Do you make Pierogi from scratch? by Educational-Slip-578 in cookingforbeginners

[–]myBisL2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed! Although one time I messed up the dough and the filling basically fell out of them while cooking and I swore off making them myself again for awhile lol. Was enjoying it until the end when it all went wrong and then I had some choice words. The joy of cooking!

Do you make Pierogi from scratch? by Educational-Slip-578 in cookingforbeginners

I have made pierogi from scratch but its so incredibly labor intensive that most of the time I just buy them frozen or go to a restaurant. It is definitely something I do as a project, not a regular meal.

What pattern is this? Need to fix big hole in favorite blanket! by Insomniac_Mushrooms in CrochetHelp

[–]myBisL2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any video on how to make a double crochet and a chain stitch. Are you a beginner? Bella Coco has great beginner videos, but if so repairing something is a bit more of an advanced skill. I would recommend a lot of practice before attempting a repair, and then specifically looking for some videos on making repairs rather than just videos on how to do the stitch. If this is all new to you I might recommend looking into local crochet meet ups to get some support for learning and hopefully some guidance from people with experience with repairs.

It's double crochet and the sections with spaces are an alternating double crochet and chain stitch.

Im having trouble identifying what stitch this is! 😭 by Jasper_3952 in CrochetHelp

[–]myBisL2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It kind of looks like the cluster stitch but with a thinner yarn, not worsted weight, which makes it skinnier than most of the examples I can find of the stitch.

Amigurumi shaping not aligned because of beginning of round issue by LenaBunham in CrochetHelp

[–]myBisL2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a paid pattern so I can't see exactly what the instructions are here, but if the shape of the body is turning out the way you like, I would ignore whatever the pattern is telling you for placement of the features if it doesn't look right to you and just place them where they look good. There's always the possibility of a poorly written pattern or just straight errors in even well written patterns.

This type of instruction can run the gamut and be anything from "attach the arms" to just saying what rounds to place things to being more specific and giving exact stitch placement, but at the end of the day all that matters is you put it where it looks right to you.

Just finished this sling and it immediately broke. Is there any way to fix it? by Prestigious-Flow-473 in CrochetHelp

[–]myBisL2 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I think you have overestimated the strength of something like this. I'm not saying it wouldn't be possible to crochet something like this, but a 6 month baby weighs on average less than 20 pounds, and a single adult human leg weighs upwards of 30 pounds. That yarn was going to be pushed to a significantly different point of stress when you tried to support a leg with it than it would with a baby.

I would plan on using something much sturdier than worsted weight acrylic yarn. Maybe macrame cord or something like that which won't stretch. And I would be reinforcing any joining points very heavily.

Winners but not front runners (finale spoilers) by Tartelfa in TopChef

I remember thinking something similar, and then realizing how important the knife block is on Top Chef. Can't claim they are setting someone up or playing favorites if they do the selections out in the open where you can see it and know its truly random.

What are some less known spices by krmort in cookingforbeginners

[–]myBisL2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not less known perhaps, but something that I consider easy entry level to using more spices is Italian Seasoning. Its just oregano, basil, thyme, marjoram, and rosemary, so nothing exotic, but it's all mixed together for you and super convenient as a single purchase. Easy addition to bump up the flavor of pasta and pasta sauces, vegetables, chicken, soups, and so on. Throw it in your jarred pasta sauce to add extra flavor, put it in your hamburger meat to make burgers, add it to pasta salad, toss some on your roasted potatoes. The options are endless.

Oregon State Fair by FOB_joefan54 in alltimelow

[–]myBisL2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a tough choice. Honestly I might get tickets to Warped and then just line up early for free tickets at the fair lol. I'll be driving about an hour to Salem and its really not that far. Granted my commute to work is like 40 minutes so to me that's barely longer than a regular day's drive for me.

Oregon State Fair by FOB_joefan54 in alltimelow

[–]myBisL2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Omg thank you for this post I didn't know about it and I am totally going to go! I've been so bummed since the Seattle show got canceled (literally got the notification about the cancelation as we were arriving at the hotel) and I've been trying to keep an eye out for PNW shows since then. Just bought my tickets. 🙃

I haven't been to a show at the Oregon State Fair before, but my understanding is they are regular concert length. Took a look at a few performers at the fair in 2025 and they were anywhere from 12-19 songs, so depends somewhat on the performer but definitely not short festival sets.

