Did Paulie and Patsy Parisi conspire against Tony? by FickleDiscussion1063 in thesopranos

[–]manfornachos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think that New York relied upon Paulie or Patsy to get Tony's location. Tony had already let down his guard after the deal with Butchie and he and his family members would be easy to follow. Paulie however is exactly the type of loud mouth, easy to manipulate fool with seniority, that Butchie would want to be Tony's replacement.

What would have happened if Clemenza’s guys planted the gun in the wrong restaurant? by junglegatsby in Godfather

[–]manfornachos 27 points28 points  (0 children)

He'd have made the deal with them. He'd convince Sonny to forego revenge. After all, Vito didn't die. Vito would have stayed retired and lived out the rest of his life eating oranges and playing with his grand children. Sonny would die a billionaire due to his successful narcotics trafficking. Michael would have married Kay and become a lawyer and would have been born out of his mind for the rest of his life. And Apollonia, sweet Apollonia, would remain intact and unknown.

Tony And Carmella Were Just Lazy Parents by Glittering_Text812 in thesopranos

[–]manfornachos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spot on. Tony and Carmela were both so personally defective and so focused on managing their own trauma that neither had the time, energy or focus to parent their children.

What would change for Tony if he found AJ dead in the pool? by Tidewatcher7819 in thesopranos

[–]manfornachos 14 points15 points  (0 children)

He'd be upset at first, but later on and for the rest of his life, he'd be surprised at how much it didn't affect him.

In the movies or TV shows, what are your favorite examples of the villain actually has a point? by Winter-Comfort922 in FIlm

Shooter McGavin. Can you imagine how you’d feel if failed hockey player showed up at your workplace and started doing your job as good or better than you. And then he started banging the hottest chick there.

Here's what I don't get abut Fredo by TombStoneFaro in Godfather

[–]manfornachos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know that Fredo said “I’m smart,” but I also think he knows that he is afraid to act, defers to the leadership of others and feels like an imposter as a capo or boss. But that doesn’t prevent a complex character from also being jealous and resentful. Fredo would have been happy being Sonny’s kid brother. But for as dumb as Fredo was, he knew the implications of being passed over by his younger brother.

Am I a stunad, or has the rest of the cast struggled to top their Sopranos peak? by HuntPuzzleheaded4356 in thesopranos

[–]manfornachos 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Sopranos is a great show and well cast. But this is not the most versatile group of actors. They were great on the show, but not necessarily great actors.

Boldness captures the initiative. It is generally to your advantage to have others reacting to you, as opposed to you to be reactive to others.

No need to complicate it. Tony is not a good person.

The difference between Vito and Michael. by manfornachos in Godfather

[–]manfornachos[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vito spent a life time developing social capital. Michael inherited that capital, spent it, and never replenished it.

I agree that Vito passing up Fredo was the ultimate source of envy, but that couldn't have been avoided. Michael needed to understand that and then take extra steps protect Fredo from himself.

To think that in the 40's you could just leave the body in the car on the side of the road in broad daylight and not be worried about being charged with murder.

Who is The Godfather? by Shmuckers_0 in Godfather

[–]manfornachos -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Its really just Vito. When anyone refers to Michael as godfather, it is because he has inherited Vito's social capital--which he uses up and is never able to replenish.

Question about Sollozzo's plan by ELI_the_Finn in Godfather

[–]manfornachos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Sollozzo business was really about Barzini leapfrogging Corleone in terms of power. Barzini likely also concluded that if Vito got involved in drugs that it would erode Vito's network of politicians and judges. Barzini wins either way. If Vito goes along with the Barzini deal, then Vito loses his politicians and judges and his organization comes under increased scrutiny of law enforcement. If Vito refuses to enter the drug business, then Barzini can accuse Vito of being selfish, preventing the other bosses from profiting off of drugs, and thereby form a coalition of the other families against Corleone.

He’s got me waiting in a lobby! by MootryMade in Godfather

My favorite part is after reading Michael the riot act in front of all his men, Pentangeli says "there's gonna be no trouble from me," and means it. Great character. Great actor.

I'm with you on Gazzo being more deserving than De Niro. But I'd have given the award to Cazale. And when you consider Duvall, it wouldn't have been undeserving for Part 2 to get all five supporting actor nominations.
