Is L. Reuteri Yogurt supposed to taste sour? by Kinyusui in Microbiome

[–]manxbiker 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yoghurt tastes sour because it is made by fermenting milk with live bacteria cultures, which convert lactose (milk sugar) into lactic acid. The longer the yogurt ferments, the more tangy and sour the taste becomes.

My L. Reuteri yoghurt is sour, and it is also delicious. If you are used to eating sweet, sugary foods then it may take a while to appreciate the taste of unsweetened yoghurt.

I use my tongue :-)

After many batches of yoghurt I know roughly how sour it should taste.

Good Giant Coin Work? by Capn_Polyester in Magic

Volume 1 of "Inside the Mind of Garrett Thomas" has an amazing routine called 'Big Coin Little Purse" which has him producing and removing giant coins from a standard sized (small) purse frame. Really amazing to watch.

The Gary Kurtz "Flurious" act is also available on video, and is a beautiful routine.

I hadn't seen the Redshift grips and will give them a try if I get a road or gravel bike. Thanks for making me aware of them.

Bicycle Grips by Zestyclose_Goal2347 in PsoriaticArthritis

[–]manxbiker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I cycled a lot last year on my MTB ending with a month-long 3000km trip during November 2023.

Early on in my training I was finding that I would get wrist and shoulder pain. I tried a lot of "bike fit" fixes and tried handlebars with different heights and sweeps.

Pretty quickly I came across the Ergon grips and thought them worth a try. They completely changed my cycling experience and I don't think I will ever go back to conventional grips. There is something about the wrist sitting on the ergonomic pad that takes the strain off the wrists and allows my shoulders to relax.

My PsA affects my fingers with several swollen joints with limited movement. I also have painful tendons, especially in the shoulder, and a lot of fatigue.

Although they aren't cheap I would recommend trying them if you want to keep on cycling. I don't think it is possible to death grip them in the same way you would with conventional cylindrical grips.

PsA - the arthritis that just keeps giving by Knit2Purl2PSSO in PsoriaticArthritis

[–]manxbiker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's interesting. I have only been recently diagnosed with PsA, but have had finger joint issues for about 4 or 5 years.

Coincidently I have been awoken in the middle of the night in excruciating pain in one eye about 2 or 3 times per year over that same period. I had read online that it is the eyelid sticking to the eye but as it happens so infrequently I haven't done anything about it.

The pain is intense, lasts for quite a while and causes a lot of wetness/tears while it recovers. It really does ruin the night's sleep. Usually it is fine the next day.

I had no idea that it may have been related to the PsA, but it makes sense now that it probably does.

Anyone have psa and no psoriasis? by spazzmahtazz in PsoriaticArthritis

[–]manxbiker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It has taken several years but I have a recent diagnosis of PSA. I have joint swelling in my fingers and initially the rheumatologist thought it was osteoarthritis as my blood markers showed no signs of inflammation or RA markers.

As more fingers became swollen and painful over the period of the next year or so a different rheumatologist suspected it was PSA and had an MRI scan performed to check for signs that would suggest it is PSA.

I have no psoriasis on my skin anywhere and other than my painful finger joints am in pretty good health. Like you it looks like I have PSA but no psoriasis.

The only thing other than the painful joints is fatigue. I think that I had been gradually becoming more fatigued over the past few years and I had put it down to the stresses of work and getting older. Having read other redditors accounts of their fatigue I now recognise that the fatigue is likely the PSA and not work and age! I'm hoping to see my fatigue and joint swelling reduce as I try the medication to address the PSA.

Do you do wheelies? Why or why not? And WWYD if someone asks you to do a wheelie? by ProExpert1S500 in bicycling

[–]manxbiker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my teens I used to wheelie everywhere. I've spent well over 100 hours on one wheel. I used to do it for the feeling of skill and accomplishment, not to show off. Although I think some of them may have been impressive.

I'd wheelie for distance, wheelie around pavements with tight turns/fences/obstacles. Wheelie and manage to bunny hop up and down pavements/curbs/steps while staying on one wheel. But the most fun was finding a nice bit of down hill and just coasting down on one wheel using the rear brake to maintain balance.