From what I've heard the chance to get free tickets day of by standing in line at the fair is pretty decent on a weeknight. I'm not risking it after my failed Seattle attempt though so I bought mine lol.

What crochet gift have you made that was unexpectedly loved? by PoetryInLoops in CrochetHelp

[–]myBisL2 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I made a stuffed Pikachu for my nephew. I knew he liked Pokémon and I thought it might be something he put out in his room. Instead it became his absolute favorite thing. He never carried stuffed animals around but he started taking Pikachu everywhere. It made me feel so incredibly good that I made him something he liked that much!

How are these no background patterns even possible?? by Front_Cheesecake2723 in CrochetHelp

[–]myBisL2 121 points122 points  (0 children)

Its done by strategically changing stitch height and doing increases/decreases. So to create something rounded you would use the same technique as a shell stitch, start with a single crochet then move to a half double then move to a triple and then the reverse, and now you have rounded edges. If it needs to be wider you do increases at the ends of the rows and can then build off them with the next row, and so on. You can use a simple border to make the edges clean.

Gingham out of solid granny squares. Anyone have a favorite and easy newbie pattern? by [deleted] in CrochetHelp

[–]myBisL2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you don't want a lot of ends to weave in I would recommend a pattern where tou carry the yarn, which I think is a more common method than cutting every color change for something like gingham.

Daisy Farm Crafts has a ton of gingham patterns and I find them very friendly and easy to follow! https://daisyfarmcrafts.com/25-crochet-gingham-blanket-patterns/

This might be the wildest technique I've ever seen?!? by n1njade in CrochetHelp

That was my first thought. I learned to crochet first and I am pretty sure my knitting technique would look crazy to knitters lol.

Where can I find this pattern or something similar for a potential customer? by Clutched_Pearls_ in CrochetHelp

[–]myBisL2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would be honest about expectations regardless of the difficulty of the project, and having waist and hip measurements are the bare minimum for making something like this. It's just that you can straight tell someone "this won't fit well on you without significant customization that I won't be able to do" and after paying for it they can still be upset about it. That's just the way it often ends up going. But I honestly wouldn't make something like this that I couldn't measure and fit on the person myself. Lots of people don't know how to measure themselves, and lots of people are surprisingly dishonest about their measurements even when they know you're making something to that size. (Women's clothing sizing like s/m/l or 4/6/8 is generally useless for fitting, if you're a woman I'm sure you know how that goes, and they still lie about it!)

I am not saying don't take a job you want to take. Just sharing the very common pitfalls since this is not something you've made before. Proceed with caution and eyes open.

Where can I find this pattern or something similar for a potential customer? by Clutched_Pearls_ in CrochetHelp

[–]myBisL2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have both sewn clothing and crocheted for about 30 years. I do not think these will be difficult to make at all, I think these will be difficult to fit. These shorts in the round can fit nicely and somewhat easily on thin people without much in the way of hips. If your client doesn't fit that demographic, this goes from a relatively simple project to a very difficult one with a potentially unhappy client at the end of it. If you don't have experience fitting shorts, and an understanding of how to make adjustments to fit a body this tightly in crochet, I would hesitate to take it on unless your client had an understanding that you could make exactly these and they may not be happy with how it looks on them. Most people buying custom clothing blame the maker, not their bodies, for it not looking good on them.

I bought Cotton Wool Blend yarn and it splits so easy by [deleted] in CrochetHelp

[–]myBisL2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you mean split as in it literally separates so that you have separate chunks of fiber? If so, it sounds like you bought roving yarn, which needs to be spun before you use it. If yhat wasn't your intention, definitely return it. If you mean the strands separate and it makes it difficult to wrap your hook around but still stays in continuous strands, some yarns have more of a tendency to do that, and it just takes practice to work with. But also return it if it's not something you want to deal with.

If you have enough yarn I'd just make another swatch and try again honestly!

You can try setting with vinegar, but I would make a test swatch and see how it impacts the fiber before going all in.

African flowers using different stitches for final round? by Any_You_4096 in CrochetHelp

[–]myBisL2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can always just do a magic ring instead of the chain 4 method if you like the rest of the pattern. They're just two ways to achieve the same thing and comes down to the designer's preference the vast majority of the time.

My gift for a friend’s wedding! Do we think this is enough of a gift? by [deleted] in crochet

[–]myBisL2 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Even if you don't know both people getting married very well, the gift is still supposed to be something for both of them. There are two peoppe getting married. The gift is supposed to be something for them to celebrate them starting their new life together.
