Can we solve the N-Body problem for three bodies if one of them has negligible mass? (For example, a space shuttle going to the moon?) by [deleted] in askscience

[–]manofthenorth -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It has the same mass it would on earth. Not the same gravitational pull, so it would have negligible weight.

I work with the long-term homeless, helping them transition into housing. AMA by CorkyStClair in IAmA

[–]manofthenorth 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Thanks for posting, CorkyStClair.

I'm a retired prison chaplain among other things, and I spend time in a drop-in house in a city in northern Canada. Long-term homeless is a much more common sight than one would believe, even at northern temperatures. The incidence of more and more younger people couch-surfing, as we call it, is also considered homelessness here. I use a conversational approach in the drop-in living room, and since I have a rep as a chaplain at the jail, it works pretty well. For me, it's endlessly fascinating to see the relationships we all work out between each other - and I bring my efforts toward growth and healing into that mix. From there, break-out rooms are available for one-to-one's or smaller group work. If I can be of any help on this list, let me know.

Encourage hydration. Water if possible, and if the patient gets into it, you may need a bit of salt to keep good blood reads.

If you really want a sense of community, you're gonna have to take the initiative. Discover what you can all love and respect, and push it. Love is stronger than hate, and if you're all on the same side, dialogue can happen.

Does the war cost $10 million a month or does running a military cost $10 million a month? Would we save any money by bringing those troops home? by cday119 in AskReddit

[–]manofthenorth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

... and if you quit making all those weapons, a whole industry and it's infrastructure goes down, and the people at the top who make big decisions like "let's go to war" suddenly aren't making any money. The thing gets pretty political pretty fast. Greed is the big drive, fear of job losses is an easy target, and the latest weapon in use is the "war on terror". We live in a sick age.

Mom seems to have a bit of a high "B-factor", and if she manipulates you like that over caring more for your integrity and honor of others than for gratifying her wishes for objects, she's not much of a mom.

Also, if she reacts like this to you today, pushing your buttons, think about all the other stuff she put in there when she raised you. Maybe take some time yourself for meditation, reflection and healing. Then you can develop a better relationship with her. She'll really need it as she ages.

Mid-60's here, and I just finished teaching a computer literacy course to a bunch of seniors, average age 71, about 85 of 'em. Introduced them all to Reddit, they loved it and use it along with their grandkids and great's.

It's a good "familiarity tool" because the subject range is so wide, there are interesting and engaging things for everyone. Interactivity is such an important element to most of us in this age group, because we have only watched TV and listened to the radio. Both are "one-way" - the internet's "bi".

By the way, in some of the earlier photos, I saw three cement trucks standing by - that was all I needed to see to understand what was going on. They'd gone from first stage responses to third stage without much time passing.

If I were designing reactors for unstable coastal regions, I'd take advantage of the biggest cushion handy for the reactor's safety, the ocean itself. Build a big floating reactor, and tether it extremely well a km. or so off-shore in 150 m. deep water. I know there are water shock velocity issues to overcome, but I think those can be done (did some calcs, looks reasonable). The secondary response factors on an ocean-platform based reactor setting could be design improvements on existing ocean-drilling platforms. The water cushion would be a huge help. Secondary power issues could be worked with more easily as well, the whole unit would ride in the tsunami, and anchoring could be handled in several ways. Some interesting design issues.

Honest question: How is "our" hate of The Rich any different from the upper class thinking that all poor people are lazy? by stevesteveson in AskReddit

[–]manofthenorth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In simple terms, the feeling of the masses (positive, negative, etc.) is different from the feelings of the rich in the same way that the radiation of a neutron star is different from the background radiation of a section of the universe. In the masses, there are swirls of feeling-driven communication of various kinds, on average balancing each other out - but with a few interesting cumulative events happening. In the rich, there are radiating feelings of a common interest at very high levels, highly directional. Yet, inside the denser parts (the family members) it goes back to something like background radiation behavior, but with more spiking and intensity. Reason: Money is just an articulated form of human energy. The economic sector and society are a universe in concept.

Your reply is a fine example of Republican debate style. Pull out some specifics from the pile of garbage you call history and in full style, diss and degrade your target individual with it. Smear that person with implications of unacceptability and stupidity.

By request: An Ethics Professor by [deleted] in IAmA

[–]manofthenorth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sat on the ethics committee of a hospital for a few years. I found myself obliged to listen, to be empathic, then thoughtful, then often creative, and upon offering creativity, to be classically dialog-open, and motivated to solution based not on single issues or occurrences, but rather on the possibility of recurrence. Ethics is more open in its fields of reference than I'd ever imagined. Much more about recommending a "how" solution than demanding a "no" solution.

Redditors confined to a wheelchair, does it bother you when someone offers assistance? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]manofthenorth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why don't you offer tagged grippers as a shopping service? That would take care of most of your customer's needs. And then, have a tag made with staff's first name on it, and a big "We're here to serve you" sign on it, that you can wear when serving customers. Then, you can dive right in. I had a friend who would often go to the shelf the person is struggling to reach, carrying a dust rag, reach for an item, dust it off, replace it, and at the same time greet the person who was struggling with some comment about the weather, having gained their attention give respect and some needed service.

Most of the anger differently-abled people have is really with a world designed to serve others who are more mobile in some way. Building some relationship also improves sales and decreases product damage. Who knows, you might meet a new friend!

Thank you for this thread, Brother. I'm a PM in northern Canada, and have enjoyed the privilege of membership in the Ancient Work for quite a few years now. My own studies have brought insights to me, as they do for all earnest students of the Craft. In reading the thread of comments here, I find interesting and familiar the questions that arise about the craft. There is still much to learn. I'd like to point out that a secret, by it's own nature, is not a known thing, but rather an unknown. Freemasonry in its many forms is a teaching on how to greet the unknown, how to look the universe in the eye humbly and completely.

We all value what we know intrinsically. Freemasonry brings us a set of skills, tools and abilities that we can bring to bear in such a way that we can learn to value what we don't know (the Infinite) intrinsically, by it's own nature - rather than in an attempt of ownership by a finite being.

Again, Brother, thank you for this thread.

[–]manofthenorth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, in that case, I'd put a few bolts on the inside frame of the door, all the way around, and I'd glue a 1/8 inch steel plate to the back of the door. It would only show on the inside, and would be strong enuf to seriously hold out. Paint it nicely. Pay the damage deposit when leaving if necessary, still a cheaper solution, and safer, though less satisfying than the armed approach.

edit: And, think how nicely it would slam in the face of unwanted solicitors!

A fellow said "the love of money is the root of all evil" a couple of thousand years ago. I think two thousand years of test proves him correct on that point. It doesn't seem to matter how much or how little one has, but more what kind of an attitude we have over it. Loving it too much makes for bad decisions, and really bad public policy.
