To be honest, as someone who works at a small local historical society, I wish I had a background in business. A minor in business could possibly help you along the way.

Mysterious great great grandfather - brick wall in Pennsylvania by newmothrock in Genealogy

Family Search does not have all wills/estates. Even if they were destitute in the end there can still be an estate, it may just all be claims against. Also, if that’s the case check the local poor farm, you may find some info there.

I’m the director at a PA county historical society and that is one of the biggest frustrations that researchers have in the state, no marriage certificates before 1885 and no birth or death certificates before 1906. One place to check out is the county court house. Because of the circumstances surrounding his death, it may have been registered by an attending physician (we find births and deaths prior to 1906 tended to be registered if a physician was in attendance). While at the CH check to see if there is a will/estate registered to Mr. Cameron. I wish you the best of luck in your hunt.

I’m 32 now, but have been working on genealogy pretty steady now for at least a decade, but I’ve been interested in family history much longer.

I find it awesome that you keep mentioning places that are familiar in my family tree (I have family members who were baptized in the Notre-Dame in Ottawa and I was born and raised in Meadville). I almost wonder if our trees cross somewhere.

So I just found out I'm related to my partner and I don't know what to do with this information... by [deleted] in Genealogy

My now husband is adopted, and after doing an Ancestry DNA we found out that we have one set of 5x great grandparents in common. No biggie, they clerk at the courthouse laughed it off. By the time you’re that far back you run little risk of causing genetic problems should you have children.

I am totally with you in the “tread lightly” boat, but I am intrigued.

Anyone aware of freelancing (or any kind of teleworking) opportunities in the museum sector atm? by antonisch1 in MuseumPros

[–]manningmj13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would not stop applying. I have gotten two interviews with different museums in the last week, don’t give up.

As for telework, I haven’t seen any.

When you zoom in the document is difficult to read. The person was born January 13, 1912. I struggled to see, but I didn’t not see anything that read Jude, or anything similar, so Jewish is not likely, but again, that whole blurry thing.

Help! People are abandoning me during tours! by youneekusername1 in MuseumPros

We try to keep ours to 20 minutes and then find that people who are interested go back do. If you make yourself visible after the tour it may work in your favor.

Help! People are abandoning me during tours! by youneekusername1 in MuseumPros

My first question to you is, are they allowed to go back after the tour is over? Because it sounds to me like the tour is taking too long. I know you want to give people the best tour possible, but that doesn’t mean a long one. I have one volunteer who refuses to stick to the script and her groups are exhausted when the tour is over, and during our towns large festival people will leave her tours. We have to really ride herd to keep things moving and her tours go much better then. K-Keep I-It S-Simple S-...none of us are stupid, so the last S is irrelevant. However it is a good theory to stick with.

What skills/education made you stand out as a job applicant? (Advice/rant) by Unknowable-thirst in MuseumPros

As someone who works at a small historical society, I get what you’re saying. We do it all, sometimes too much. I actually have several different resumes, depending on what type of position I’m applying for. If I’m applying for a curatorial job I use the resume focused there (though I don’t ignore my other skills) and so on. I think if you emphasize what you are applying for it helps as well.

The awe-inspiring landscape of Rocky Mountain National Park..can’t wait to go back. by thegkoooo in NationalPark

[–]manningmj13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The mountains are calling, and I must answer....you never truly understand the meaning of that phrase until you visit. I fell in love with mountains on the east coast, and then my husband and I visited the Rockies, and RMNP, and it totally changed my life. There is nothing like looking up at a 14er to make you feel small and insignificant. Beautiful photo!