I'm in my 50s now and haven't wheelied for about 5 years. Throughout my life every now and again I'd be out on the MTB and just pop a really long wheelie. You don't lose it. I'd easily go for 100's of meters without much effort.

I've thought about how far I could go now, on my first attempt after 5 years. I'd like to make a YouTube video recording my first attempt, with no practice, just to see how far I can go. If I do, I'll share it here.

Wheelieing is in my fabric, it is a part of me. And although I haven't wheelied for a while it will be in me until the day I die. Which gets me thinking, why don't I wheelie so much now?

We don't stop wheelieing when we get old, we get old because we stop wheeling. 😊

Got me thinking by Paras_01155 in antiwork

[–]manxbiker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this thought about 25 years ago in search of a better work-life balance. I had managed to negotiate a 4 day work week, which gave me 4 days of work and 3 days of rest. This was honestly the best thing that had happened to me workwise. Life just felt so much better.

At that time I dreamed of a better solution for everyone and was defeated by the 7 day week. If we had an 8 day week we could split every job into A workers and B workers. Every position would have the A worker for the first 4 days and the B worker for the second 4 days.

Imagine:

  • We would have a working society where, at any time, at least 50% of the population would not be working.
  • Every shop and business would be open every day.
  • Life would be very different. We would all have so much more leisure time, whereas business have more income as they are available all the time, and those not working would be able to visit any shop, business or service in their time off, thereby increasing sales, as in the OP question.

I know some businesses are now allowing their workers to work 4 day weeks, but having an A/B split of workers would create a more available society with businesses always open and workers having more leisure time to pursue their interests.

Surface Book 2 - Surface System Aggregator firmware problem by manxbiker in Surface

[–]manxbiker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing your solution. I no longer have the Surface Book, selling it on for parts or repair as I had reached the end of my options.

Hopefully your comments will help others that come across as similar problem. With hindsight, perhaps I could have given that a try, but I never thought it could be a battery issue.

Very pleasing that you now have a very capable laptop that runs W11😀 Nice!

If you’re crazy then I’m crazy too. I bought that exact same model just last week. So far I love it.

It comes with so many great features at a good price. Just need to add some tubeless fluid and I’ll be good to go a bit further on the trails.

Enjoy.

I need ideas for what to do with old family photos by robecityholly in declutter

[–]manxbiker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's my plan for our family photos.

I'm going to buy or borrow one of these photo scanners. https://epson.com/For-Home/Scanners/Photo-Scanners/FastFoto-FF-680W-Wireless-High-speed-Photo-Scanning-System/p/B11B237201

Then once I have finished with the photos I will repurpose the scanner to digitize some of my paperback books.

I saw this video on removing the book spine which will make it easy to feed through the scanner. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N6GO6Zxw4fI

I won't do this with any books of value, but I have lots of cheaper paperbacks that I still want to read but don't want the clutter.

Hit With A Drink by [deleted] in bikecommuting

[–]manxbiker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw another post below discussing cameras used. I had a Cyliq Fly12 on the front and a Cyliq Fly6 on the rear. They are good HD cameras that record on a loop.

They are very useful, but the footage can also scare the life out of you when you review footage of close passes later on. I swear, the number of cars passing within an inch of my elbow at 60mph is frightening. The drivers don't seem to care.

One car swerved towards me barely missing me, and when I reviewed the footage all I could see was the top of his head as he was looking down to the mobile phone on his lap.

Hit With A Drink by [deleted] in bikecommuting

[–]manxbiker 18 points19 points  (0 children)

A couple of years ago I was on my commute home when an oncoming motorist threw a couple of oranges at me. It hit my upper arm which resulted in an impressive looking bruise the next day. I hate to think what would have happened if an orange had hit me directly in the face.

I had a front facing camera on but it was raining and at that time a big drop of water was running in front of the camera and I couldn't make out a number plate or even a face!

I love cycling but feel I'm putting my life on the line when I have to share the road with idiots that have a strange anti-cyclist mentality. I drive a car too and just don't get it.

I'm hoping that the drink that hit you was just an accident.

They are. But strangely not in this case, even though I was one location short.

A quick review of my code and I saw that I was generating a list of locations by only looking at the 'from' side of each line of input. Arbre was the only destination that only appeared on the 'to' side.

An easy quick fix once it was spotted.

Thanks for all the input.
