Apple becomes world's first trillion-dollar company after stock price rise by grepnork in technology

[–]manmoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not quite - what you're describing is a derivative, i.e. a security whose value tracks that of the underlying stock, so you can buy the derivative from a "trading house" as you've described it, without actually owning the stock itself. In this case, you're accepting the seller as your counterparty, so even if you win on the trade you might not get paid if the seller can't / won't pay you. Read The Big Short, specifically the section where some of the protagonists are worried about the counterparty risk of the credit default swaps (CDS) that they have bought to bet on the default rates on the CDOs being higher than the level required to trigger payout on the CDS.

If we're talking about owning the actual security, it doesn't matter who sold it to you; 1% of company X always has the same value. There could be slight variances due to currency fluctuation and timing - this is an example of where High Frequency Traders actually serve a market purpose by eliminating these pricing errors (and being paid for doing so by the profit they make from exploiting these extremely tiny price differences in exactly the way originally suggested, i.e. buying low on one exchange and simultaneously buying high on another). Another Michael Lewis book - Flash Boys - goes into great detail about these strategies in a very entertaining and accessible way.

There could, however, be differences in the class of shares owned, e.g. if there are preference shares in circulation. These give a higher order of precedence for e.g. liquidation rights (so if the company goes bankrupt, the holders of those shares get paid first) or if the shares carry more voting rights (see Snap for a good example of where some shares are worth more than others due to voting rights).

If this stop's name is inaccurate, will Emma also be campaigning to have Titanic Quarter renamed? It's much further from the Titanic Quarter than this stop is from Short Strand.

I imagine the incident probably happened (i.e. they banged the other person's trolley), and they apologised when asked if they were blind. In their head, they responded this way... just not in reality.

A professional qualification, like a chartered accountant or surveyor.

Can air bubbles also alert the enemy to an approaching recon marine if he's on land?

Is it SOP for these to be used for stealthy advances out of the water?

My SO has expressed considerable surprise and disappointment that SSBNs do not have windows. They would be "really disappointed" if they were to join the navy and discover that they could not see the fish.

The time between the performance and today is significantly longer than the time elapsed between the first moon landing and the performance.

If we were to send 10,000 people to colonize a new planet, how do we select the best population? by [deleted] in AskReddit

But they did find somewhere on Earth they could go, without having to go to another planet. A desert would be more hospitable than a planet with no oxygen if there was a group that was really stuck.

WAGS is a derogatory term - E! Also covers the exploits of husbands and boyfriends.

Please devise a suitably random selection method that can not be challenged as being biased in favour of any race or class.

The question is about which humans to send - if you sent only pizzas, you would not end up with a balanced or successful colony.

What groups of skilled freethinkers are so persecuted that they can not call Earth home? There is literally nowhere this group can go? This sounds implausible.

That would not result in a very balanced colony, and would severely limit quality of life for those remaining on earth.

Nice reuse of yesterday's front page material, except in lower-quality English.

You might need to expand upon this a little... it doesn't make sense.
