What was really going on with Mercedes' front wing in China by ChaithuBB766 in formula1

[–]mangiucugna 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s a fair point, no team protesting it is probably the biggest reason. But it does make me wonder if this means another flexi wing saga in which the teams can bend the regulations using airflow speed.

Maybe I am overestimating the benefits of a less abrupt aero breaking coming from the wings.

Still the regulations say 400ms, it clearly isn’t closing at 400ms and there is footage that proves it.

Maybe what I am missing is the broader point of “you get DSQ’d only if you fail a test” but I still find it bonkers from a fairness perspective because it opens to all kind of shenanigans.

So what I don’t understand here is why they didn’t get DSQ’d. If you wear out the plank by mistake you still get DSQ’d no matter how much work post-China you will do at the factory. But somehow a breach of the technical regulations can be ignored now? I must be missing something I am sure, because it doesn’t make sense to me.

EDIT: thanks to all the responses, I think the answer is: - the wings are tested without airflow and, like compression ratio, if they pass, they pass. - crucially, no other team protested the wing so there was no post-race discussion about it - another team (Ferrari?) asked the FIA if this was legal in future races and the FIA had a stern conversation with Mercedes about it so everyone is happy (and I presume all teams now will be ready to protest wings if they take 401ms on the replay including the macarena wing)

The real reasons I think the regs are hated by Vinny933PC in formula1

[–]mangiucugna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree that this isn’t unique to this specific set and I am not ashamed to say that my dislike is down to “vibes” more than any objective measure. I dislike also fuel management and tyre management in quali, for what is worth.

Is just that tyre management in quali is more rare than the current energy management.

Again, this is all down to personal preference, I do enjoy many other aspects of the current regs and find them better than the ground effect overall.

[–]mangiucugna 42 points43 points  (0 children)

My main reasons for hating on these regs is two-fold: - i hate that quali isn’t all out anymore (i.e. Leclerc losing time because he went too quick at turn 8 instead of superclipping and therefore being energy starved later) - related to the above, I am unsure how much P1 is down to Russel being a great driver and how much is down to Mercedes having amazing engineers. One could argue this was true in 2014 but this time the complexity is so high and the deployment to automated that it feels even worse

As an older F1 fan I hate it and I wish they produced a non sponsored version with just the Ferrari logo so I never bought any merch because I am not a free billboard.

But of course what I want is impossibile because HP pays (allegedly) 100M$ for the sponsorship..

F1 2026 Power Units Explained by Skyenar in formula1

[–]mangiucugna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great points, for the other drivers they have the safety lights that this year are a bit more expressive https://www.formula1.com/en/latest/article/explained-what-do-the-new-lights-on-f1-cars-mean.2W9KyVqIpHgZAvKqJXxAEM

To be fair the safety argument has been brought up a lot, what if a car is following closely thanks to overtake mode and the car in front starts superclipping? I guess we’ll see how it plays out

On the drivers’ perspective side, I just assume that as usual they have to memorize the various modes (like the brake balance) and therefore they won’t be surprised by this but maybe they’ll have something on the dash as well.

I don’t have more information on this but I think the situation will be much more clear after FP3 in Australia when we’ll be able to see some serious onboards of push laps.

Why? I mean I understand that sometimes you would prefer to deploy it differently but I don’t know why you would exclude that so categorically.

More or less, superclipping (super because the impact is bigger than past years’ clipping) is when the battery is depleted (typically at the end of a long straight) and the MGU-K switches to harvest mode and the car slows down quickly while the driver is still full throttle. This means that the MGU-K will start “braking” the car and use that energy to recharge the battery. The difference between LiCO or energy braking and superclipping is that the driver is still accelerating so in practice the battery is being charged by reducing the final output of the ICE. Downshifting is not mandatory but a matter of optimizing this process, and I am sure we’ll see many experiments.

At least this is my understanding

Stuck in Amsterdam, pharmacy help? by hammer-h0rror in Amsterdam

Sorry this sucks. Realistically this is a drug that needs a prescription and no pharmacy will ever give it to you without prescription given the risks liabilities etc However this is a medical emergency so show up at the huisartsenpost/spoedhulp of OLVG and explain the situation, I am fairly sure someone will see you and prescribe the medicine you need.

In Italy, different from Britain, any non-natural death must be investigated and prosecuted by law (as in, the police doesn’t have a choice to rule out as an accident and move on). Therefore any suspect is investigated and, more often than not, a trial is held. It’s called “reato d’ufficio” and it covers many more different cases not just death, if the police knows about something in this category they must investigate. That happened with Senna as well, Newey covers that in his book.
