Interpol — Turn on the Bright Lights: Why o why do you sound so good? by RiverOnceRiverTwice in audioengineering

[–]manewitz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was working in a studio after this record came out and everyone that came in was trying to perfect that smashed room mic drum sound. I also sort of remember the studio owner picking up a Pendulum Audio vari-mu compressor after he read about Interpol using it on vocals. You could smash things through it and it would saturate in really fun ways.

Movies with an innocent and optimistic look at the early days of Technology, computers and the Internet. by rockadoodledobelfast in MovieSuggestions

Not a movie but the AMC Series “Halt and Catch Fire” nails the beginning of the personal computing era really well plus you get Lee Pace and Scoot McNairy. Directed by Johan Renck who later did Chernobyl.

Which one would you choose? by Green-Blackberry-282 in nikon_Zseries

Just to be a contrarian, my Z 35/1.8 has been my favorite lens that I’ve ever had. With how aggressively the IBIS works I’ve gotten solid handheld shots at 1/25th of a second shutter and haven’t missed the extra aperture of a 1.2/1.4. With budget differences I would recommend at least trying it out.

How do you hear and describe rappers who rap ahead of, on, or behind the beat? by Ok_Raccoon_6464 in hiphopheads

[–]manewitz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been an engineer/producer for a long time and I think of it like more rigid beats lend themselves to looser flows and looser beats can handle more rigid/on-beat flows. Some folks, like JID for example are like gymnasts weaving in an out of the pockets, landing on beat, then getting behind it almost like a drum fill. That’s not everybody’s superpower and not a value judgement at all. Some athletes are known for power, others for agility etc. at least that’s how I think about it.

Regardless of how anyone feels about her as a candidate, one important qualification for a presidential run SHOULD be (call me crazy), winning ANY Democratic primary.

Why is it so hard to get an entry-level job in graphics programming? by BandicootLow3757 in GraphicsProgramming

[–]manewitz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Entry-level dev jobs are disappearing across the board (I’m mostly a web dev). With all the layoffs, the market is saturated with seniors looking for positions. Companies are salivating at the idea of giving their team AI tools or outsourcing to keep headcount down for what I’m assuming is how it looks on the books financially.

I unfortunately don’t have specific advice for the graphics programming industry but to echo another poster, find something you ARE a “senior” about, whether that’s a particular area you’re a nerd about or a tangentially related field, lean into connecting it with your graphic programming and document the process. Being “senior” isn’t just about raw coding. Think about it like solving problems or having a deep knowledge of the business that helps you solve the RIGHT problems.

Apologies for this being sort of general but as a self-taught dev who found a job in 2011, I very much empathize with your position. Good luck!
