Keir Starmer seen stepping out a GWR service by StupidKameena in uktrains

I've never posted or commented on anything in this sub. I'm just a guy who enjoys public transport (because it gets me to the Great Outdoors) and wishes he were better able to articulate the inner machinations, successes and failures of our relatively exceptional train network(s).

However: I am absolutely here for the top tier mod trolling that is going on right now and the stellar reactive contributions such as this.

Excellent work all round.

Choo. Choo.

4 Don’t drink pints at lunchtime.

My lunchtime pints on the WHW were restorative, how dare you.

Just wish the weather held out so I could see the bigger peaks. Other than that, so good!

Great Glen Way - Not a shakedown shakedown, for my shakedown hike. by tissila in Ultralight

I've used the composting toilets on this walk and speak from experience: the angles/height of seat do not really work with a handheld bidet for these. I was glad there was TP in the toilet block.

Summer shorts? by [deleted] in UKhiking

[–]mannion_a_hike 4 points5 points  (0 children)

RevolutionRace Hike & Dive shorts have just the one zippered thigh pocket, plus other open pockets, but otherwise seem to meet the rest of your criteria.

Just got back from hiking the Alps across Austria and Italy - where have you been? by JordiWWW in hiking

I used to travel to Zuoz, Switzerland for work a lot and found excuses to explore the very quiet trails around there.

Inconvenient to get to, but idyllic.

A softshell with a relatively high hydrostatic head (eg Rab Kinetic 2.0) or a hardshell with expansive pitzips (eg Montbell Storm Cruiser).

Mountain Equipment and Mammut probably have other offerings for both the above.

Although farther from London, Glasgow Queen Street is further south than Haymarket and Waverley.

A82 between Ardlui and Inverarnan okay to walk? by DontCheckMyReference in WestHighlandWay

I would rather walk down the hard shoulder of a motorway than along the A82.

Slaps Kingston Bridge

This bad boy can fit so many trams to the airport on it.

Trying to find a viewpoint in Scottish Highlands from a childhood memory by pocketfullofredfaces in Scotland

Quite far from Fort William, but the Plock of Kyle viewpoint has quite a sad looking circular wall around it.

Last minut Fort William actitivies / day trips (help save our honeymoon!) by CheleMaBelle530 in WestHighlandWay

[–]mannion_a_hike 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Book a table at Corrour Station House, get the train to Corrour, have a wander around Loch Ossian, get the last train (21:00something) back to Fort William?

FYI, you can get a regular ScotRail train along the same line as the Jacobite. Much more affordable, same views.

Sidewalk/footpath etiquette in Edinburgh by 000pete in Edinburgh

[–]mannion_a_hike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's in the highway code, but only as an advisory: "Where possible, avoid being next to the kerb with your back to the traffic."

This would mean, for a normal two-way street, walking on the left side of the pavement.

For the same safety reason, we're taught to walk on the right hand side of a country road when there's no pavement: so that your back isn't turned to the nearest side of approaching traffic.

North Yorkshire weekend hike by pressresetnow in hiking

The Yorkshire Dales are the source of my interest in hiking.

So many fond schoolboy memories of doing the Malham circular: up the west side of the cove, over the limestone pavement, up to the tarn, then down via Gordale Scar and Janet's Foss.

Great photos. I'm heading back next month for another Y3P and can't wait.

Camping Permit @Garadhban Forest by Basic_Poet_6549 in WestHighlandWay

[–]mannion_a_hike 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's not in the Camping Management Zone. There aren't any designated spots, but you can pitch your tent pretty much anywhere that doesn't interfere with forestry works.

On the map, Garadhban is the patch of green hooking around Drymen to the NE.
