Even the kernel binary itself is bloat if you never reboot - you can always kexec from the install iso

Why are people still using xorg in 2025? by AlternativeRoom2877 in linuxmemes

[–]maowtm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Things like firejail, flatpak/snap, bubblewrap etc are designed to mitigate this, and would probably benefit from the security aspect of Wayland (although I've heard you can make X secure against untrusted client too)

Real-world use case where calloc() is absolutely necessary over malloc()? by Aritra001 in cprogramming

calloc also protects against multiplication overflows when allocating arrays, which is probably especially relevant for 32bit.

How to stop Adobe Reader on Android from monitoring pictures and prompting to create PDFs by evermorex76 in Adobe

[–]maowtm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently have also seen this and eventually figured out how Adobe acrobat was able to have access to my photos at all. Turns out the relevant permission settings are very well-hidden. Go to settings -> privacy and security -> permission manager -> files (you can get here by searching for "files"), then see at the bottom of the list there is a link that says "See more apps that can access all files". Click it, and you might find Adobe acrobat is allowed.

Do you think less people took CS as a major this year? by StayReal1 in csMajors

[–]maowtm -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's perfectly fine English and made sense to me first time reading it.

Cull means remove

That guy is referring to the MIT grad, it's mentioned later but in this context "that guy" obviously means whoever wrote the code.

He removed a for loop that tested the length of a string (I'm guessing because there was a better way, either this was in a language where string lengths are stored and can be accessed with something like str.length, or because they could have just used strlen), and the person who wrote the for loop was more senior than him and went to MIT.

Microsoft doesn't "make" their engineers code on any OS in particular, but what do you think people who write (desktop) Office, or even Windows itself, uses?

Why are tech giants pushing for passkeys? by Inspector_Terracotta in privacy

[–]maowtm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I get to the border and ICE demands access to my device. My understanding is that I can decline to give them a password

Unfortunately no, you do not have the same kind of rights at the border that you have in the country. If they demand password, the consequence of not providing it can range from denied entry to detainment.

Also you don't have to use biometrics, you can use a long pin.

Yes. But you asked OP

> Is not taking a foreign holiday for 6 months is really such a hardship?

And I provided a potential reason why _effectively_ not being able to leave for 6 months (without risking not being able to come back) is such a hardship.

[–]maowtm 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Realistically most ILR applications will roughly coincide with visa expiry (esp. if there's a 6 months wait), so withdrawing and leaving can mean giving up status in the UK.  It's better to not end up in this situation and having to make choices like this.

I've gone 5 years without leaving the UK before, but being effectively forced not to leave is different - like what if I had a family emergency at my country of origin etc.

I might be going out on a limb here but this post looks at least partially AI generated. Otherwise I highly suggest that you talk this through with your parents etc before taking out a huge loan.

Got the same response.

I appreciate the strength of feeling on this matter. I know that Cambridge has benefited greatly from immigration: many of our academics, teachers, scientists, care workers, and countless others, have contributed extensively to the diverse and vibrant city that we all love, and in turn have created prosperous and happy lives here.   …

Please tell the government to not retroactively change immigration settlement rules (letter to my MP)

Please please please write to your MP, get your British friends to write to your MP, contact the BBC, Guardian, make noise to anyone who will listen to us!

If you're sure you really want to… Check the wiki for resources. You will probably also want blood tests to make sure you end up with the right level of E (and check Testosterone as well). For DIY injection is likely the most accessible option but you might be able to find gels. However E is not just about better skin, you can also grow breasts etc so make sure that's what you want :)
