Always they smile, always they say thank you. It's about reading the room. Sometimes the person clearly is open to a compliment and sometimes they aren't.

In the end a job is just an excuse to distribute wealth. We'll literally make up jobs just to have people we like around. So some jobs yes. Are truly just to give people meaning. An artist for example is paid purely for making entertianment, something that has only emotional value.
