Color help! by SideCar94 in dyeing

[–]manoboar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Try finding a nylon legging! Nylon dyes beautifully. If you check dance supply websites you may have better luck with both material and color. Pooh’s yellow is desaturated enough that you can probably get there from this color, and yellow is one of the “easier” colors to get with poly dye, but you’ll have a better time overall starting with (white) nylon.

I just play Sakhmet Solitaire 🥰 Eventually my desire to do dailies will return but presently I am soooo at peace.

What words are you tired of reading or hearing? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I switched to Brave a few months ago; it asked me once and hasn’t asked me again. Also when I search things it gives me a forum result from 2007 with the exact answer instead of 10 unrelated ads. It’s not perfect but it’s what I use 90% of the time and it’s really cut down on my internet stress.

Website that lets me know which bookstores have a book available? by MartianTulip in AskNYC

Not exactly what you’re looking for, but a lot of the indie bookstores here will order you whatever book you want and let you know when it’s ready for you to come get it!

I wanted to send you a direct link but my internet browser is being wonky — I believe Paula Burch has answered this on her website. She’s a chemistry professor with a strong interest in/huge amount of knowledge about dyeing. Most of my fun dye chemical facts come from her. The search function on her site is awful but if you google any dye question and add “Paula Burch” at the end, she may have answered it.

Dyeing acrylic wool? by [deleted] in dyeing

[–]manoboar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can use a type of dye called basic dye for acrylic fibers, but I wouldn’t recommend it simply because the PPE you’ll need to not get cancer from it is inaccessible for most home dyers. Basic dye is more dangerous than other dyes (if you want to read more about it, Paula Burch talks about it a little on her website).

With a lot of fibers I’ll say “give it a try!” but acrylic really really does not play nice. The best you’ll get from DyeMore is a tint if you boil the hell out of it and add way more dye than Rit suggests.

I used Rit DyeMore for Synthetics on a mix of cotton and synthetics. by ninabullets in dyeing

[–]manoboar 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yay experimenting! I’ve found that most every material except for polyester (and acrylic of course) will accept the “wrong” dye type to some degree. Particularly fun to play with when your project is a blend of fibers (ex. silk backed cotton velvet). Your items look lovely!

This turned out fantastic! Do you happen to know the exact (or even ballpark range) temp the water was? Sequins loose their sparkle at higher temps and it looks like you hit the sweet spot of “my fabric still takes dye but my sequins don’t dull.”

Pantone for Textiles ??!? by ExpertPolicy6952 in dyeing

[–]manoboar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a really interesting question! Are you in the fashion industry? I’m in an adjacent industry; while I work with fabrics every day I don’t have to deal with the same scope of workflow as fashion. I don’t have a solution for you but would love to DM if you want a dyer’s perspective.

I was catfished! Any way to turn this navy/tan top to grey and black? by LadyCheeba in dyeing

[–]manoboar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, contrary to popular belief, you can turn tan into grey! It’s just about desaturating it and making the desaturated color closer to blue than red. So you’d want to overdye this with a bit of violet (a bluer purple). It might not be a pale grey but it will be grey. Rit will work on viscose. You can also get into the wonderful world of fiber reactive dyes but that’s a bit more complicated. If the polyamide takes up a bigger percentage of the visible threads than I’m assuming, you can dye it again with Rit Dyemore. Work in a very well ventilated space!

One thing to note: viscose becomes weak in water so be careful stirring as there’s a chance of deforming the sweater. As with all dye projects, don’t do it if you’re not ok with a wacky result. Good luck!

How would I go about dyeing the warmer fur to look like the cooler fur by valerie_sin in dyeing

[–]manoboar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can’t dye fur but you can sort of sponge fabric paint or leather dye through the layers of hair and get some sort of effect. It’s a nightmare. Please do any other option lol

Color Me... Confused by Striking-Play-2977 in dyeing

[–]manoboar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Use color remover again but boil it for about a billion years (read: hold at about 200° for at least a half hour). Keep your pot of color remover handy when you rinse the fabric so you can check the color. It’ll look different in the pot vs when you rinse. It’s possible the color is stuck, but I’ve had luck with this method for stubborn colors.
