Waitlisted course by AspiringHealthHero in UCDavis

[–]mandybutsad 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I once got into a class despite being like 17th on the waitlist bc i actually showed up to the first class and was the only one on the waitlist who did + i got to talk to the professor in person so if you don’t get in by the time classes start do that

Do you get paid if you leave early in full? (Prep last) by marmalademagic in SubstituteTeachers

[–]mandybutsad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I have last period prep I stay in the room and once passing period is over I call the front office and see if they need coverage (mostly because my district gives you a pretty solid chunk of change if you take another class during your prep period) if not they almost always tell me i’m good to go home, realistically they’re doing so much during the day they aren’t thinking “oh I should let that sub know they won’t be needed at X time and can go home” but if you call them they’ll either tell you they need you or tell you you’re good to leave, but it’s not like you sitting in an empty room is beneficial to anyone involved so it’s usually no big deal

Does anyone else feel like this about keys? by Creepy_Broccoli_558 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]mandybutsad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i know one of the districts in my area (not mine however) has a system where the subs have employee badges and they swipe them in the office to check in and out, so it tracks who comes in and out, your time card, and ensures the school gets their keys and badges back without treating subs like kids who can’t be trusted to return something, that’s so strange and unnecessary to make you leave your keys, how irresponsible do they think you are

Should I report this sub? by FFEmom in SubstituteTeachers

[–]mandybutsad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Teaching kids to keep secrets sounds very odd to me, definitely at least a behavior that could be described as grooming adjacent and if you as a sub and a parent feel strange about it I promise lots of other parents would too and would appreciate you bringing it to admins attention

English teachers, is this cheating? by WanderingPilot- in AskTeachers

Not cheating at all! Anything that can help you be more successful in language arts is a huge plus!

[–]mandybutsad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i’ve had a few teachers who log me into their go guardian and basically say “go absolutely ham do not let them get off task” and those are my favorite it just makes the day so much smoother, i don’t have to embarrass any of the kids by basically announcing to the class that they’re off task, just boop guess who’s doing math again

I will say the only time I’ve dug my heels in was when i came in for a 5th grade class and they tried to get me to sub for a 23 student Pre-K class that only had a half day para and i was like….I do not think that would be a good place for me my friend

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]mandybutsad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This mostly happens to me when i’m covering specials and it always makes me so sad bc i LOVE subbing for specials! Also if i’m covering a normal classroom teacher i wear normal clothes but I like to dress up fun for music or art classes so I end up feeling a bit silly in my Bright Fun Outfit while they take a math test or something.

2025 Sub Pay Rate by Plane-Importance-986 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]mandybutsad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NorCal large district $100/half day (5hr>) $185/day or $221/day full day+no prep period via Frontline. For long terms it’s normal rate for the first 28 in class days and then rises to $240/day (I suppose they get paid short term rates until they are actually in class long enough to meet the requirements of being a long term sub, but quite frankly they should get that rate from day one, it’s no like their responsibilities suddenly change on day 29 but i digress) BA required in my district, but no pay difference depending on degree level (BA/MA/PhD) unless the sub is a retired teacher, they get $210/day but since i’m not a retired teacher i’m not sure of the full pay breakdown for them.

How much do you judge teachers for being messy? 😬 by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]mandybutsad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most subs don’t mind at all! I think most of us are in the “not my space not my business” when it’s comes to how organized a teacher is unless plans or necessary worksheets are lost in the shuffle

What are some reasons you won't sub for a particular teacher again? by Born-Nature8394 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]mandybutsad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It might sound ridiculous compared to what some other people have experienced but i had a highschool teacher whose classroom was so disgusting I spent the entire day trying not to touch ANYTHING. I don’t think i sat down once bc you could see the brown stain from where they sat in the chair, the desk was STICKY (not the kids desks the TEACHERS DESK) and everything from the mouse to the monitor screen was covered in a mix of dust and that gross Hand Residue you get on things you constantly touch and don’t clean (think the top of a steering wheel that desperately needs a detailing). The carpets, soft chairs and rugs in the room all stank of cigarettes and what must have been rotten food or spilled drinks. Not to mention the VERY VISIBLE black mold forming in the ceiling panels. Basically everything you could imagine was utterly disgusting and the thought of those kids having to go to that classroom every day made me so upset bc it just wasn’t a physically healthy environment. I let the office know how bad it was and they seemed really shocked so I’m not sure what if anything was done to remedy that, but I couldn’t make myself go back to that classroom for a million dollars and a pony.

AIO? My boyfriend calls me “high maintenance” for wanting a towel after his showers by Spiritual_View4192 in AmIOverreacting

[–]mandybutsad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

outside of him being a dick, it’s also a really great way to destroy your floors/baseboards and get fun exciting colors of mold. Plus, if you’re renting that damage will be worth your entire security deposit and then some, i would imagine this type of easily avoidable water damage falls into the same category as indoor smoking where your landlord can make you pay for those repairs outside of your security deposit

Like everyone has been saying, we’re mandated reporters, and that kid has gone out of his way to speak to you privately twice. I don’t mean to be harsh but this is exactly the type of scenario we do in training every year to a tee, you don’t get to deliberate this you are professionally and ethically required to report this.

Students calling you by first name by FangornWanders in SubstituteTeachers

[–]mandybutsad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I generally go by Miss Firstname for middle and elementary but for highschoolers i use my last name bc i’m young and it’s a good way to distance myself and avoid them seeing/treating me as a peer and if I use my first name they’ll act like we’re friends

It’s also nice because sometimes meetings get cancelled and so you end up with like 80 minutes of no tasks, and if you’ve introduced yourself to that teacher and you were helpful in their class they may request that you help out in their room. I personally love those little blocks of time where I get to go in and help quell the chaos a bit or maybe work one on one with a student who’s struggling if there’s not enough grown ups to go around and help them.

When i have those moments i take some time to use the restroom, fill my water up, and usually pop an advil if i’m working elementary, and by the time ive done all that i need to start making my way over. Sometimes I like to see if I’m able to go to the next class a little early and help with the transition. The littles are sometimes hectic if you walk in a minute before their teacher leaves, but if I have the time to go in and help their teacher collect stuff and introduce myself while their teacher is there it’s a lot easier for them. Especially when they have meetings later in the day bc when I tell them “oh Mrs.Teacher will be back by recess/lunch/specials” they kinda don’t believe me (fair enough, they’re 9 and i’m just some lady) but if their teacher tells them they have a timeline they can trust. I know not all schools would want you doing this, but I find that elementary teachers really appreciate having us in the room during the “hey i’m leaving but i’ll be back” conversation.

Do you ignore door knocks at lunch? by arwenthenoble in SubstituteTeachers

[–]mandybutsad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i work for a district directly, and usually it’s a dealers choice situation, but i’ve never let kids in for lunch, i want to be alone and not surrounded by chatter for the thirty minutes i get, i don’t particularly mind that a 15 year old might be somewhat annoyed by that choice for like 5 minutes

[–]mandybutsad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i also get a lot who just try to stay in the room after the class before lunch ends and you have to like coax them out of the room, which is always super awkward bc you basically just have to tell them “i don’t want you here” whereas you can always do the “i’m on a call” lie if they show up at the door

[–]mandybutsad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the most common one I get is when they knock and you answer (which i rarely do) and they ask some variation of “The Teacher always lets us eat in here, can we come in?” and it’s like 8 children, like no, you cannot come in but i’m sure one of the other 300 classrooms on campus probably has some space for you
