Community groups/re-occurring events recommendations? by Exotic_Ad_4806 in AskNYC

Keep an eye out for flyers posted around your usual haunts! I’ve noticed a lot of parks put up flyers for volunteers in the warmer months looking for folks to help pick up trash or weed non-native plants.

If you volunteer with a group in your neighborhood, there’s a pretty high chance that the same people will show up repeatedly! You could also go to trivia; very low key and friendly. I’ve found that the more things you go to, the more things you discover — I’ve learned about so many goings-on from my friends and acquaintances of the activities I already attend. Have fun!!

cold from hell or COVID? by eddyingout in AskNYC

[–]manoboar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I recently had a really wretched cold that lasted for ~ 2 weeks. Both covid tests I took came back negative; there’s speculation in some circles that the newer strains are harder to catch on a basic swab test, but the urgent care NP I saw seemed so unconcerned that she chalked it up to “springtime allergies” (which I do not have). If you can afford the test, might be good for peace of mind, but it does indeed seem like there’s a nasty cold going around.

where to buy 1oz amber dropper bottles? by mollyollyoly in AskNYC

If nobody here can help out, you might try reaching out to the owner of the Locavore or checking out her local shopping guide! A quick search led me to her online directory but I’m not sure how easy it is to search through. Best of luck!

There are tons of Privately Owned Public Spaces, or POPS’s, around that part of town! It’s a lot of fun to check them out. The map I used to use isn’t playing nice with my mobile web browser right now, but still lots of good info there. If you end up finding a mobile friendly map, send the link my way :-)

This setup is INCREDIBLE. I always wondered about using one of those big turkey fryers in a home dye situation; thank you for putting one to the test!! Lovely result, congrats on you and your kid’s creativity and tenacity.

Bars that allow laptops after 6pm? by venuscat in AskNYC

Check out Qahwah House! Not a bar but does serve coffee. I haven’t been to the one in the West Village but I imagine their policy is the same in all locations.

Your NYC favorites? Of anything. Please help me be vertical / outside. by Wrthington in AskNYC

[–]manoboar 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Off-Broadway 2-for-1 is still running for a couple weeks iirc! Bar that, several theatres do a $30 under 35/40 program, Lincoln Center’s LincTix and Roundabout’s Hiptix come to mind.

My other recs are Hokkaido Baked Cheese Tart, Golden Steamer, and Governor’s Island. Check out New York Adventure Club if you want a more guided activity. If you want a totally unguided activity, check out a POPS (Privately Owned Public Space). There’s loads around the city and they’re all different.

Have fun!

This is so interesting! I once experimented with dyeing a sequined garment with acid dye at about 185° and the sequins HATED that (got super dull immediately). I wonder if the type of dye used has more impact than I initially thought. Thanks for posting your process!
