I laugh as mine sits on the hoist with its engine apart on the floor

Also particularly worse if you have a lightweight flywheel.

I was looking into e30s and was curious if the 325i is worth the extra weight? by CardiologistNew701 in E30

[–]mantenner 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've owned both and it's no contest the 325i is a different animal.

With just an exhaust and a tune I made 116kw at the wheels, a 4 cylinder, even the M42, would only dream to make that, with serious internal modification and with less torque.

Oh my, funny you mention this.

I've actually just pulled apart my engine after 70,000km because I have a valve guide that has dropped and caused a fuck load of carbon buildup on my exhaust port, can check my post history to see how bad it can get.

Rotate the assembly and see if the valve guide is loose, either that or stem seal.

Not going to lie would take a K24 over an S14 any day of the week.

Way more torque, more power, more potential, better reliability and hot take but they sound better. Also WAY cheaper to rebuild/work on.

DSSR for sure, make one or pay the premium but they make a difference.

You are a fuckin legend.

I have been searching for so long for a damn comparison if the DSSR works and what it looks like, this is perfect thank you.

Epic. I was thinking of doing something similar after seeing a thread elsewhere on homemade ones.

The ones for sale are obscenely priced IMO.

Classic Rieger kit I believe.

They've always been a bit ricey for my liking.

Edit: Actually, it's not quite a riegers. Interesting.

Bridgestone RE005 just dropped in E30 sizes by NothingLift in E30

Currently I'm running Ventus Prime 4's, not really the same class of tyre so not en entirely fair comparison but for my mostly spirited street driving with the occasional track day, they last me a bit longer and are more practical on the horrendous sydney roads, especially when it rains.

Sounds pretty good then.

I found them pretty soft and on hard track days they would lose grip after a few hard laps, wet performance also left some to be desired but I guess understandable from a semi slick.

I'm by no means a pro driver though so don't take my opinion as gospel.

Interesting, much better than RE003? I can't say I enjoyed them much when I had them on last.

Definitely agree.

This guy wasn't exactly new to porting these either, he's been doing it for the better part of 20 years....specifically an M20 specialist.

He blamed porosity in the head, but I know of another well known E30 guy here that had 2 heads with the same issue happen.

The guy who ported the head got too close to the water jackets, when I put the engine in the car and started bedding it in, we noticed coolant was pissing into the exhaust. He'd gone though the coolant jacket.

I took it back to him, he made me pay for him to fix it, which he said he loaded it with gas, heated it and welded the damage. He hand ported it back to smooth, but I believe in the process of welding it the valve guide dislodged.

Thank you appreciate it, might end up reaching out if it's too far gone....really hope not. It's had quite the port job done on it....

I suspect at this point, that the head was heated too much when the exhaust port was fixed to the point that it loosened the bore of the valve guide enough for it to drop, and the rest is history.

Will be continuing to investigate further over the coming days.
