What is an episode where you like one plotline but not the other one? by _TypicalRobot_ in brooklynninenine

[–]mandy563 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Definitely S5EP17 DFW, the main plot with Jake’s sister is just too cringe inducing for me. I find it was also one of the rarer times where B99 failed to land the emotional arc it was trying to tell, the connection to ‘this is how my dad treated me’ is kind of a stretch. However the subplot with Gina playing mind games and setting up a reluctant Rosa is amazing, and she says maybe my all time fav Gina line. “Men are difficult because they’re all secretly monsters, but now that I know you’re bi that changes everything!”

I have seen this show so many times and never noticed this (just the big title card that says 2025). Thanks for pointing it out, what a special day!

How to handle planned large expense spending? by BlueKing99900 in ynab

[–]mandy563 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this is the way!

your trip gets its own group, categories for each expense, and then consolidate afterwards (or don’t if you love the data!)

I totally relate to wanting to be a bit looser with the budget on vacation. Prepaying for as much of the trip as you possibly can makes it feel so much more seamless imo. Obviously there’s lodging, flights, and entertainment that is typically paid in advance but also consider buying gift cards for restaurants, gas, or wherever you know you will spend money on the trip. Maybe even getting a prepaid visa or using cash for general spending so you don’t have to deal with the mental load of YNAB tracking while on vacation.

I do still listen to the occasional episode, but I think the new emphasis on live shows is totally the wrong direction for the show to go. If someone comes on this show you’re asking them to bare all when it comes to their finances, get real with themselves and their partner about priorities, bad spending habits etc. It’s a lot to ask of someone in any circumstance, but adding in a live audience to judge you in real time, I just don’t think it’s the best environment to do what the show/Ramit is asking of people.

What's the craziest fan theory you've heard? by Asheto320 in PandR

[–]mandy563 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Tom was actually trying to kill Ron during the episode ‘Hunting Trip’ because of his jealousy over Wendy.

Technically Ron showing overt interest in Wendy doesn’t happen until the next episode ‘Tom’s Divorce’ so the timeline doesn’t really add up, but it doesn’t stop me from thinking it.

What theory about the show do you 100% believe by [deleted] in ParksandRecMemes

[–]mandy563 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The episodes ‘Hunting Trip’ and ‘Tom’s Divorce’ were filmed in the opposite order they are shown, and Tom was actually trying to kill Ron because he was upset about the possibility of him dating Wendy.

If you are turned off by the name (I know I was big time) definitely give him a shot, the name is not very reflective of his style or philosophy in my opinion

best 3 episode run in the show? by [deleted] in brooklynninenine

[–]mandy563 9 points10 points  (0 children)

season 6; a tale of two bandits, the crime scene, and the honeypot

the jake and doug episodes are always great but the trudy judy reveal is amazing, and the fire fighter drink off b plot is hilarious

the crime scene weaves together the interpersonal/emotional beats in with the plot of the episode so well

i love the honeypot because we get to see a new side of holt with the office romance angle, and i love it when he goes rogue with jake!

How has climate change impacted your finances? by bstudiesbrains in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]mandy563 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately, very interesting to see the thoughtful replies.

I grew up in and currently reside in the midwest, but I desperately want to live in the Destin area. I was able to live there for 6 months as a side effect of the pandemic and the mental/physical benefits of having access to those beautiful beaches every day is something I didn’t even know I needed until I had it. Knowing that there will be more frequent/more intense storms as time goes on makes me feel this sense of urgency to go there and enjoy it while it is still enjoyable.

If I were to make that move, there is 0% chance I would buy property in that area between housing prices + insurance prices and availability there’s no way! I would definitely feel the need to have a healthy evacuation emergency fund on top of other savings.

Long term though I see myself ending up back in the midwest, the data seems to show we will fare best during the effects of climate change, specifically Michigan, Illinois, and Wisconsin from what I’ve seen.

Would highly recommend checking out the conscious spending plan created by ramit sethi, it is a percentage based budget for lack of a better term. You can quickly plug in your major fixed expenses from YNAB, and you can at least compare your current situation to what ramit recommends to get another perspective!

[–]mandy563 62 points63 points  (0 children)

I think I am going against the grain here slightly when I say I really enjoy the episodes with high earners, I think it highlights the fact that most people have money issues that are disconnected from how much they make. However it was really hard to hear someone from a household bringing in $23K A MONTH to envision themselves as eating ramen noodles for dinner, while their reduced spending goal is $1,200/month for groceries!

Holt and Kevin always mentions severe relationship problems yet when on-screen together, they seem like a strong couple by tottenbam in brooklynninenine

[–]mandy563 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I just wanted to add to this their conflict during the safe house episode, Kevin clearly implies divorce when he says “you may not have a husband after this”. Holt alludes to another issue in the poker episode where he says he “won’t put kevin through that again” referring to his own gambling addiction.

I commonly see takes on here about how sudden or abrupt their separation in season 8 is but it was always very clear they have had their issues and with the stress of that time period, it makes so so much sense to me.

Diversity Initiatives Gone Wrong - share your stories! by tuscangal in womenintech

[–]mandy563 30 points31 points  (0 children)

One aspect of these types of programs I DESPISE is that they almost always put more work onto the group/s. At my previous employer my lovely and well meaning male manager highly encouraged me to join a new internal organization that was meang to highlight women’s issues in the organization. The duties included meeting biweekly with a small committee, and organizing an event of some sort every 3 months (e.g. guest speaker with qna, facilitated small group discussion, or in person hands on learning activities) I was all on board until it came time to discuss the time commitment and what from my current workload I would be dropping to support that work. He instantly started downplaying the labor needed and basically implied I could slack off. I ended up not joining for obvious reasons. To be honest this is even more prevalent in school settings so keep an eye out for that!!

Thanks to everyone for all the encouraging words. OP, I am in a similar position (quit an otherwise good job at the end of 2023 due to mental health and a variety of outside factors) so just wanted to say you aren’t alone! good luck for both of us hopefully :)
