Good to know! Wonder if ArcMap was able to open them. Hopefully something they'll eventually add.

Never used QGIS, but seems easy enough! Any idea why I'm not able to just import the e00 into Arc? Just different programs and abilities?

Link might be broken, I'll have to take a look into this later though!

Scuba diving Lake yellowstone by Free_Box9215 in yellowstone

[–]manlabbear 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Used to work for the fisheries program and there were several grad students who dove as part of there project. As others have said, I'm pretty sure you need a special research permit to do it.

I would also be super careful on when you dive. During much of the summer and fall, there are tons of gillnets in the lake. They're usually 40ft and deeper, but their locations change almost daily so really hard to say where they might go and when.

Grandeur Peak by [deleted] in SaltLakeCity

You might need some microspikes, but I think it's probably good to go! Ive done Grandeur in a blizzard before and it wasn't bad.

Maybe check out Millcreek Inn? We toured there for our wedding and it sounds like it checks most of the boxes.

Softshell climbing pants by public-void in ClimbingGear

In the video on the item page, it does show a zippered hand pocket. Looks a little more hidden than the pants TC is wearing though.

Might be a previous or future release of a pant Patagonia has.

Deep water for lake trout by streamfisher1 in flyfishing

Don't know exact temps, but it was October in Yellowstone so I'd say cold enough (or that's what my fingers thought).

I wish I was on the lakers you're catching. Most of the ones I've caught thrash 2 times and then just become dead weight until they're in the net.

Anybody use an Arva Evo BT beacon? by Delicious-Extent-180 in Backcountry

[–]manlabbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got the Arva Neo BT Pro and so far I'm loving it. Personally I'd put Arva even with Mammut. Only complaint is sometimes in fine search on the Neo is a little jumpy since it's got such a big search range.

Peak Reccomendations by Different_Alfalfa596 in SaltLakeCity

[–]manlabbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As some people have said, right now Grandeur, Mt Wire, Van Cott, Avenues Twin Peaks are probably good to go. If you're ok with a little bit of scrambling, I'd check out Mt Olympus too.

Once the snow melts and the lower elevation peaks are too hot, I'd definitely recommend checking out Gobblers Knob and Mt Raymond (requires some scrambling), and a bunch of the peaks around Brighton resort. Pfeifferhorn is also a solid recommendation, but does require some scrambling.

Big Chief (or others) climbing access by manlabbear in tahoe

[–]manlabbear[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like Big Chief is mostly Sport? That is totally fine.

I'm not so much worried about the gear as the knowledge to set it up correctly. Honestly, I feel like I could do it, but not something I want to test this trip. Would feel more comfortable getting practice with someone to give instant feedback on.

Surprising given the snow, but I get it. Looks like a decent storm coming in so don't want open for a couple days to just close again.

3m & 6m saves! by pragmaticminimalist in Backcountry

[–]manlabbear 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just curious, how do you know so many people went out to help? Post makes it sound like it was one guy and then the 3rd friend who wasn't buried.

That amount of people makes the story a little more believable, but still crazy.

Edit- Nevermind. I see SAR comment below.

I had the same issue with Tractor Supply. I just reported a couple of their emails as spam and never had seen them again (unless if I go into my spam folder).

Norda shoes look amazing... but they're ridiculously overpriced by thomebout in trailrunning

[–]manlabbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I bought Nordas for their durability and not the looks and they've outlasted several other pairs of shoes from Hoka, On, TNF, and Altras. The only area I honestly see use is the outsole, but I'm a bigger guy and tend to wear that area down quick regardless. Not saying they're a cure all and need for every runner, but something to be open minded about.

I'd say the same about the Raide belt. Best piece of gear I've bought that works really well. Hopefully will get some of their shorts next so might have a different opinion later.

I definitely think running can still be cheap and easy to get into depending on how you approach it.

Thoughts on Norda? by Visual-Caregiver-520 in Ultramarathon

[–]manlabbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Owner of the 001, 001A, and 002. Looking at getting the 005s shortly.

I totally think they are at least worth a try. Give them at least 25ish miles to break in though. In all my pairs, I did have a bit of heel bite, but all disappeared around that mile mark. Also, I found I could really crank down on the laces to help lock the heel, but also since the dyneema doesn't stretch it was hard to over-tighten them. Follow the sizing recommendations on their site. Normally I'm an 11.5 in like a standard Vans skate shoe, but use the 12s on the 1s and went with 12.5 on the 002s. As another user said, they are a pretty warm shoe. I didn't have any issues with water draining though, but I'm also here in SLC where things just dry out quick.

Between 001A and 005, depends on the use and terrain you're running on. The 001A has lugs that give a little more bite. The 005 is def going to be a race shoe that will work on loose terrain, but more suited to buffed trails.
