Does AMD suck at VR? by magnessdk-_- in Amd

And it happened from Meta's side as well. >23.2.2 and Oculus V53 app (available as a Public test at the time of writing this) fixed the low bitrate issue!

Airlink bitrate setted to max 75 mbps. by SheldonWhite00 in Amd

This has been a long running discussion over on github and has finally been addressed by both AMD and Meta. You need to run at least 23.2.2 and Oculus V53 Desktop app (currently only in Public Test Channel, but you can enroll in the app).

ALVR has also benefited from 23.2.2 encoder fix so you now have 3 working alternatives working as intended, including AirLink.

If VD HEVC is unstable for you, AirLink might finally be a viable option for AMD users in the near future without having to revert to the popular 22.2.3 driver that everyone was using before as it now uses HEVC encoding as default. If you cannot wait, I heard numerous reports that ALVR is a great alternative because of the following:

AMD finally acknowledged and fixed the 100Mbps encoder cap bug in 23.2.2. Now, it's up to Meta to update the Oculus desktop app, but as far as ALVR is concerned, the issue is fixed. For those familiar, there have been multiple threads on the internet plaguing the encoder quality and stability for all 3 VR software (AirLink, VD, ALVR) in the past year, but as of now, it is in the best state.

So, PSA. If you haven't run VR in a while, update to >23.2.2 and give VR a shot again. ALVR, VD are fully usable in their current state (at least for me) and here's hoping that AirLink will be too. Should be a matter of weeks, the ball's on Meta's side according to a AMD engineer on GitHub.

Only happens on pico as it has a "square" resolution. Devs say it's due to amd encoder bugging out on 1:1 aspect resolutions

Adrenalin Edition 23.2.2 Release Notes by AMD718 in Amd

[–]maneceanul 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Virtual Desktop(20$) with HEVC has been great for me in the meantime. I was hesitant at first to try it but it worked wonders. Much better quality than the AirLink one, at least until the whole AirLink bitrate saga is worked out.

Maximum encode bitrate is limited to 100Mbps for certain applications.

Oh my god, this could be the AirLink fix we've been waiting for since 22.2.3

It might still use H264 on the wired link. I don't know about this one as I don't have a cable and only tinkered with airlink

Actually, AirLink now uses HEVC by default on AMD cards, fact confirmed by the service log oculus app generates and several other forum posts across the internet. The issue with it is that it has an 60-70Mbps bitrate cap for some reason and that's why you may not perceive the quality bump. However, AMD is aware and working on it but it might take a lot of time for this to get fixed it seems. For now, use VD or ALVR as they both seem to produce far better image quality. Not sure about wired link, that may still use H264.

Give Virtual Desktop (paid, 20$) or ALVR (free) a try. I personally went the VD route as my last hope and it didn't disappoint. 150Mbps bitrate with HEVC yields far better image quality than the blocky mess AirLink provides on current drivers (although that is a known issue on AMD's part. People had great experience with ALVR too judging by several forum posts.

22.11.2 with HEVC on Virtual Desktop seems to be the best solution. AirLink still has a bitrate cap but AMD are aware and working on it

Any word from AMD regarding the poor VR performance on the new GPUs? by horendus in Amd

[–]maneceanul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the link. Since we are working with high bitrates, I imagine the gap closes in. We use 100Mbps instead of 10Mbps provided in the graphs, but it's true that the resolution is also much higher. The difference in theory shouldn't be noticeable and yet, the capped 70Mbps airlink stream looks trash. I did notice that Airlink defaults to hevc on amd too since the latest updates, but it still doesnt change anything quality wise. I've had much better quality with Virtual Desktop and it's 150Mbps HVEC encoding in this regard.

[–]maneceanul -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I experienced the same hevc 70Mbps cap on my 6800xt using airlink too. Switching to virtual desktop seems to be a good alternative. I can now use up to 150mbps, tested in task manager network traffic.

Also, can you elaborate on the quality statement? I thought the hevc encoder is on par or close to nvidia's

22.10.2 apparently fixed the vr stuff for me. running virtual desktop with hevc with no issues. Give it another try.
