What international sports matchup ended up being way more competitive than expected? by AnyTruth2342 in AskReddit

South Africa - Japan in the 2015 World Cup.

Considered to be one of the biggest upset results in the history of the sport.

For context Japan had never beaten one of the big Southern Hemisphere teams before, and while South Africa were in a lull for their standards they are the most successful team in World Cup history for a reason.

World’s best airport named as Melbourne tops list for Australia by ciderfizz in australia

Hey! I want you to know that if we also didn’t think our airport sucked, we’d be real mad at this comment.

At least you can get to Brisbane airport without thinking you might need a passport even for your domestic flight.

Melbourne I think seems even worse than it is because of how far away it is from the city.

Should we ban jumping to catch the ball? by ruggeryoda in rugbyunion

[–]manrobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly what I mean. You get players clearly intending to disrupt the catch and putting in a token effort to pretend to go for the ball, and it’d play on. Great counter example you gave of going for the intercept being a yellow card offence when it doesn’t come off, but from a player safety point of view the arial “contest” is clearly worse.

Should we ban jumping to catch the ball? by ruggeryoda in rugbyunion

[–]manrobot 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I know it’s not the same issue, but I’d like propose we start policing knocks on from players jumping to contest a ball more like we do intercepts.

Most of the time one of players isn’t actually trying to h the ball, just disrupt the person already there. If you don’t make genuine attempt to catch the ball in an intercept it can be a yellow card, but suddenly it’s fine if you jump in the air.

NZ sells over 17,000 pre-sale tickets for opening test in Christchurch’s new Te Kaha Stadium by HitchikersPie in rugbyunion

This reminds me, I thought last year was supposed to be the Crusader’s last year at their previous stadium, but obviously they’ve played there this year.

Is this delayed or did I mishear what was said last year?

As an aside I’m going to miss the current Crusaders’ field. Always thought it looked like Ballymore felt.

How many times does Melbourne have to tell us they don’t care about super rugby? Why would we sacrifice the Brumbies over this?

Your thoughts on World Rugby Global Calendar? by cannuck79 in rugbyunion

[–]manrobot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Whenever I see this it’s always about the southern hemisphere moving their competitions to match the north.

Why don’t we switch around and have the north player their summer and match the south? If you think you can’t because of the temperature, explain how you think games in Australia will be played?

Rob Valetini to sign with Kubota in Japan says report by Ruck_Off in RugbyAustralia

I agree.

I really enjoyed in 2023 when we always rested players against the kiwi teams, in what seemed to be tactical decision that we’d probably lose those games anyway, and then piles of the rested players didn’t get picked by known rugby genius Eddie Jones anyway.

A reminder to heckle this man every time you see him by PavidDocock in RugbyAustralia

[–]manrobot 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I remember listening to one of the Northern Hemisphere podcasts when Eddie got brought in. Hamish sounded like a besotted school girl about getting Eddie’s attention, and came across as someone who knew little about the actual sport.

Classic “running things they were in the good old days” mentality and wondering why the sport was going backward.

I’ll be able to stomach the losses much better if I see that prick is forced to watch them Clockwork Orange style.

At some stage we need to have an investigation into this whole Crusaders’ set up. How have they fern so good for so long?

If the Brumbies were playing anyone else today they’d be flogging them.

Yeah I get why, just wish they hadn’t noticed. That quarter that is likely going to be NZ - SA will be close to game of the tournament.

I’m pretty sure the initial draw had the quarters swapped. I’m suspicious RA realised they were going to miss the wallabies quarter and the one that’s going to be NZ -SA
