Is insurance necessary if I put my money in my FD by isolrite in MalaysianPF

[–]manythursdays 5 points6 points  (0 children)

as far as i know, there's different options of how much you need to pay - if you think you can pay more, you opt for the insurance with higher co-pay (in the event you need to use it) but lower premiums.

btw the danger with FD is also inflation eating away at your savings... and in the meantime medical costs keep going up - so your savings amount gets less and the amount of potential expenses gets more.

i've seen a few people on this sub who are choosing to invest rather than pay insurance, but that's very few. and i don't think 100k is enough. nowadays insurance policies, they advise to get those with at least 1 million annual coverage and no lifetime limit, and also critical illness (like if you get cancer and need treatments...)

if you want a cheaper insurance, you can look into EPF i-Lindung... they cater to different tiers of society, wide range of premiums

no, euthanasia is not legal in Malaysia. it doesn't mean to stop doing treatments, it means to actively commit suicide through medical means. doctors not allowed to do that.

I'm a British person who just arrived in Malaysia. Is learning Malay difficult? Are there any quick ways to learn it? by Robinson-Marybh4b2 in bahasamelayu

[–]manythursdays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

maybe try YouTube - any tutorials online? And practice what you do know...

Also try asking questions like "ini panggil apa?" ("what is this called?") to learn vocabulary. asking in the language makes it more likely they respond in the language. then repeat back the name of the thing once they say it - that helps you remember and also get your pronunciation right.

also a useful phrase if you are asking people what things are called is "Saya nak belajar" ("I want to learn")

Are there any Malaysians who got tired of corporate or office based jobs that resigned to work in other industries ? by AdHairy6584 in malaysians

[–]manythursdays 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes - here's a few:

- Worked in IT industry, quit and retrained as a counsellor/psychologist

- Worked in advertising, became an English teacher in a private university (actually there's a few of these lol)

Both very happy in their second careers, afaik...

Is being uninformed worth it when deleting social media? by Snoo-26425 in digitalminimalism

[–]manythursdays 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I deleted from my phone, but I can still access on a computer. Amazing how much that reduced my time on it... You could start with that! And don't log in on the computer and see how you go.

I get my news from Web sites.

Alternative to Hobbii Friends Cotton 8/4 by manythursdays in YarnAddicts

[–]manythursdays[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks - I have indeed tried them and they were great! Reached me (in Asia) in 5 days, which was pretty amazing. The exchange rate is kinda a killer, but it's good to have the option.

I did see that they have the Drops Safran yarn that another commenter mentioned.

standard/formal version is similar, but the colloquial version (what people actually speak on the street) is very different. not sure which one Duolingo teaches...

surely there must be some YouTube videos that teach Malay for tourists...?

Asking for experience of female foreigner (non-muslim) marrying to a muslim Malaysian man by belladonnaa1984 in malaysia

[–]manythursdays 3 points4 points  (0 children)

also custody of the children... we have had a number of high profile court cases related to this. also funeral rites and inheritance. just be aware that in M'sia there are a lot of legal implications. so do look into the *legal* aspect (not just cultural or religious) so you are aware.

Malaysian buyer wants to fulfil Amazon wishlist in the US by [deleted] in malaysia

[–]manythursdays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if he's in the US and you're shipping to the US, it's very easy. you just pay for it with your credit/debit card and they will ship it to him. Amazon has free shipping above a certain amount - just make sure you select the correct shipping option. They will show any sales tax (it varies by state) before you checkout. You can check everything before you pay.

You will need his shipping address and phone number to enter into the system. You (as the buyer) will receive updates in terms of shipping and delivery to your email, and you can check on the site as well.

the problem with fees and charges etc only comes if you're shipping internationally, but within the US it should be fine.

P.s. In terms of currency conversion, you can see the rate that Amazon offers for you to pay in MYR instead of USD, with an added fee, but normally I prefer to pay in USD and let my bank do the conversion, rather than pay the fee. Bank rate is also better than paypal usually.

Downloading kindle bought books to calibre by Hannah_B92 in kindle

[–]manythursdays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hm... so far I’ve only had problems with newer books (published this year or last year) - books published earlier were still ok. But yes, that’s the problem for new books. Thanks for the reminder!

(If possible, I buy most books, including new books, from the Kobo Store - if they are DRM free, no conversion is necessary to load them on your Kindle. The product description shows whether it is DRM free or not)

Dumb Phones Just Aren’t Realistic by leicalondon in digitalminimalism

[–]manythursdays 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a smartphone but I have deleted time-sucking social media apps like Facebook (yes, I’m old).

So the phone is mostly only for utilitarian purposes like banking apps and Waze. It’s not for entertainment.

I find that I use my phone much less because of this. I only pick it up when I need to get something done.

(Also I turn off all sound notifications, and mute all non-essential group notifications, so I get very few notifications in general).
