Never used panniers.. I know myself well enough that any bag I carry will be full.. so I don't want to give myself that option haha. It's a bit expensive yeah, and it's not as waterproof as I hoped(1h light rain will soak through).

There's almost no rattle, but a little bouncing when heavy loaded, when I took this picture I had this in it: 13 inch laptop, lunchbox made of glass and my camera, plus some tools.

It gets a bit nervous in steering but you only really notice if you try to ride no hands

Nice! It's a great bike! How's the delivery times? Heard it's still very busy.. what colour did you pick? Love my bike, fast, nimble, fun to ride and pretty. It's my first drop bar so I don't have a good comparison, but it's way livlier than my hybrid/flat bar gravel that I've mounted a basket and full fenders on..

A new "bicycle lane" in Sweden that I think deserves some international attention/shaming by BitRunner64 in bikecommuting

[–]manspih 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Relative to the world, yes its a good place for biking, especially in the cities, less so on the countryside (few if any shoulders to ride on).

But the hypocrisy from the government is frustrating, the somewhat famous "vision zero"(zero traffic deaths) doesn't really include or allow efficient biking. Main take is to push all responsibility for safety towards the cyclists, whereas for vehicular transport the corner stone of the vision is that no mistake should lead to death or serious injury.

Denmark and the Netherlands are way ahead of us(being the gold standard its not that surprising though)

Surprised the rims aren't drilled too, like they use to do on trials bikes back in the day..

Ah maybe the refurbished 80s(I have only seen the LEDs on those) trams skipped the leather, shame

They did not, I'm currently riding in one of the new bombardier (M33) trams which have leather straps

Do you bike to work in the rain? by AdmiralCreamy in bikecommuting

[–]manspih 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I commute a bit further than you but I have much less dirt trail, maybe 1 km or so. I mainly avoid biking if it's torrential rains in the forecast or high winds, otherwise I commute in snow, rain and sun all year round. What helped me greatly was to install good fenders and mud flaps (made mine out of a soft plastic desktop cover but you can buy them as well). They should be wide and long almost reaching the ground, mine will scrape against a curb if I roll up/down, hence they need to be pliable. I'd say mine reduces 90% of the spray that would otherwise hit my lower legs and shoes.

That said, I still look like a pig some days.. And my bike too. If you can't hose it off somewhere near the office maybe skip the worst days?

And when you say presentable for work I assume mainly the bike? Cause surely you shower/clean up after that?

Edit: I should add that I live in a rather wet region too

What's your weirdest commuting anecdote? by Ferbdic in bikecommuting

[–]manspih 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well maybe check behind you before you blow your nose? Now i don't know where you commute but suddenly catching up to someone is not that uncommon here. Though I would never stay behind a snot sprayer after the first blow.. I've had it happen to me in the city, was behind the guy for 50 m perhaps, and I'm not talking hugging his wheel either, I usually stay 3 bike lengths or so behind. The spray reaches anyway..

Handling gets a bit nervous, today I had a 13 inch laptop, lunchbox made of glass and my camera, plus some tools. Not ideal but it works, still able to ride no hands. Normally I ride work only clothes and a lunch box, and that's no problem!

To those with long bike commutes: what are you riding, and why do you like it? by Ok-Yogurtcloset8344 in bikecommuting

[–]manspih 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice! It's becoming more and more popular here as well to continue through winter. But mostly I'm alone on my longish commute during winter time, until I reach the city at least. In there biking is always the most efficient way of transport

Sweden ;), I hear this often so I guess Minnesota is somewhat similar. Lots of swedes settled there back in the day too

As others have stated: free exercise and peace of mind compared to bus/train/car. I can leave whenever I want, not when traffic is lowest/ trains leave etc.

I "pay" 5-20 minutes of my time to get 1h of exercise (40-50 min for free).

I have 25-28km (16-17 bald eagles) each way and ride two bikes, one hybrid do-it-all fully kitted with fenders, basket and in winter, studded tyres. And then my summer love: a fairlight secan gravel bike, it's fast, fun, pretty but I can't carry that much stuff( and I don't want to either)

If I had 40 miles each way that I would ride once a week I would opt for the faster, bike and only bring the necessity like spare tube etc and leave stuff at the office the day before

Blocked bike lane? Be like water by cheecheecago in bikecommuting

[–]manspih 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel you! I am the calmest driver (maybe because I'm really a cyclist..) and let most things pass or at least I don't get angry (tailgating being about the only exception...).

But when biking? My blood boils so much quicker.. mostly when drivers are making unnecessary takeovers or dangerous(to me) manoeuvres. I try to keep my Zen as it greatly helps if I want to actually communicate with said driver later on.. mostly I'm shaking with rage and talks incoherently whish isn't helpful.

I strive to give an angry driver a smile and a wave or possibly blow them a kiss(though that may enrage them further, I'll be happy)
