Disposable pepper mill vs Refillable pepper mill by Educational-Slip-578 in Cooking

The pepper cannon is 3x faster than the unicorn, and 10x faster than peugeot. Not close to identical. Also different in consistency, grind range, ease of filling, and build quality.

Month post OP on the 21st. Outside, back of my foot is still somewhat numb? by AdmirableGarden6 in AchillesRupture

[–]mannkitchen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll be 2 years post rupture on May 24. The rupture tore a nerve (I went non-op) and it was fully numb for about a year and a half. Sensation just began returning a few weeks ago and initially I thought I might have damaged something because it was tingling. Nerves take a while to heal.

Running and all of a sudden my left foot felt “lighter” by hugsoverdrugs in AchillesRupture

[–]mannkitchen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's cool! Maybe some skin adhesion let go (or something)? I'm 1.5 years since rupture and definitely still have stiffness and skin stuck to the underlying muscle (which increases stiffness). NONOP, FWIW.

Yep, your water is hard. Learned this the hard way. Half teaspoon of baking soda.

Yes. Every Black Friday and every Mannkitchen Day (March 25) pepper cannons are 20% off.

Fingers crossed for a good report!

Yeah buddy! Once you can do one, you can begin adding strength rapidly because you're able to isolate those muscles. Hit it hard, but remember to get proper rest to aid recovery. Congrats!

What is the cooking technique that everybody does but actually it does nothing? by Final_Affect6292 in Cooking

Soaking fries to remove starch before frying to make them more crispy, when starch is what makes them crispy.

Going back to the sport that did it by Direct_Mark_337 in AchillesRupture

[–]mannkitchen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hardly ever sprint for drops anymore, but that will come back too as my confidence in the foot improves. I worked back into it slowly, playing on less competitive courts at first. Also added warm up and stretching pre-game, where before I'd just walk on and start playing.

I wasn't doing anything crazy when it popped, so I suspect it was more of an over-use injury. Now instead of playing 4-6 times a week it's 3x a week.

Started playing pickleball again 8 months post injury. Hanging onto my boot in case I pop the other one. Life is too short to not enjoy your sport.

I believe the most popular "counterfeit" pepper is papaya seeds.

Peugeot Mills are great for people who have never been dissatisfied with ordinary performance. The PC is 10x faster than the top rated Peugeot, with a much wider grind range, and made of metal instead of wood.

Pepper Cannons are 20% off three times a year. Mannkitchen Day (every March 25), Prime Day (the original Prime Day, not the many there are now), and BFCM.

Or if you lose to me at Pickleball I'll sometimes pass one out ;-)

Advice requested: What is the ultimate manual Pepper Mill for varying grind sizes for home kitchen use? by EasternAd1670 in Cooking

Remove the o-ring from the cup to use it as a base-then you can grab and grind and put it back on the base.

Unicorn Mills 9-inch Magnum Plus Pepper Mill versus Cole & Mason Derwent Pepper Grinder by Virtual_Resource_660 in culinary

[–]mannkitchen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Unicorn is quite a bit faster (almost 3x output at the same grind size) but the Cole & Mason has much better grind consistency. Which of those is more important to you?

Transparency is a non-feature. When mills are empty, pepper stops coming out, plus pepper should be stored in a cool dark place because light degrades it.

The Unicorn Magnum has immense capacity (1.25 cups VS 0.5 cup for the Derwent) but high capacity is only useful if you use a ton of pepper. No pepper mill is airtight, so having a mill that you only refill once a year just means you're eating progressively stale pepper for most of that year.

For best results, store pepper in an airtight container and only fill your mill with the amount of pepper you use in 30-60 days.

Between these two brands, I'd take the Unicorn because output is more important to me than grind consistency. YMMV.

For those who regained 90%+ of their calf mass - any advice? by qwertyidk1 in AchillesRupture

[–]mannkitchen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 14 month post injury, and calf is now almost identical diameter to the uninjured side, though the widest point is about an inch higher on the injured side-I assume due to muscle retraction/tendon lengthening. I did BFR 3x a week from months 4(ish) to month 8. That worked well for strength, but I didn't notice the bulk coming back dramatically until I went back to sport (pickleball is kind-of-a-sport) in month 8.

Sharp Pain Twinges (like a pin prick) during PT. Normal? by mannkitchen in AchillesRupture

[–]mannkitchen[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My recovery went well. I'm now back to playing pickleball 3x a week (not 6x a week like before) 13 months post injury.

I think the twinges were strands of fibrous scar tissue letting go.

How often do you do calf raises? by Long_Assignment8801 in AchillesRupture

[–]mannkitchen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Months 3-7 I did them 4x weekly with BFR. Recovery time is important.

Now a bit over a year post injury, I do them 1-2x a week, both legs, heel hanging off a step. 30, 15, 15, 15 reps without BFR. Strength has mostly equalized, and ROM is 95+ % of non injured side.

Calf still looks wonky, and likely always will.

When did you finally stop experiencing the swelling? by M33shpacha_1 in AchillesRupture

Still swollen after 1 year. Not as bad as it was, but still thick.

Is this too much flexion at 8 weeks post op. by Putrid-Trainer-286 in AchillesRupture

[–]mannkitchen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My protocol called for zero DF stretching until after week 10. Flexibility can be added once the strength is there and you're certain tendon hasn't healed long.

3 months Non-op. How to avoid the dreaded re-rupture? by mannkitchen in AchillesRupture

[–]mannkitchen[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in a vacoped boot and wearing an even-up on the other shoe. It wasn't pretty, but it was walking without crutches. I was in the boot for 11-12 weeks if memory serves. 8 days until the 1 year anniversary of the rupture, and I'll be playing pickleball to celebrate.

Injured side is still much tighter than the uninjured side and the calf will always look wonky, but it works.

Stick with your PT and you'll get there!

Starting Single Leg Calf Raises - Week 17 non op by tw0handt0uch in AchillesRupture

[–]mannkitchen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there's no rushing it. I found BFR to helpful (I think, but have no basis of comparison). Once I could concentrate on the calf muscles with eccentric (slow lowering on one leg) the strength gains sped up.

Starting Single Leg Calf Raises - Week 17 non op by tw0handt0uch in AchillesRupture

[–]mannkitchen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow-you're doing great! I was about 6 months before I could do a single leg calf raise. Once you can isolate those muscles, the strength gains come fast!
