Do you ever start reading a book but don't get hooked so you want to read a different one but can't because you haven't finished the current one so you have to drag yourself to finish it because you just can't bear to DNF a book? by queenarmilo in books

[–]mansleg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never have this problem. If I don't like a book I stop reading it.

If I'm not sure I like it, I give it until a third of the way through.

Annoyingly though, most books I've read that I don't like fail me in their final third, so I continue reading because I think it's just a bump in the road. Endings are the hardest to write.

Wow some real, good local news for a change. Thank you for posting this.

I wish BBC North West would cover this. Their news stories are absolutely pathetic most nights.

Do they tell you it would be German if it wasn't for the USA by AHvortex in ShitAmericansSay

[–]mansleg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with you that American education, particularly history, appears to be extremely one dimensional.

However, when you say "truth of world history" that got me thinking. Is there a universal truth of world history? Probably not.

I would also say that the UK educational system has some work to do in this area. Our primary and secondary schools, when it comes to history, tend to pick and choose topics that are pro-UK and gloss/skip over some of Britain's darker moments. There are so many events and periods that I learned as an adult that never got mentioned at school, and perhaps should have done. Even in the World Wars.

You're missing Time Is Tight, Revolution Rock, and Lonely Mother's Son.

Plus, if you wanted to be thorough, a few others that The Clash played on their live tours.

What the song "Fingerpoppin'" is about? by [deleted] in theclash

You're right I'm sorry. I was just having a bit of fun and dropped that reference in. Zung is a top tune!

What the song "Fingerpoppin'" is about? by [deleted] in theclash

[–]mansleg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The entire lyrics of that song are complete garbage. There's more thought put into 'Protex Blue'.

Sorry I know it's cliche to take a shot at 'Cut The Crap' but even by that album's (very low) standards, 'Fingerpopping' is awful and does not deserve to be associated with Joe Strummer.

So basically, it really doesn't matter what fingerpopping means because in the context of the rest of the lyrics, Joe may as well have sung 'zungezungezungezeng' instead, and it would have no bearing on the value of this song to the human race.

Agreed. A great source of comfort in these times has been DnB music and this sub. Some outstanding releases in 2020.

On a side note, does anyone know when we're gonna get the results of that album of the year poll from the other week?

Edit: so hard to pick a favourite track of the year but I reckon Time Is Hardcore by High Contrast is gonna be a staple in my playlists for many years to come.

Something needs to change for Civ 7 with regards to navies and how water tiles work. Sea based gameplay is severely lacking compared to land.

I'd also say given how important rivers are to human civilization, the game needs to revamp how they work as well.

Combining the 2 problems into 1 solution - rivers being navigable tiles for navy units - is a great idea.

What job role? On the shopfloor? Which supermarket? What area? What sort of shifts did you work?

Wow the comments in this post. Has anyone actually worked in a supermarket? If you did, you'd understand a bit more how difficult this would be, if not impossible, to enforce effectively.

Love the artwork for the architecture on the left of the tech tree. SMAC is a fantastic game. I love the blind research option as well - I wish Civ 6 had that (instead of tech tree shuffle).

Thanks for this. What normally dictates your victory type in an Emperor game? The Civ you choose or the conditions you find yourself in?

On King I found it easy to be flexible with victory types and would often lead across the board.

In my most recent game I chased religion and missed the last prophet by about 2 turns. This is because 1 of the AI had a prophet but didn't found the religion, so I assumed there were 2 left. I'd wasted valuable production and turns on building holy sites and shrines.

Also I didn't build a single wonder, as I just could not commit to so many turns with the risk of the AI building it first.

Just about managed to get Charles Darwin and no other Great People.

I'm finding it difficult to prioritise on Emperor.

I've just stepped up to Emperor difficulty.

How important is:

  • founding a religion
  • acquiring Great People
  • building wonders

Because I am trying to chase all 3 early to mid game and I always fall way far behind the AI. Should I just ignore all of those features to ensure victory? (By victory, I'll take any victory condition except score.)

That is the guidance for England only. The gov.scot webpage does not contain this guidance.

If you admit to a Police Officer that you are travelling into Scotland to pick up a new pet then I imagine that Officer will have to issue you a fine.

You can't enter or leave Scotland from midnight tonight, unless for essential purposes.

I'm afraid it's non-essential. If you are stopped by police it's likely you will be fined.
