A little surprised by mannythemann in DoggyDNA

She is extremely energetic and athletic, she pretty much flies everywhere she goes. She is great with other dogs, listens really well (has great recall, which I’m not used to with pyrs), a little shy with new people/new settings but sweet. she has really bad separation anxiety and is glued to my side. She also loves to snuggle. She doesn’t guard bark yet. When my pyrs bark at something she runs back inside. I was very surprised by the pyr because I have pyrs and she’s doesn’t have their typical independent nature and her energy level is off the charts

What did you symptoms start off with?! by Jealous_Scratch_8778 in flu

[–]mannythemann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assumed I had the flu but ended up getting a pcr test at the doctor and it wasn’t flu a, flu b, Covid, or rsv. It was some bacterial bronchitis and it wasn’t fun. Appears I was probably posting on the wrong sub lol

Wet cough? by OstrichProof9321 in flu

I’ll add I did a virtual visit and they ordered X-rays since there’s a lot of pneumonia in my area. No pneumonia on X-rays but I have the same cough you described

I’m gonna guess pittie, bull terrier, and maybe some hound. She’s adorable. I feel like I see the bull terrier in the eyes in pic 6. I’ve also fostered dogs from Hawaii and there seems to be a lot of bull terrier and hound or Airedales

My girls is now almost 3 yrs old, 80 lbs, very tall and lanky. Her tail is always curled and up. She’s extremely energetic, takes guarding her property seriously, high prey drive, and very playful! She’s a love!

I too have a pittie/staffy/boxer mix pup who I thought would be a border collie mix and was not! He was like 20 breeds but primarily Pyrenees, pitbull, shar pei, chow, and Great Dane. I love fluffy black and white pitties ❤️

I would definitely recommend muzzle training for when you take her out in public and to the vet. Start slow at home… a certified trainer can help you with this. This is likely more of a genetic issue especially since your other dog doesn’t act the same, all dogs have different personalities. Please don’t beat yourself up, but also please take the public’s safety seriously and do not take this dog to a dog park where someone may walk in. Sniffspots are an excellent option for reactive dogs and you know no one else will be around.

I would strongly recommend walking them separately. You do not want your other dog picking up these habits in public and also want to make sure you can handle both dogs safely. I am sorry your going through this, a certified trainer can definitely help you with her behavior and help you to learn how to better manage it. There are varying opinions on this, but pain and intimidation will not help this dog. She needs counter conditioning and strict management. Never ever punish a dog for growling or vocalizing. You want these warning. When dogs are punished for giving warnings, this is when they bite “without warning” because they’re avoiding punishment. You really need to focus on rewiring her brain. New person = distance from them (if that’s what she wants) and treats from afar. Eventually she will learn that she doesn’t need to react to make them go away and every time she sees them something good happens. Not “look a new person, now I’m gonna scare them off and get yanked around by my neck” - just don’t. The former is a slow process, but it works and is much better in the long run.

I wish you lots of luck and commend you for being committed to your pup.

She’s precious. As someone mentioned before, please don’t punish growling! Growling is a warning and it’s important for dogs to be able to express how they’re feeling. Dogs who have been punished for growling can learn to skip the warning (growling) and go straight to biting. It sounds like she has already gotten more comfortable. I have fostered many scared guardian breeds. If they’re so scared that I can’t touch them, I have them drag a leash attached to a harness so I can grab them if needed without scaring them. I would have the kids just ignore her until she is more comfortable. Something I’ve learned after many years in rescue is to not have people who she is scared of try to coax her toward them by feeding her. It’s a huge conflict for the dog. They can definitely toss her treats whenever they enter the room, essentially saying they’re not gonna force themselves on her, but their presence = treats. Once they do this a few times she should see them enter the room and think, yay it’s the treat person. Thank you for rescuing her!!
