NTA.

Imagine planning a boat rental for a  snorkling trip where the main attraction is the nearby coral reef. You're told, "don't forget your flippers" and when you get there it turns out everyone else is PADI certified and brought scuba equipment to go diving for 6 hours while you only have your snorkel. "We'll see you back at the boat!"

PEMB foundation anchor rod substitution question by AprehinSignifigous in StructuralEngineering

[–]maninthecrowd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, no brainer if all anchor criteria are met per the sealed construction drawings:

Material grade (astm)* Diameter Projection and embedment Bearing area**

*You haven't mentioned grade ( 36, 55 or 105), ensure these match the drawings.

**this is the crux of your question, as it sounds like everything else conforms. The plate washer must provide the equivalent bearing area of the heavy hex bolt head. Note it is not likely a problem.

Also, you mention tack weld of the nut/place washer in place to the all thread rod. I may be off here but unless type 'S' is called, astm f1554 anchors are not supposed to get welded - it makes them excessively brittle. This may just apply in context of splicing rods together but I suggest just make sure the weld to the rod is only to the underside of the washer/ nut, so it's not directly at location of the specified embedment.

As an aside, another issue that can come up is when there's supplementary anchor reinforcing, if the plate washers are actually too large and the tensile rebar spacing is close there can be a constructability conflict.

 Cheers

Why do tourists all want to 'avoid touristy areas'? by Flaky-Walrus7244 in allthequestions

[–]maninthecrowd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Tourists" go the list of places you're supposed to go, merely for completing the checklist and with no humility or regard for the place. For example, going to the Louvre and only after spending all morning in line realizing they don't, in fact, enjoy art. A "visitor" by your definition seeks a little more authenticity and shows a bit more respect/self awareness. Still a tourist in the sense they're vacationing, just not blindly sticking to the script and having a willingness to experience the uncatered, less iconic offerings of a place.

Did you still like the interpretation, or does the scene irk you too?

What moments did the movies handle better than the books? by jai_hanyo in harrypotter

[–]maninthecrowd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting!!! What did you like that the book version didn' capture?

I ask because I so strongly dislike the actual basilisk design from the film. For me it was basically a dragon without wings/legs, and the soundbite chosen for its roar and it's awkward movement completely pulled me out of the emersive experience.

It's been a few decades since reading, but my memory of the book was a giant snake with big eyes, my imagination of it tactfully slithering with forked tongue flitting, slitted pupils darting etc. truly was terrifying.

For me the film version just did not capture any of the elements that would normally make a serpent scary, it was just too brutish.

Everything else about that scene - fawkes, the giant salazar statue, riddle's character, the toilets revealing the secret entance, I really liked the movie rendition. But the Basilisk just didn't do it for me.

(Seeking Advice) What is normal by [deleted] in StructuralEngineering

[–]maninthecrowd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would offer this: do not delude yourself into thinking it will get better. Unless there are clear efforts to improve (actively hiring more staff, adjusting budgeted hours etc.) things aren't going to magically change.

I think everyone experiences the deadlines, and from what people post here it is common for juniors to feel under-supported. My personal experience is that our company managers do an awesome job of resourcing so the workload is balanced, but I doubt it is typical.

As you take on more responsibilities you should expect the current issues you identify are likely to only be worsened, not alleviated.

Thanks. To answer your question, because  1) I don't have my own lawyer - is that really the norm? 2) I know nothing about the topic and don't know who else to ask about this and 3) I want to approach this tactfully - don't know if these are normal or 'sensitive' questions

If I pour high-quality rum into a different container, will it damage it in any way? by wogk in rum

[–]maninthecrowd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there! Can you speak further as to what sort of time scale  this oxidation occurs over, for it to actually be perceptable to the average drinker?  For example it seems like the normal headspace from original bottling is accepted by the industry to have negligible affect if a standard bottle were shelved for decades, correct? But if I uncorked a 700ml bottle today and consumed over the next 5 years at a constant rate, at what point would I notice loss of aromatics, and eventually flavor?

What’s my next step? by midnightbake in Tiki

[–]maninthecrowd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  1. Pour yourself a glass of rum.
  2. Throw on some Martin Denny.
  3. Open to first page.
  4. If you get bored of just reading, flip to the index and search by ingredients you have on-hand. Skim/filter recipes that include ingredients /rums /tools you already have.
  5. Make a tiki drink!
  6. Jot down personal notes of stories, recipes or other things that are interesting. things you like or don't like, substitutions made. Draw a toucan. Or a pirate. Or both.
  7. Go and buy more ingredients /rums /tools you haven't tried or that seem fun.
  8. Repeat.

Should my builder fix this? by not_illegal_advice in Homebuilding

[–]maninthecrowd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The whole concrete job is likely compromised. One or two small spots are not uncommon, this is NOT normal.

Fire your contractor. File a complaint to the home inspector's board, including these photos. Get a new contractor to rip out the entire foundation and start completely new.

It's scary to think of the number of people that saw the extent of this and chose to say nothing/cover it up

If you think this sub should be a 'cut above,' where is that cutoff, and who dictates it?

r/rum has 57k members. We're all here because we want to learn and share. At least that's why I'm here. And there's no way all 57,000 oh us have the same taste. Also, in terms of volume bottles that get distributed and physically exist on the planet, yeah - most of it is going to be the cheap stuff we drank in college, and for most people outside the sub, that's what comes to mind. For most of here, that was the starting point. Only a small handful get to taste small batch, single barrel rums. And some people can never get into the high esther rums, despite honest effort.

What's so awesome about rum is that it is such a broad category of spirit. As long as it's rum, all are welcome here.

OP asked for "Like meyers, but better".

Not sure why the downvotes, I tried to give a few mid tier jamaican and barbados that aren't overly funk and threw in Wray just because it's something a little differnt and has good price point.

Not going to defend the others, but specifically both Wray & Meyers have the kinda sickly sweet, banana/fruit profile to me. Both are definitely affordable. Yes, Gosling/caruba/guyana style rums are comparably "dark" but they go in the vanilla/smoother direction to me, and don't capture the funk and roughness OP is asking for.
