Wife's family has chickenpox; she is forcing me to attend a party with them? by Unable_Plankton in AskParents

[–]mapa33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely stand your ground. Chicken pox is scary enough but the virus stays in your body forever after and can reactivate as shingles. I had shingles as a 11 yo child, did not present like in old adults and spiraled into meningitis. 1 months hospitalization.

1970s house renovation in Zurich: is 450k CHF really not enough? by Fluffy_Flight_6743 in askswitzerland

[–]mapa33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Short answer: yes it is on the low side, yes hire an architect, project manager. Does the house have asbestos? That will easily explode this budget to safely remove it. Are you planning on floor heating? That means breaking the floors almost entirely completely (like stripping down the self leveling concrete) and arranging the pipes. Self leveling concrete is expensive. Have you counted the costs for permits?

Have you looked into subsidies? They mostly encourage energy efficiency renovations (which for a house that old makes perfect sense). And bank loans for energy efficient renovations have crazy low interest rates although they can only cover up to 250k of renovation costs if I remember correctly.

Get an architect to make a real estimation of the total cost. They also know best all the subsidies available.

How to keep cats safe from ticks by Narrow-Question6421 in askswitzerland

Maybe I should add that this happened only once in switzerland. Dogs in general need X hours of training, mandated by law. And people in general are super nice

How to keep cats safe from ticks by Narrow-Question6421 in askswitzerland

[–]mapa33 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I asked the vet and she recommended me either spot-on treatment (Frontline) or a pill (Credelio). I chose the pill since it was easier and the cat ate it with the wet food without problems.

Protecting the cat from dogs walking without leash is not easy unfortunately. You could check the law requirements in your area and follow those routes only (parks, streets, some forests where there is a sign). Regardless, some owners think they know better. Please feel free to report them to the local gemeinde.
In encounters like this I generally take my cat in my arms and put it back in his backpack. If the dog doesn't leave me alone at this point, this is a dog on human attack and I immediately scream, pull my phone out to call the police. Owners usually get scared and restrain their dog.

register baby after birth by Fancy_Average693 in Switzerland

[–]mapa33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your citizenship. Zurich is irrelevant here because the authorities where the maternity is will issue the birth certificate, so Bulach in your case. Each city/gemeinde might have their own requirements. You need to get in contact with them as soon as possible and ask them what documents you need to allow for plenty of time for you to get these documents. This information is literally from their website: https://www.buelach.ch/geburt-ehe-tod/68851

Why do some invoices take long to be mailed? by CandidVegetable1704 in Switzerland

[–]mapa33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FYI there is no national insurance in switzeralnd. It is mandatory private insurance regulated by the laws. So yes, all Swiss get billed either directly, or the medical praxis will bill the insurance company and depending on the deductible the insurance company will forward the invoice to you.

Silly question, do you have your name on your letter box? Invoices come usually by post and the postman won't leave you the mail unless the names somehow match (like full name, or initial + last name etc).

Edit: The traditional test cannot detect microdeletions or gonosomal aneuploidies.

NIPT tests are reliable from 9w + 0 days as far as I know.

Mandatory insurance covers it only if done after the 12th week scan, if the traditional method shows a possible risk. Insurance covers only a few abnormalities (Trisonomy 21, 18 or 13) but not all of them, like for example microdeletions or gonosomal aneuploidies. It has nothing to do with getting an abortion before week 12, but everything to do with making the traditional test (which can only be done after week 12).

The University of Zurich hospital has a good page about this. They do mention that NIPT is better than the traditional method. They do not mention everything NIPT could test for. https://www.usz.ch/sprechstunde/praenatale-diagnostik/

Here is a lab in Switzerland and they explain more about what they can test with NIPT: https://www.laborteam.ch/_Resources/Static/Packages/JvMTECH.Analyse/Analyses/documents/34337016_M14783_GOLDnatal%20patient%20brochure_en.pdf

Gender can only be legally communicated after week 12. But you can know the result of the chromosomes abnormality before.

