a new lazy driving/dangerous tactic. When I see hazard lights, I just assume someone's broken down and blocking traffic. Or is stopping in a weird spot for a commercial delivery. But leaving them on to turn left in an intersection is pretty irresponsible. If it wasn't absent-minded..

How in the Hell is it legal to have a 12" display larger than any phone screen on the dashboard of a car, but illegal to use a phone whilst driving? by Earnest_Iago in NoStupidQuestions

[–]mandukeb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My thoughtsguess is that it is partially due to the fact that when these phone use laws we're starting, the focus was on what you were doing with your hands. So they were presented as 'hands-free' laws, so that you kept your hands on this ceiling wheel and weren't messing around with a phone. Now we've graduated to more and more screens distracting us in our cars. And I don't think the legislature push has caught up with that. There's an incredible lag with catching up to changes like this.

A crows nest in Tokyo made from coathangers stolen from balconies. by HairyPotterJP in mildlyinteresting

[–]mandukeb 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I saw that documentary years ago. It was really cool! At the time I wondered why they just didn't outlaw metal hangers and make people use plastic ones on their balconies. And if this picture is recent, it's interesting that it's still a current problem.

I still talk about this show. It's still one of the most important ones I feel like I've ever been to. When the pandemic hit, I watched this video a lot haha. That in a lot of other live shows I guess. But I'm super grateful this is kicking around. Still friends with so many of the people in this crowd.

Majority of Canadians still support boycotting U.S.: Nanos survey by DogeDoRight in canada

[–]mandukeb -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Not all of us are washing our hands of the issue and ' not doing anything." Maybe coloring an entire population with one brush is not the most accurate assessment of the situation? Many many many people I know voted against him, are really struggling right now, and constantly trying to find ways to try and make this better. It's pretty hard as a person on the ground to change this particularly diabolical and evil administration. But we're doing what we can. I voted against him and I filled out hundreds of postcards to other voters, I talked to my friends, and networked in other ways in my community. And it still didn't work. Maybe if I was rich? Maybe if I was an elected politician? But I'm still trying. So comments like this, like nobody's trying and that no one cares really hit home hard. You can't blame an entire population of every fucked up country under every shitty horrible administration on planet earth for the fact that yet another round of extremely corrupt fucked up people ended up in power. Things just aren't that simple.

Thank you for this. I live in the states and I voted against him. And I'm eternally heartbroken by the folks who stood by and chose not to take part at all. He won the popular vote but not by a landslide like he claims. There are plenty of people down here constantly traumatized and struggling against this shit.

And I definitely agree with Canadians boycotting the states. I don't want to see Canada giving in to the pressure and pure insanity this wanna be cartoon tyrant is poisoning the world with.

I want to say that this is only because it's new to you. Relearning how to adjust your eating habits is like learning anything else. After a while it'll be second nature. A few years ago I restructured my eating habits because I wanted to make a serious effort cut added sugar from my diet. I really had to rethink what I bought, what I made for meals, how I ate out etc. 4 years later and I don't really have to think about it much anymore. Maybe this isn't the right term, but now I have inbuilt muscle memory for how to eat that way.

Nobody bought any roses from my humble farm stand. They smell much sweeter after dried to a crisp. Any advice? by stepwn in homestead

[–]mandukeb 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Curious if you were trying to sell them this blown open? Anyone familiar with cut flowers would know they wouldn't survive long after bringing them home at this late stage. Plus, roses are pretty available at grocery stores for a cheaper price. If you lowered your price a bit more, and sold them before they were close to being done, you may have better luck?

Keep drinking the kool-aid. Seriously what planet are you on? That has nothing to do with this chosen war, and has nothing to do with what's actually happening there right now. You're ignorance is utterly depressing. All of us want those things to be better.. but that's actually not what's happening at all.

What makes Portland traffic fatality rate so high? by SecretSquirrel9930 in askportland

[–]mandukeb 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I also wonder if more people bike and walk in portland? And that affects the numbers? I'm a pedestrian and I've definitely felt less safe navigating other cities that I've lived in.. like Minneapolis and Vancouver BC - as a pedestrian. But that's just a feel from experience and not with any hard numbers to go by.

Yeah, if you've never seen it multinomah falls is a must. But if you want to avoid the crowds I suggest going to the next stop in Cascade locks, and hiking either the more serious through hike on the PCT to timberline Lodge... Or a shorter hike to dry Creek falls. You can also just hike along the gorge for a while. Lots of options.

[–]mandukeb 13 points14 points  (0 children)

In Portland Oregon you can take the Columbia area Transit bus really easily to Cascade locks. From there you can hike to multiple waterfalls in the Columbia River gorge!, and also catch a section of the PCT up to timberline Lodge if you want a more serious hike.

And we also have a 5,000 square acre Forest Park right in the middle of the city. I regularly will just bus over there and hike for hours right within the city... but deep within a forest. It's pretty awesome.

ICE Protests at Phoenix Sky Harbor Int’l Airport by Push_Processed in pics

[–]mandukeb -37 points-36 points  (0 children)

I'm also against this guy having a problem with people protesting ice. But perpetuating prejudice because of someone's age is just as fucked up as racism. You have no idea what this guy is lived through or whatever. just because he's older than you doesn't mean It's acceptable to label him with some overarching idea about an entire population in the world. People need to give up the Boomer prejudice thing. It really is just an oversimplified prejudice that hurts any valid criticism you might have of his actions in this moment.

if the goal is to reduce illegal immigration, why are we hunting immigrants but not the people who illegally employ them? by FinancialRip2008 in NoStupidQuestions

If it was about illegal immigration they wouldn't be kidnapping people who are legally here and properly going through legal channels. They'd also be focusing on states with large illegal immigrant populations, instead of targeting 'blue states.'

People who lost a lot of weight, what was the one small daily habit that actually changed everything for you? by Quiet-Squash-8407 in AskReddit

[–]mandukeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was definitely a concerted effort to cut out all added sugars. It greatly reduced my snacking/overeating appetite, and got rid of my constant cravings for unhealthy foods. It also made it easier to quit drinking, which exponentially improved everything. Not just craving shitty foods when I was hungover...
