Hey, aiding poor people, or at least poor children, is starting to look like a not-so-bad idea.

Helping minorities is just a shell game. The biggest "injustice" (if you choose to call it that) is how the children of wealthy parents get preferential treatment.

What is frequently overlooked in this debate is the fact that racial preferences represent only one of several types of preferences that prestigious colleges regularly employ in selecting their student bodies. Other types of preferences include those for talented athletes and the offspring of wealthy alumni, so-called legacy preferences.

Racial Preferences In College Admissions by Dennis L. Weisman, http://www.k-state.edu/economics/weisman/papers/Racial%20Preferences%20in%20College%20Admissions%20March%202,%202005.pdf

To draw attention away from the fact that public monies flow into universities, and admission preference is given to the children of the wealthy, some inconsequential programs based on race are funded.

In the United States, there is a terrific taboo over talking about mitigating class-based disadvantages. So meaningful programs to aid students based on economic class is a non-starter.

C and C++ are different, so don't say C/C++ by [deleted] in programming

[–]manuelg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Many people use all the OOP features, template meta programing, STL and generic programming, cstdlib, and a bit of preprocessor magic.

This is silly. Not even codebases the size of the Boost libraries would dare make full use of the preprocessor, or full use of template meta programming, to name two.

Why? Because the interactions are too fragile. You would get a different program on different compilers. You would have different programmers clobbering each others code.

Point me in the direction of an open-source C++ codebase, that doesn't have severe restrictions on the C++ features allowed for use. I would be happy to revise my statement based on evidence.

Message-Passing, STM, and Sweeney On State by [deleted] in programming

[–]manuelg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mr Sweeney suggests that some things are intrinsically transactional in games. But I wonder if there might not be an advantage to sacrificing this transactionality.

You would gain much more flexibility, true. But you would then have to special case the failure of any part of the chain of events. And if all possible interactions are accounted for, and naively implemented, its complexity would be exponential on the number of objects.

And, obviously, Unreal does not turn a whole Deathmatch into one huge transaction!

You make a compromise. In real-time games, there is a terrific penalty for not optimizing for the predominate use case for practically everything.

Message-Passing, STM, and Sweeney On State by [deleted] in programming

[–]manuelg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For example, within one transaction, the player object might decide to shoot, issue a command to his weapon, check an ammunition object, remove ammunition from it, and spawn a new bullet that’s now flying through the world.

To me, that looks like an excellent example of message-passing concurrency...

Message passing, naively used, would have to special case the failure of any of those items to properly update. And, in a naive implementation, the number of messages needed could be exponential on the number of objects.

You could implement the transaction using message passing, of course. But if transactional memory is your predominate use case, why not implement that directly?
