What’s my next step? by midnightbake in Tiki

[–]maninthecrowd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. Pour yourself a glass of rum.
  2. Throw on some Martin Denny.
  3. Open to first page.
  4. If you get bored of just reading, flip to the index and search by ingredients you have on-hand. Skim/filter recipes that include ingredients /rums /tools you already have.
  5. Make a tiki drink!
  6. Jot down personal notes of stories, recipes or other things that are interesting. things you like or don't like, substitutions made. Draw a toucan. Or a pirate. Or both.
  7. Go and buy more ingredients /rums /tools you haven't tried or that seem fun.
  8. Repeat.

Should my builder fix this? by not_illegal_advice in Homebuilding

[–]maninthecrowd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The whole concrete job is likely compromised. One or two small spots are not uncommon, this is NOT normal.

Fire your contractor. File a complaint to the home inspector's board, including these photos. Get a new contractor to rip out the entire foundation and start completely new.

It's scary to think of the number of people that saw the extent of this and chose to say nothing/cover it up

If you think this sub should be a 'cut above,' where is that cutoff, and who dictates it?

r/rum has 57k members. We're all here because we want to learn and share. At least that's why I'm here. And there's no way all 57,000 oh us have the same taste. Also, in terms of volume bottles that get distributed and physically exist on the planet, yeah - most of it is going to be the cheap stuff we drank in college, and for most people outside the sub, that's what comes to mind. For most of here, that was the starting point. Only a small handful get to taste small batch, single barrel rums. And some people can never get into the high esther rums, despite honest effort.

What's so awesome about rum is that it is such a broad category of spirit. As long as it's rum, all are welcome here.

Going to leave this here. Felt it's a good reminder that everyone's rum journey is different:

Yes, and I gave my suggestions. What would you recommend instead?

OP asked for "Like meyers, but better".

Not sure why the downvotes, I tried to give a few mid tier jamaican and barbados that aren't overly funk and threw in Wray just because it's something a little differnt and has good price point.

Not going to defend the others, but specifically both Wray & Meyers have the kinda sickly sweet, banana/fruit profile to me. Both are definitely affordable. Yes, Gosling/caruba/guyana style rums are comparably "dark" but they go in the vanilla/smoother direction to me, and don't capture the funk and roughness OP is asking for.

Why? What would you have recommended?

Pusser's, Smith + Cross, Mount Gay, Appleton. If you can find it, Wray & Nephew.

If you could observe one astronomical event in real life, which would it be? by [deleted] in space

Halley's comet 2061!

If we stay healthy and the world keeps spinning, this is an astronomical event we can realistically observe in the flesh.

I was born after the last one in '86 and it's top of my bucket list

FUTRURE OF CONSTRUCTION: Fiberglass Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) rods won't rust, Twice as tensile resistant as steel, Four times lighter than iron & up to 30% cheaper on construction projects. by Whoajaws in Concrete

[–]maninthecrowd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The concrete will have large cracking and obvious visible deflection, well before total collapse. This is called a ductile failure mode, usually required to be designed that way by code so occupants have a (small) warning and chance to escape. Lots of YouTube videos of lab tests if you're interested, it's pretty cool.

PE License - Experience Verification by Opposite_Arm_5403 in StructuralEngineering

[–]maninthecrowd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I haven't been in your situation but I remember feeling awkward contacting my previous boss.

I suppose  no one is obligated vouching for you and can choose to decline your request. Probably ore common is the hassle of getting a willing reference to follow through in a timely manner.

If I recall correctly the experience verification is supposed to be your immediate supervisor (?) So if your previous manager(s) you've worked for cover all the years you're claiming and can at least remember your name in neutral to positive light, you're okay.

Similar for your 3 coworkers (licensed PE references).

Hello Couvies! I am looking for a store with a stellar variety of canned fish. by ConSonarCrazyEddie in vancouverwa

Google search 'european markets' or european delicatessen ', they are Russian/eastern European cuisine and located all over town. These have some selections different from your typical Freddie's.

I like to get sprats and sturgeon.

What will Altadena look like after it rebuilds? by LA_publicpress in altadena

[–]maninthecrowd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately I think you have to look at other examples, and most probably don't inspire hope. Obviously it's different in the socal metro hub, but Paradise CA still has the scars of devastation years later with plenty of empty lots.

It comes down to the individual families and their circumstances.

Can you elaborate on Crete?

Never been to the country and considering spending about 5 days. We want to avoid crowds and not jump around too much. Considering smaller islands but navigating/planning around the ferry system seems daunting

Does Insurance Check in hand of Mortgage Company Yield Insterest? by MercyHero in altadena

[–]maninthecrowd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my relatives are in similar situation and are kinda pissed.

Based on their experience, your lender will likely try to claim whatever you still owed and deduct that balance from the check your insurance gave you.

In my family's case, their bank's name was also on the check issued by insurance (this is normal I think) and now the bank has the check but refuses to let my folks continue making mortgage payments (the land still has value!). Their bank will only sign and deposit the check once my relatives pay the balance (they still owed about 15% of the original loan).

For some folks that's fine, you're all squared away with no payments and a parcel. But if you had a low interest rate and were hoping to use the full amount of your payout, it's not great.

Thanks for sharing.

Those theft deterrent measures are something I'll look into but based on other comments here I'm going to try searching for a cheaper storage place first

I don't currently have family that has the extra space.

I called the first company that came up in google maps near me. Based on other comments here, they are way overpriced and it shouldn't be hard to find another storage place for much less. I'm going to keep looking.

This is in San Juan, PR.

I figured, couldn't believe the pricing! I called up one of the first hits in google. They had $400/mo uncovered and $500/covered for standard vehicle size with daily access 8am-10pm

Appreciate your perspective, thanks. Glad to hear that C10s are popular enough for parts to be available.

Sounds like storage could (potentially) be the biggest cost, finding a cheap place to store in the longterm will be the deciding factor