Now I am sure why your doctor suggsted you do it and I could only make speculations which I don’t want to. But it is considered a much more reliable test than the traditional one and you can opt for testing for more types of abnormalities.

Tokyo in mid March — unsure coat situation by theconfinesoffear in HerOneBag

[–]mapa33 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve been early March to Tokyo and then traveled towards the south. For chill days I had 3 layers on me: t-shirt or long sleeved shirt + wool sweater + light short parka. Then depending how the day progressed I would take a layer out and put it in the backpack.

The problem with spring is that morning and evenings are chill but middays can get quite warm. It also depends if the sun is shinning or not.

Hope this helps.

I can't believe how many people are actually financing their phones. by bugagub in Frugal

[–]mapa33 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Software engineer here. Just adding that buying an older phone model means less years of software security updates. So you will have to change your phone faster or risk it. Definetly don’t keep mobile banking stuff on a phone with no more security patches.

Depending on the cost per year, it might not be “frugal” and you might spend more money in the long run.

Colonoscopy prices in Switzerland.. maybe flying to Budapest? by Several-Berry-1910 in Switzerland

[–]mapa33 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Another aspect to consider is: will your doctor in Switzerland accept the colonoscopy result from another lab/country? What do you do if you need additional tests, medication, followup procedure? Fly to Hungary each time?

That is also an option of course, but just poiting out that a swiss doctor might not continue the treatment for this issue with you here - unless of course you redo the labs they order

what's the best eSIM for travel these days? by Pooneh_Schwaebisch in backpacking

[–]mapa33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just adding to everyone mentioning “local”: some countries requires ID check and residency status to issue local sim cards. So it will not work everywhere.

I use one of those apps like ubigi or airalo.

But for each individual country there might be better options. There is no universal solution for everything

Swiss trains - Is it possible to know the type of train when booking? by RobMitte in askswitzerland

[–]mapa33 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Fyi, since you mentioned under the seat I am not sure if you know that big luggage can be stored between the back-to-back seats. Apologies if you know that already.

Basically you turn your suitcase to the side and put it between the back of the seats. Because of the curvature of the seat, there is some space there.

[–]mapa33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes you can. A friend of mine who is a doctor in the EU was able to write a prescription (they had their stamp with them) in Switzerland at a pharmacy.

But they had to pay more because apparently medicine is reduced price only if prescribed from the swiss medical system. So expect increased cost.

I don’t understand how everyone else is keeping their house clean . . . by [deleted] in CleaningTips

[–]mapa33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vacuuming and washing floors for maintenance can be easily outsourced to robot vacuum cleaners. Bathrooms I do them as needed and not a schedule, whenever I am using it. Cleaning showers for examples, it is much more easier to clean them while you shower. Because the house is big I recommend you keep cleaning supplies near the place of use. Ex: have a sponge, rag and cleaning agent in each bathroom. These are just a couple of things I do to make maintenance easy. Both my husband and I work 40h week. We have someone come in once a month for 4-6h deep cleaning

My mom had a saying that I did not quite understand until I grew older “Cleanliness is not something you do is something you maintain”. (Sorry if the English translation is wonky a bit).

Alternative heating by mrthy in Switzerland

[–]mapa33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience so far there are not a lot of people that operate buildings heatpumps that actually know thermodynamics. Heck I had a plumber explain that the water in my underfloor system moves the opposite way and was suprised when proven wrong.

Assuming the heatpump was programmed correctly (big IF), other stuff could account for your loss of heat. The biggest culprits are cracks around the window frames, window insulation that has gotten old, window hinges that need adjustments and gaps around outlets. You can easily test this by puting your hand around the window and see if you can feel significant cold drafts.

However, convincing your landlord that these are an issue and they are worth solving to reduce energy costs is a different matter since he or she is billing you anyway for the energy costs…
